Magnus had spent the day with Alec and instead of going home when Alec had had to head back to the Institute to get ready for work, Magnus had gone with him, figuring he’d go home afterwards. It had been awhile since Magnus had seen Isabelle of Jace, so he had decided that he could spend a little time catching up if either of them were home after Alec left for work. After deciding that Alec would come by his place when he got off work, they said goodbye and as Alec left the Institute, Magnus began wandering its halls.
Even now, it seemed so strange at times to be there. He’d been there so many times in his dreams, first before the Lightwoods ever lived there, when he brought Church and then when he worked with the Shadowhunters and finally when he’d been called upon to heal Alec after he’d been injured and almost died.
As he’d wandered, he’d happened on the library then the training room and finding neither of the other Shadowhunters there, he decided to try the kitchen.
Izzy was dancing around the kitchen singing along to the radio as she whipped up cookie batter, she was trying out new recipes for the bakery and in a pretty good mood too. She’d received a necklace from the dreams too which she was currently wearing. It was nice and was a family heirloom which sensed demons.
Seeing Magnus enter the kitchen she smiled, “Hey, Alec gone to work?”
Opening the door to the kitchen, Magnus had stopped when he saw Izzy dancing around and couldn’t help but smirk a little as he watched her until she finally saw him at which point, he entered the kitchen fully, “He did. Unfortunately.” He moved towards the center island where Izzy had quite a few things laid out, “What’re you making?”
Izzy didn’t mind being caught, even if she had been dancing like an idiot. “Aww so you’re all lonely now” she teased him lightly, before answering his question “Cookies first and then cupcakes. Stick around for a while and you can try them if you like” she offered.
“I don’t have a shoot coming up, so I think I can afford to eat a few cookies.” Leaning against the counter, Magnus watched as Izzy mixed up the cookie dough, his yellow eyes scanning the visible Runes upon her skin until they fell upon the necklace around her neck. The necklace she wore in the dreams. The necklace he had given Camille. The necklace that once again linked one of them to both the past and present without them knowing it.
“You better do. I’d be insulted if you didn’t eat my cooking, you know since I actually can cook here” she grinned, as she continued pottering around the kitchen. “So when are you next whisking Alec away?” she asked, not realising he’d recognised or even noticed her new necklace.
Magnus had been so distracted by the necklace that he almost didn’t hear her question, “I don’t know. Soon, hopefully. Our anniversary is coming up, so I think I might wait until then.” It was much easier to go away now that he could simply open a portal, but if they went on trips all the time then the novelty would wear off, “I see you have a new piece of jewelry.” He said, indicating her necklace.
“Oh you’ll have to tell me if you need any help planning anything” she said with a smile, happy for her brother and Magnus. “Yes, it came from the dreams” she said her hand moving up to touch it, “Do you like it?”
Magnus nodded, “I will definitely let you know if I need any help.” Magnus liked that Izzy was so gung ho about their relationship and always wanted to help Magnus with recipes to make for Alec and help setting things up to surprise him. At the mention of the necklace and it’s origin, Magnus nodded again, “I was beginning to wonder if you’d gotten it yet.” He wondered if he should tell her the actual origin of it like he’d told Alec why he and Will had a resemblance.
Izzy supported her brother and Magnus more than anybody else, she believed in them and could see clearly how happy they made each other. It was lovely to see and Izzy lived a little vicariously through them. “You know it then? From your dreams?” she asked him when he spoke.
Magnus nodded again, carefully deciding his next words, “I knew about it before you were born actually.” He wasn’t going to come right out and say how he knew about it unless she specifically asked. She didn’t know where the necklace had originally come from in the dreams, so there was no way for her to find out unless he told her.
“Before I was born? Then who did it belong to? I thought it was a family heirloom, do you know where it came from?” she asked him curiously stopping what she was doing for a moment.
“Well, it was, but before that, it came from me.” Magnus couldn’t help the smirk that lifted his lips as he said it. Now that Izzy had asked Magnus didn’t see any reason not to tell her the story behind the necklace.
Izzy’s jaw may have dropped a little at that revelation, “You?” she said, “Okay, these cookies are going in the oven and then you are telling me everything”
Magnus laughed and nodded, “Alright. Fair enough.” He picked up a spoon and stole a bit of cookie dough from a nearby bowl and began picking at it while he waited for Izzy to finish putting the cookies in the oven.
