Clary was doing some painting in the park. The weather had been great when she’d woken up, so she had decided to take her art supplies out to the park and get some practice in. She’d texted Magnus to see if he was free and he’d said he would see what he could do. It had been a while since they had met up and a lot had changed for her.
Here, sitting in the shade of a large tree, she had her sketchpad and supplies laid out on the bench as she sketched the scene before her. The lake was still, with ducks bobbing along its surface and people walked or cycled past as she worked.
While Magnus spent a good amount of time at The Institute, Clary wasn't there as often as him so he didn't get to see her like he saw Jace and Izzy and of course Alec, so when the redhead called him to get together, after making sure he was free, he agreed.
On the the way to the park, he had decided to stop by Baxter's and grab a box of cookies to bring with him. Reaching the park, he headed towards the lake where Clary had said she would be, smiling when he saw the girl sitting there, "Hello, Clary."
Turning, Clary grinned happily at the sight of Magnus. “Hey, come and take a seat,” she patted the bench beside her and shuffled up a little bit. “You alright?” she asked, trying to judge his demeanour. He was always one of the more difficult in their group to read.
Returning the smile, Magnus took the seat beside Clary, setting the box of cookies down on his other side, “I’m good. How are you?” Magnus always enjoyed getting together with Clary and now was no exception, “What are you working on?” He asked, gesturing towards her sketchpad.
“I’m ok thanks, just getting some me time,” Clary told him. It had been a while since she’d gone out into the world just to paint or draw which she’d decided to do with her day off. “I’m just trying out some landscape work. We’ve got a project coming up and it’s probably my weakest subject matter,” she shrugged, she wasn’t awful at landscapes but she didn’t enjoy them as much as painting or drawing people. Jace in particular, but she loved looking at him anyway. She’d have to see if Magnus would pose for her again, he was very drawable.
Magnus glanced out towards the lake, yellow, slitted eyes taking in the landscape before he turned them on Clary, “Landscapes are kind of boring actually. Aren’t there enough paintings of them out there? They should give you tougher things to draw.” If she asked, Magnus would pose for her again in a heartbeat.
“I know, they really are,” Clary sighed dramatically as she looked at the drawing in front of her. “It’s a hoop I have to jump through unfortunately,” she told him with a little shrug. “Tougher things? Ok, challenge accepted, what do you think I should draw?” she asked with a grin.
Magnus leaned back on the bench, both arms stretched out across the top as he thought, “You could always draw the Institute. I’m sure that would be a challenge.” The Shadowhunter’s Institute was extremely intricate; inside and out.
“Huh, I hadn’t thought about that,” Clary considered the idea for a second. “Alright, challenge accepted,” she told him brightly. “So, how are things with you? Alec ok?”
“Good. I’m looking forward to seeing it.” Magnus reached over and picked up the box of cookies, “I’m doing well. Alec as well. He….have you heard of a man named Dorian Pavus? He’s a model, like me.” Of course Dorian was just a little more well known than Magnus was not that he minded in the least. Magnus hadn’t intended to tell anyone how Alec had gotten jealous when he and Dorian had been talking on the net, but he didn’t think Clary would tell Alec.
“Dorian Pavus?” Clary repeated slowly with a frown. “No, don’t think I know him, why? Should I? Is he your nemesis?” she teased, bumping him gently with her shoulder.
Magnus laughed and shook his head, “No, he’s not my nemesis. He’s an old friend. We had a thing awhile back and he just joined Valarnet and Alec got a little jealous.” Magnus explained, taking a cookie out of the box and taking a bite, “He has nothing to be jealous about of course; Dorian and I are only friends now. I only wish Alec didn’t get so worried when he didn’t need to be.”
“How long is a while back?” Clary asked, helping herself to a cookie from the box after Magnus. “Have Dorian and Alec met?”
“Before I moved out here. So, over two years ago.” Magnus said, trying to recall exactly when it was that he’d been involved with Dorian. “He was helping me with my career and we started a little friends with benefits thing. It was never like what I have with Alec.” He’d admired Dorian, sure, but he’d never been in love with him.
