Katou had never been in a flower shop in his life, and it felt weird. The place smelled like flowers, which he supposed was nice and reminded him a little bit of Wendy’s house - the place he was now beginning to think of as home - though he supposed he really should have expected that.
He was really kind of at a loss though. He wanted to buy flowers for his sister before he showed up at her door. It was the first time he was going to visit her in two years, and though she had seen him twice since (to tell him that their father was sick, and then again that he had died), the last real conversation they had had ended in Katou trying to attack her, and their father stepping in. Which is why he felt he really couldn’t show up without some sort of peace offering. What the hell kind of flowers were good for ‘Hey sis, we haven’t really talked in two years and last time we did I tried to beat you up. Sorry ‘bout that’? The roses he was looking at really seemed… too romantic. Or something.
Riza had looked up when the bell went to indicate a new customer and she smiled at the young man who entered, her smile turned slightly more amused as he looked a little lost. “Hello” she greeted him, moving out from the counter to come over to him, “Can I help you with anything? Flowers for a girlfriend perhaps?” she asked indicating the roses he was looking at. They were the usual flower of choice for men to get their loved ones or romantic interests.
Katou snorted. “I ain’t never bought flowers for a girlfriend in my life, and I’m not planning on starting now,” Katou scoffed. In a slightly less rude tone of voice, he added “I’m looking to get flowers for my sister. Like, something good for an apology or something?”
“Oh I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have assumed” Riza said with a small smile, living with Ed she was kind of used to rudeness without taking it personally. “Carnations and lilies are nice for apology flowers, does your sister have a favourite color?” she asked.
Katou shrugged. “I dunno,” he admitted. “I haven’t really seen her in a couplea years?” He tried to think back to when they were kids, with a frown. “I guess she used to wear a lot of blue and purple when we were younger?”
“Well those are lovely colors for flowers” Riza said, “So how about we see what we can put together and you can let me know if you think it will be okay. How does that sound?” She tried to involved her customers as much as possible, after all they needed to be completely happy with their purchases.
“Yeah,” Katou said. “I mean, whatever you think would work. I don’t know nothin’ bout none of this.” He gave a bit of a frown. “But not carnations. Every time I see those I think of prom or something stupid like that.”
“Okay. No roses and no carnations” Riza said, “I think I can work with that. Maybe lilies and orchids with some babys breath” she said almost the herself as she began moving around the shop gathering flowers for the bouquet.
Katou followed behind her, hands stuffed in the pockets, and really kind of hoping that no one saw him. “So like, the whole flower meanings thing, is that real? Like, a red rose means ‘do me’ and a bouquet of roses means like ‘fucking marry me’ or something but if they’re yellow it just means you’ve been friendzoned? Is that a thing, or something that chicks just made up?”
“Generally people use less...harsh terms but yes they do mean things. It’s actually something that has been around for a long time. The Victorians were actually the first ones to assign meanings but they had a much more limited supply then” she explained.
Well, that seemed like the kind of thing that Sae might be into. Maybe. She liked girlie things, so why wouldn’t she know the meaning of flowers. “Well, just make sure they don’t say nothing embarrassing,” Katou said.
“Nothing too sweet or soppy I promise” she assured the young man, “How about these?” she asked showing him the bouquet she had put together. “The hydrangea mean heartfelt emotion and the daisies mean cheerfulness”
That was possibly the girliest bouquet of flowers he had ever seen in his life, and he was almost regretting not just getting the roses and being done with it. Maybe something from a grocery store or something would cut it. But, well, it was pretty, and Sae would probably like it, and he was trying really hard to not cut any corners in his apology to his sister.
“It looks nice, I guess,” he said grudgingly. “You think she’ll like ‘em?” He had no idea why he was asking the flower shop lady, because it wasn’t as though she had ever met Katou’s sister before, but she was a girl and she knew flowers and stuff, so she’d probably have some sort of idea. Or something.
“Well I don’t have a brother but I have a nephew and I would be really happy if I got flowers like these” Riza said, “If she doesn’t like them find out what she would like and I’ll send them free of charge” she offered, because honestly she thought his sister would appreciate them as it was obvious he didn’t do this much.
“Really?” Katou asked, raising his eyebrows. “That’s a helluva deal. I guess I can’t go wrong with that.” He had picked this place because ‘Flower Alchemy’ was a far more interesting name than ‘Dale’s Florists,’ but that had obviously worked out in his favor.
“Really” Riza nodded, “Exactly. Win win and you’re sister is guaranteed to get flowers she likes. You’ll get good brother points” Riza told him with a smile. She had hoped her unique name would be a good selling point and obviously in this case it had worked.
“Cool,” Katou said, offering her a cheerful smile, because there really wasn’t anyway he could lose in this situation. Well, unless Sae threw the flowers back in his face and told him to fuck off and die, but his Dreams had implied that wouldn’t be her reaction and he was trying very hard not to think about that. “What’s the damage?”
“Wonderful” Riza nodded, moving back to the counter and beginning to wrap the flowers in pink and purple paper with a ribbon tied around it. “That will be thirty dollars” she told him, quoting a little under her usual but taking a liking to this kid. He reminded her a little of Ed.
That was actually a lot better than what Katou had been planning, and he couldn’t even bring himself to complain about the price. “Cool,” he said, fishing some crumpled bills out from his pocket. “You know, I thought buying flowers would be a bigger pain in the ass.”
“Had you gone somewhere else it might have been” Riza told him with a grin, “You were lucky enough to get me” She put the money in the till and handed him the receipt and flowers. “I hope your sister likes them, let me know either way alright?”
“Yeah, I can do that,” Katou said, shoving the receipt into his pocket before taking the flowers. “If I ever gotta buy flowers again,” he really hoped he never had to, “then I’ll come back here, that’s for sure.”
“Then I look forward to seeing you” Riza said, giving him a wave as he left, “Have a good day” she called after him with a smile.
