It was a fear that Luthien hadn’t known that she had until she had become aware of the possibility. The power outages, and then the mentions of a spider. A very large spider that devoured everything in her path.
That spider would want the Silmaril. And if she got ahold of it no force on earth would be able to stop her. So Luthien knew she would need to keep Ungoliant away from the gem - and yet, she would need the gem to lure the monster away from people.
It would probably kill her, but Luthien opted to not share that fact with others.
She didn’t have anything particularly warrior like to wear, so she chose a simple blue sundress and boots that didn’t match but would suffice for a mad ride on a motorcycle through the city. She strapped her sword to her hip, and went in search of Elphaba.
Elphaba was at Gray’s books with Dior looking for new books to read to him when the power cut out. Tessa had quickly calmed everyone down and after a few seconds some emergency lighting had kicked in so people could see each other and their way to the exit. Hitching Dior up on her hip, she followed Tessa outside and onto the street where she could see that the power was out up and down the street. Frowning, she reached into her shoulder bag and fished out her phone to check for signal. It looked like the cell towers were out in the area too. No way to get a message to Luthien that she was ok, hopefully she would know they were ok.
Elphie wasn’t answering. Luthien palmed the Silmaril, then stepped out side and straddled her motorcycle. She hadn’t actually shown it to her wife yet, but it was better to ask forgiveness than permission, right? Remembering where her family had gone for the day, she sped off to the book store.
Elphaba hugged Dior and pressed a kiss to his forehead, rocking him from side to side as people tried to figure out what was happening. She tried her best to keep people calm, helping Tessa talk to her customers and keeping their minds off the worst case scenario. She was in the middle of reassuring an elderly lady who they had sat in a chair from the shop when she heard the deep rumble of a motorbike engine. As it got closer, much closer, she frowned in the direction of the noise. The last thing they needed was someone coming along trying to take advantage of the situation. She handed Dior to Tessa, stroking his hair and pressing a kiss to his forehead once he was in the other woman’s arms and moved to head off the bike.
Ready for confrontation, she was stunned to see her wife straddling the back to the machine, a sword strapped to her side. “Wha…?” she shook her head, questions written all over her face. It was ridiculously hot and Elphaba had to remind herself that now was neither the time nor the place to think about making love to her on the back of that bike. A slight shake of her head and a swallow, and she was back on task. “What’s going on? What’s with the bike? And the sword?”
“Something from my dreams. A creature of pure evil and malice and she wants my Silmaril. You and Dior need to get to safety,” Luthien explained. For a moment, she looked like some elven goddess of old, eyes flashing with determination. “What I am about to face is not something for a child.” She thought that Elphaba’s magic might come in handy, if Elphie pressed.
She also thought that she would prefer her wife protect their son. If Luthien did not come back alive, Elphaba was all that Dior would have.
“You’re going to face it?” Elphaba asked incredulously, figuring out what her wife was going to do. She looked back over her shoulder at Dior, a little desperately. She wanted to protect him, but she knew she could help Lúthien too. “I can help,” she turned back to Luthien.
“Who will protect Dior?” Luthien asked, her eyes moving to her son. “And I won’t be able to protect you.”
Elphaba’s jaw clenched. Who said she needed protecting? She looked back at Dior in Tessa’s arms, he was content enough now as the shopkeeper entertained him, but what would happen to him if both of them died? She dropped her chin in resignation. “I can’t stop you can I?” she asked, looking up at her wife.
Luthien shook her head, and rested her hand on the sword at her side. She was torn between a desire to see Elphaba safe, and a desire to have her there besides her. “If you wish to follow me, I will not stop you. This is a thing that guns will not kill; but we must lure her from the city.”
“I have to make sure Dior is safe,” Elphaba told her, stepping up to Luthien astride the bike. “I love you, look after yourself,” she told her, sliding a hand behind her head and pressing a fierce kiss to her lips.
Luthien tangled her fingers in Elphaba’s hair, returning the kiss with fervor. “I love you, and I shall. If you seek me out, the glow of the Silmaril should not be hard to find.” She smiled, wryly. “Although the spider would be easier to track.”
“Not surprising given that it’s a giant spider,” Elphaba quipped, still a little breathless from the kiss. “It’s still unusual even for the OC,” she smiled, worried for her wife’s safety. “You know how to kill it though, right?”
“No,” Luthien said, the truth in her eyes. “I will not be able to kill her, even with the help of all the heroes in the county. But I know her, and I know what was said of her. She will devour herself if she can be made immobile.”
“Eat herself? That sounds...awful,” Elphaba winced. “Better than eating us though,” she reconciled. “I’ll see to Dior, you see to the spider. If I can join you I will,” she told her with a determined look on her face, then pressed another deep kiss to her mouth.
“I love you.” Luthien whispered again. She kissed Elphaba, then ran to give Dior a smooch. She told him to take care of Elphaba while she went to do something. She spared her wife one last glance before she disappeared out the door.