“And I take it Alec knows all this and is still weirded out by it?” Clary asked, putting down her cookie so she could turn over a page of her sketchbook and start sketching Magnus as he spoke.
Magnus nodded, taking a bite of his cookie, “I’ve reassured him that he has nothing to worry about and I can see why he’d be worried, but I love Alec. I was never in love with Dorian.” Magnus had been trying to come up with various ways he could show Alec that he was the only one that he wanted and past relationships meant nothing to him.
Clary winced as he talked. “I’m sorry, Magnus,” she sighed. “I hate to say it, you know I like Alec, but at the end of the day he’s got to trust you and that’s on him. You’re faithful and devoted to him, anyone can see that. He needs to learn that he can trust you with his heart,” she told him with a sad expression.
“This is his first relationship and because of the dreams, he’s worried we’ll break up.” Magnus hadn’t gotten there yet, but what he had been dreaming recently was potentially what would cause it and if it was then he didn’t blame Alec for worrying, but Magnus was a lot more open about things in real life than in the dreams, so he didn’t see life imitating art, “I’m sure he’ll be fine.” Magnus was silent for only a moment before changing the subject, “And how are things with you and Mr. W….the other Mr. Lightwood?” In his dreams, Jace had already found out he was a Wayland, but he didn’t know where Clary was and hoped she didn’t realize his flub.
“Surely he understands that if he treats you with mistrust then he’s more likely to push you away?” Clary asked, wishing she could do more to counsel her friend who was so obviously worried about his lover.
“You mean Jace?” she asked, a blush colouring her cheeks as she ducked her chin. “Things are really good, thanks,” she grinned happily.
“Except that I’m not going anywhere. The only way to help him get over his insecurities is to show him that he has nothing to worry about.” And for that, Magnus stuck to Alec, giving him space when he needed it, but using his best judgement when he felt like he needed to give Alec the attention that he craved from the Warlock.
He nodded, smirking a little, “Unless you and Alec have started having an affair without me knowing, which I would be extremely surprised about.” He teased Clary, taking another cookie from the box as he glanced at her sketch pad, realizing that she was drawing him, “That’s fantastic. Of course it doesn’t help that your muse is extremely easy on the eyes.”
“Oh yes Magnus, Alec has had a change of heart regarding me and we have been having a torrid love affair,” Clary laughed, before looking down at her sketch pad. She felt herself blush bright red as he spoke about Jace being attractive. He really was...all over, she thought, biting her lip. “Aren’t we glad that male Shadowhunters are ridiculously attractive,” she winked at him and reached for a cookie.
Magnus laughed then gestured towards the sketchpad, “I was referring to the sketch there of me, but I suppose Jace is reasonable attractive too.” He smirked and took a bite of the cookie he had been holding. In the dreams practically everyone was in love with Jace, but Magnus just didn’t see it. He could admit that Jace was attractive, but as far as he was concerned, Alec was the breaktaking one of the two.
Clary laughed in response. “Sorry, I get a little...blinkered when it comes to Jace,” she blushed, brushing her hand over the page out of habit. “Thanks, you just inspired me when you were talking about Alec,” she smiled, looking at the quick picture of him she had sketched. He looked so in love. “Magnus, do you...do you think about getting married?” she asked, head tilted curiously to one side.
Magnus thought about the question for a moment before nodding, “Yeah. I’ve thought about it a few times. I haven’t mentioned it to Alexander though. We’ve been together for almost two years now, but I feel like that might scare him.” Or it could assure him even more that Magnus wanted only him, “But we’re still pretty young. I think there’s plenty of time for that though.”
Clary nodded and smiled. "Plenty of time," she agreed. She and Jace hadn't been together as long as Magnus and Alec, and she often wondered if their future lay in that direction. She knew she wanted to be with him for the rest of her life, but did he? Like Magnus said, they all had plenty of time.