Izzy made quick work of the cookies and they were soon in the oven, coming to sit on one of the kitchen stools she looked at Magnus, “So come on, tell me the story”
“Well, it all started in 1857 when I gave that necklace to Camille Belcourt.” Magnus said, watching Izzy for her reaction as he spoke, “The inscription on the back, Amor verus numquam moritur, means True love cannot die.” Only so many people would know about the inscription on the back. “I enchanted it so that it would allow the wearer to know when demons are near.”
“Camille Belcourt...” Izzy frowned why was that name familiar, “Oh wait, the vampire? You and her!?” Her hand raised to her neck and she fiddled with it, not entirely sure how she felt about it now. It was handy sure but the story wasn’t quite what she’d been hoping for.
Magnus nodded, “I’d fallen in love with her, but someone else also had feelings for her and I knew that since I was immortal, I would have time later. So I stepped aside, but I gave her that necklace as a reminder.” Magnus continued watching Izzy’s reactions as he spoke, “It wasn’t until sometime later that we got together. Although, my feelings for her were stronger than hers for me.”
“How long were you in love with her?” she asked quietly, she’d never seen people as in love as her brother and Magnus and she had to admit that she hadn’t quite expected this. “It shouldn’t surprise me, I know, I mean you’d lived a long life before you met Alec”
“A long time.” It was easier than trying to figure out exactly how long it had been. “Breaking up with her was one reason I eventually moved to America. I needed a change and after everything with the London Shadowhunters, it was time.” He didn’t blame her for worrying about his feelings for Alec after hearing about Camille, “There were a lot of people before Alexander, but once I met him, I assure you, there was no one but him.”
Izzy nodded, “I know” she smiled, “I know how much you love him. It’s just strange I guess. Hearing about others from so long ago. Have you and Alec discussed her?” she asked curiously.
Magnus nodded, “We have. More so in real life then in the dream world. She’ll make an appearance in your dreams.” He wondered where Izzy was in the dreams, but it appeared that she was behind him and they had yet to interrogate Camille so she must have been somewhere around the battle in Idris. At least he assumed so. “She likes to try and make trouble for other people and she tried to prey on Alec’s feelings for me.”
Alec and Magnus were currently on holiday in her dreams so little did she know that things with them were about to kick off. “Okay well that’s good because Alec would probably take it hard if you hadn’t” as he had in the dreams by the sound of it. “At least now I know to expect her right?”
“Exactly.” Alec in real life might after understood about Camille when they had talked about her, but in the dreams it made sense that Camille was the reason Alec had begun to act so strange and since Magnus had a tendency to not talk about his past in the dreams, he didn’t see them talking about her like they had in real life, “Now, are you curious about how the necklace got from Camille to the Lightwood family?” Magnus quirked a brow at Izzy, waiting for her response.
“Of course I am” Izzy grinned, “I want to hear everything about it” she added eagerly. Because she had a feeling it would be an interesting story. Those involving Magnus usually were.
Magnus smirked and sat up a little straighter in his chair, “Well, when Camille and I broke up in 1878, she gave it back to me. I then gave it to Will Herondale shortly after to help with what was going on at the time.” Magnus didn’t think that Izzy knew anything about Mortmain and his automatons unless she’d spent time with Tessa or Jem, because he knew that Will likely wouldn’t have talked about his dreams to just anyone. “He then gave the necklace to his sister Cecily and Cecily eventually married Gabriel Lightwood.”
“So Tessa’s Will is my ancestor?” in the dreams anyway because here they were around the same age. “That’s pretty cool. So does that mean you don’t want it back then? Because honestly I don’t think Alec would wear it” she teased lightly before the oven pinged telling her to check on it.
Magnus nodded, “I don’t know if you’ve noticed or not, but Alexander and William have a bit of a resemblance. That’s the reason.” Magnus still thought it was extremely interesting how Will, Alec and Izzy could all co-exist someplace when they were technically related. “And no, I don’t want it back. It’s yours now. I’m just glad that it went to a good family.”
Izzy nodded, “They have the dark haired blue eyed thing going on” she agreed as she moved to the oven, “Huh. It’s so weird” she said because it really was. “Thank you. I’m glad it did too. Now how about fresh warm cookies?” she asked him with a grin.
