Sarah entered the living room after putting Kira to bed, she flopped on the sofa letting her head rest on her brother’s legs. “Today was a long day” she said, she’d posted on the net earlier that week about how Kira’s class were creating Fathers Day cards and Kira was one of the only ones who didn’t have a dad to give it to. She’d been feeling bad about it but trying not to dwell on something she couldn’t change.
“I feel exhausted this week” she said as she looked up at Felix, “How are you doing Fe?”
As Sarah laid down, her head on his leg, Felix began playing with her hair, eyes still on the tv that he’d been watching, “I’m alright. Got contacted by one of my regulars to plan her daughter’s Sweet Sixteen, so that’s going to be interesting. I’m meeting with them tomorrow.” When Felix had first moved to America, he had struggled for a little while, making a name for himself in the party planning business, but once he’d made his mark, he’d become one of the top party planners in the area, which at times he still couldn’t quite believe. “Aside from what I already know, how’re you?”
“Yeah, that’s pretty cool. I still think it’s perfect that you plan parties you know. I knew you’d be popular” she told him, he had an eye for knowing what would work to make a party really take off. “I’m okay. Dodging daddy questions from Kira” she sighed, “We should focus on our home search” she said, “Focus on good things”
Sarah may have been proud of him, but Felix was proud of the both of them. They both could have ended up in not so great places, but they had both turned their lives around when they needed to the most and had stayed on the right path. Sure, Felix still did drugs every now and then, but it was nothing like what he’d been doing when Sarah had run off years back. “Well, I like to be in charge, so it only make sense.” He gave Sarah a cheeky grin then stroked her hair, “And as for Kira, we both know what she’s going through. I mean, I don’t really remember my biological parents much, but Mother’s Day and Father’s Day do make me wonder how things could have been different. Father’s Day more so, because for Mother’s Day we had Mrs. S.”
Sarah was ridiculously proud of Felix, and grateful that her brother had forgiven her for running off and then returning with Kira. She knew that had been hard on him and she still felt guilty for it. “Well that’s true” she agreed grinning back, “Yeah I know. I wish I could tell her something but...I can’t go back to that. It’s not a fairytale and there won’t be a happy ending. Not in that sense”
“The time might not be right now, but eventually….” Felix knew the details that Sarah had yet to tell Kira and he understood why she hadn’t told her. She was only a little girl and likely wouldn’t understand it right now, but Felix thought that when Kira was older she would deserve to know. At the same time though, it was completely up to Sarah if she ever told Kira and Felix didn’t want to push her to do that. She wasn’t the only one with things she didn’t want to talk about.
“Yeah maybe eventually” Sarah said, she’d confided in Felix eventually too but it had taken a while. She’d been almost ashamed for being so stupid but she’d gotten Kira so the experience wasn’t all terrible. “Anyway, focusing on better things” she said with a smile up at him.
“Yes, better things.” Knowing that Sarah didn’t want to keep talking about this subject, Felix decided to go with the change of subject, “So, I found another apartment that we can look at tomorrow, if you’re free.” They had been trying to find an apartment for awhile now and so far nothing that had worked out so Felix was hoping that this once would.
“Really? That would be great. I’ve got a couple of appointments in the afternoon but I’m free all morning. Is that going to work?” she asked, hopeful that this one would be the one they’d been waiting for.
Felix reached for his phone on the table, brought up the calendar then nodded, “Yeah, the morning should work if the landlord is around. I’ll call first thing and hopefully we can check it out.” Felix was looking forward to moving into a bigger place. He had thought about doing it a few times before Sarah had moved in, but the apartment had been fine for just him so he had never actually made the move, but now it was necessary.
“Great” Sarah said, “You sure you don’t mind moving? I know we kind of plonked ourselves in your lap without warning” she said and she did feel a little guilty about that. As much as he’d been pleased to see her and she knew if the situation was reversed she would be happy to have him too she still felt bad.
“Of course I don’t mind. Someone has to keep an eye on you and the monkey and who better than me?” After all, real life didn’t appear as though it would be quite as exasperating as the dreams with all the clones and cops and things. Sure, there was Cosima and strange things seemed to happen where they lived, but it was not as inconvenient as the dreams, “Just don’t get mixed up with any cops or anything else shady and we’ll be fine.”
“Nobody better for the job” Sarah confirmed, “And don’t worry, if the dreams have taught me anything it’s not to impersonate a cop. Besides that’d put the job in jeopardy and I’m enjoying it a lot” she grinned at him.
“Good. We don’t need the crazy shite that happens in the dreams happening in real life.” Felix set his phone down, “Cosima is the exception to that rule. And maybe Soccer mum clone. I’m drawing the line at the crazy Ukranian though.” Felix really hoped that no more clones showed up in the dreams. Three clones of Sarah were more than enough.
“I agree. Cosima is awesome and yeah okay I wouldn’t mind Alison showing up but I also draw the line at the crazy. In fact any other crazy or any other clone. Those two would be enough” Sarah liked Cosima, she was smart and fun and wanted to get to know Sarah too which was nice. “Any more and we’re just getting into the realm of really fucking creepy”
Felix nodded, “And we don’t need any more creepy. Things are already mad enough with the things that happen here.” Felix was still trying to wrap his head around some of the things he’d seen over the last couple of months.
“That is so true” Sarah agreed, “This place is pretty crazy even without the dreams” Because she’d seen things she never would have believed before coming to this town.
Felix started braiding random sections of Sarah’s hair, “For now we should just focus on the very normal task of finding a bigger flat. As long as we’re doing that we can pretend everything else is completely normal. No crazy clones and no vampires and demons.”
“That sounds like a plan” Sarah agreed, closing her eyes as Felix braided her hair. It reminded her of when they were growing up, the only fond memories of childhood she had were with Fe. “Much better than trying to work out just how and why crap like that is happening”
Felix nodded even though Sarah couldn’t see him, “Then it’s settled. We’ll ignore all the crazy shite and focus on ourselves.” Even as he said it, he wondered just how long they were going to be able to do that, but it sounded like a good plan to him.
