It was almost noon by the time Wash got off the bus. He was still several blocks from his apartment and his stomach had been nagging at him to eat something since he’d gotten on his first bus back in Los Angeles. Now, after a couple of bus transfers, the nagging was getting especially hard to ignore. Served him right for skipping breakfast.
Not that breakfast at the VA hospital in LA had been all that appealing when it had been offered to him. After two straight days of tests to make sure his head wasn’t going to implode or that he wasn’t going to die in his sleep, or whatever else they wanted to check for, the last thing Wash wanted to do was stay any longer than he had to. The commute back to Orange County had been daunting enough and Wash simply wanted to get it over with.
Eventually he was going to have to buy a car. He should probably find a job first, though.
However, the first and foremost thing on his mind was lunch. He could try heading back to his apartment and eat whatever was in his fridge. Was there anything in his fridge? He usually made a point not to leave anything that could potentially go off whenever he had to make these trips to LA to get his head looked at. The last thing he remembered being in there was take-out from some Chinese place, although he wasn’t sure he hadn’t eaten it or thrown it out before leaving.
Wash decided he best err on the side of caution and pick something up to eat. A burger maybe. Something he could eat along the way. There was a burger place around here somewhere.
He started down the sidewalk in the direction he believed the burger place to be. As he walked, Wash couldn’t help the feeling that something wasn’t quite right. Looking around, everything seemed okay. People on the sidewalk with him looked perfectly normal. A few of them were walking rather fast, but nothing out of the ordinary, really. Seal Beach was a military town, after all, people here seemed to go about their lives with a little more sense of urgency than the rest of Orange County. At least that’s what it had seemed to Wash when he first moved here less than a month ago. It was one of the reasons he had decided to stay in Seal Beach rather than in any of the other surrounding towns. Closer to home in a manner of speaking.
The weather was nice as it always was. No threatening storms coming in from the coast that might alter the feel of the air around him. The sun was shining brightly. The temperature was steadily rising to a point where he would have to eventually shed his grey sweatshirt. A few stray puffy white clouds hung in the sky, but that was it. Just another perfect day in Sunny California.
So why did it feel as though something was…off? No, not “off”, Wash realized as the burger place came into view up the street. More like he’d missed something.
Something important.
