It had been a while since Rose had stopped by Baxter’s Bakery, but there was just something about the idea of a sparkling latte and something delicious involving chocolate that was calling her name. It had been an easy decision to stop by before she went to the gym because she really didn’t want to stop in there completely covered in sweat and stinking like a pig. Her mind was wandering as she made her way down the street and she couldn’t quite decide what she wanted to get once she got in there. Unfortunately the moment she turned the corner to head into the building she failed to see the other person who was was right there. Contact was made and Rose stumbled backwards before collecting herself and reaching out to try and steady the other person, “Oh god, I’m so sorry! Are you okay?”
Rose had just been leaving from her shift, checking her phone, when she collided with someone. She was lucky that whoever she had crashed into had faster reflexes than she did, because she was pretty sure that if she had fallen over, that would have been quite embarrassing indeed. “Oh no, it should be me apologizing,” Rose said. “I guess this is the reason why most people don’t try to walk and text. I’m fine. Are you okay?”
“At least you didn’t fall into a manhole or something. But we’re both totally to blame. You on your phone and my head in the clouds thinking about chocolate,” Rose admitted with a laugh as she dusted herself off and grinned at the other girl. At least she didn’t seem like the type to randomly start screaming at her over nothing, so this was a definite win so far. But she had to shake her head at the question, “You don’t have to worry about me. Takes a lot more than than that to hurt me, so I’m just fine. I’ve gotta watch myself when my head’s in the clouds apparently.”
While Rose’s mother would have certainly started screaming, that was a trait that Rose luckily did not share. “I’m glad to hear that,” she said. “There are certainly worse things that you could be thinking of. But I feel awful, please, let me buy you a drink or a snack.”
“Aw, that’s sweet of you. Thanks. I was just going into Baxter’s, so that’s perfect timing,” Rose was surprised that the woman wanted to buy her something to make up for such a simple thing. That was certainly a comment on the state of the world when you were surprised by someone’s kindness. But, Rose wasn’t going to turn down the offer and she gestured towards the sidewalk, “After you since we’re only a couple feet from the door.”
“It’s not as sweet as you might think,” Rose said, smiling and heading back inside the building. “I work here, so it’s not too much trouble at all.”
“Ha! Giving me a discount on my stuff, well I can’t hate on that,” Rose admitted with a good natured laugh as they went into the building. She still wasn’t completely sure what to get so she pursed her lips together in thought as they approached the counter, “What should I get for a snack? What do you recommend?”
“My personal favourite are the fruit tarts,” Rose said, “But you had mentioned chocolate, hadn’t you? The triple chocolate brownies are also very good.” Rose was eating far too much pastries while she was working at Baxters, and was surprised that she hadn’t already managed to gain twenty pounds.
“The fruit tarts sound good and I only mention chocolate because I have an unhealthy obsession with it. My boyfriend and I met because he told me about a brownie they had here and offered to buy one for me,” Rose’s love could be bought for dessert quite easily. Thankfully Tom had turned into something more and she wasn’t inclined to run off on him for someone else buying dessert, “But those brownies sound ah-mazing.”
“What a sweet story,” Rose said. “Pun not intended. I can understand how Izzy’s baking could play Cupid.”
“Haha, I’m just a sucker for dessert. He knew exactly how to play me,” Rose replied with a laugh as she joined the line that was at the counter. Yeah, she was going to need a brownie and maybe a tart for later.
Rose couldn't help but laugh. "It is nice when you find someone who knows exactly what makes you tick," she said. Her thoughts drifted to Jack for just a moment - they had only just gotten to know one another, but he did seem to have a habit of always saying the right thing. When she got up to the cashier, she ordered one of the brownies for the other Rose, and since she was there anyway ordered herself a sparkling latte, because she really could not get enough of them.
"It really is. So far so good with him. I usually drive them away, some men can't handle a girl that's a fighter like me," Rose hated that some men acted like that. It was hard to find a guy that didn't mind a woman who could kick their ass potentially and did it for a profession. She thanked Rose for the brownie as she reached forward to grab the plate from the cashier.
