Two weeks. This had been going on for two weeks and to Raven, it seemed as though it was getting worse with every passing days. First the vampires, then the demons and she didn’t know what would bring it to an end. She knew it would end in Hell, but if it was someone else opening up hell, or if it was going to be her after all? There was a tension in the half-demon, a sort of current running through her with every passing day that seemed to grow more intense.
At the moment, she was doing a patrol with Damian. He might not be her Robin, but he was a Robin and that was all that mattered in the end. Dick was there, but he didn’t know about the Teen Titans and for something like this, some sort of makeshift of her team would be good. He did the patrolling thing as it was so it just worked out. Plus, there was safety in numbers, especially against demons, though they weren’t any sort of demons she’d come across in her own history. A point towards her not being the cause of Hell coming to Earth? It was an optimistic thought and Raven didn’t do optimism much.
Letting out a breath, she kept her senses on alert for any sort of disturbance where they would be needed.
Damian was glad that school was winding down, because with his constant patrolling he’d had to half ass his homework a little bit. He would do whatever work he could between the time he got home and the time the sun went down then for the rest of the night he would be out patrolling then sleep for only a couple of hours and hope he didn’t fall asleep in class. He would be happy when either school was over or the vampires and demons were gone. Or both really.
Tonight he was patrolling with Raven, decked out in his entire Robin costume, in need of the extra protection it provided as well as the random gadgets in his utility belt. “This crazy shit needs to stop. Who do we complain to in order for that to happen?”
If there was one thing Raven had learned in the past week, it was that she just didn’t do normal teenager things. She had tried, it had ended horribly and the lesson was reached loud and clear. She also realised that, as ridiculous as it was, seeing people talking about killing demons and how it was stress relief and whatever else made her anxious. She didn’t broadcast her lineage but it still dug at her when she knew it shouldn’t.
She couldn’t wait until this blew over and it wouldn’t be the hot topic of conversation anymore. Oh. And school. With the whole trying to graduate early thing, this whole skipping school to focus on this crisis, the late nights and barely paying attention when she was in school… She could only hope that it wouldn’t push her plans back.
Given this was a patrol, she was dressed as she was in the dreams, the cape, the leotard, boots and stones, no need for a glamour at the moment.
“Question of the century.” Sighing in annoyance, Raven continued her floating slightly behind Damian. There was something in the air. A pressure pushing downwards on her. And that was when she noticed it, the glowing markings of her destiny.
“N..no…” The fastest way to scare Raven? The markings. Dropping to the ground, she half expected Slade to show up, taunting her, to take her to wherever she was to open the portal. Something was about to happen and she had no idea what it was.
Damian had been scanning the area for potential vampires or demons when he heard Raven fall and his first thought was that something had gotten her, but as he turned around, he saw nothing but his friend on the ground. Rushing to her side, he dropped to his knees beside her, “Raven, are you alright?” It took a moment before Damian noticed the glowing marks, “Shit. This isn’t good, right?”
What did it mean!? There had been the vision, waking up with the markings and her panic. The research. The conversations on the network. The doubt was always there, that it would be her that would bring Hell to Orange County no matter what anyone tried to tell her…. even with evidence pointing to someone else.
“No...it’s not….”
Closing her eyes, the teen took a breath before looking at Damian.
“If it means what it did in the dreams…. Do you have somewhere that you can contain me?”
She hadn’t figured out the wards yet. She hadn’t made any… she didn’t have a safe place to go. And now her markings were glowing and that meant that either Hell was about to open up because she became the portal, or.. something was happening there and then elsewhere. Whatever it was? Raven didn’t want to risk being the cause.
“Contain you?” Damian’s brows rose behind his domino mask as he thought through everything that he knew about the Raven from his dream world. He’d only met her a few times, but he’d used the computers in the Bat Cave to research most of the other heros so that he’d know everything that Bruce knew about them. “Not really. Don’t exactly have a Bat Cave here.” He couldn’t think of a single place, off the top of his head, that could contain demony magic stuff.
Well, it was worth a shot. Oh this was very bad. She knew something was happening and she was terrified that it would be her fault in the end. Why couldn’t this be easier? Oh right, because this was Orange County and nothing was ever easy, here or in the Dreams.
“Right…”
So now what? How to keep her from potentially causing hell to open up. She knew that Zatanna was off somewhere on a lead, but the signs had to mean something. Something that was overlooked.
“Raven, what can I do?” There had to be something else that he could do it help her. Something he could do to prevent whatever was happening to his friend. “Has this happened in the dreams? What did you do then?” She was different from the Raven in his dreams and he had really only encountered her during his brief stint as part of the Teen Titans.
“The first time was a reminder about destiny. The second time, I opened the portal to hell.”
Which basically explained why she was so freaked out. Because really, portal to hell, especially given everything that was going on at the moment. She knew that the demons and vampires were from someone else’s dreams. Yet here she was, all symbols glowing as if she were to become the portal again. Just like in December.
“I don’t know. There was a room with wards that the others made to try and keep him from me. But it didn’t work.”
Damian tried to think. Tried to think about what they could do in this situation. He didn’t think that anyone would disagree that they were pretty much up shit’s creek without a paddle right now, but he was sure that there was something. In the dreams he was so good at thinking under pressure, but this was real life, which he knew was a pretty ridiculous thing to think right now considering what was going on. In most peoples’ real lives they didn’t have to worry about their friends becoming portals to hell.
“Hey, maybe it’s all in your head.” Damian wasn’t sure if this was going to work, but it was worth a shot. What other option did he have? “I mean, maybe if you think non hell portal thoughts it’ll stop. Think about how it’s not real and the dreams don’t control you.”
All she could do was look at Damian oddly. She understood the point, but given she had turned into a portal before, and that time the demon birds had come through then vanished after three days? She knew it was more than that. Whether she was going to be the portal or whatever the blonde girl’s prophecy had been was coming true, something was happening. But she was also afraid. So very afraid.
“Right….”
Well, it was worth a shot, and so she closed her eyes and started to chant to herself. Trying to meditate. But it wasn’t as easy as it usually was. High amounts of emotions not just from herself but from people afraid with the insanity going around were pushing through her defenses. It was hard to know how long she stayed there, but when she opened her eyes, the marks were gone as well as the oppressive feeling in the air that had been happening for two weeks now.
“.....Okay….” Looking around, Raven then looked to Damian, confused. Was she just an alarm clock? Was that what had happened?
Damian watched, part of him expecting the marks to glow brighter and for an explosion or something to follow, but as he watched Raven, the marks began to fade until they were gone completely and he was able to release the breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding in, “For a minute I didn’t think that was actually gonna work.” Boy was he glad that it had though.
That would have been very awkward if she had exploded while meditating. It would go against the entire point of it, really. But she wasn’t sure what it meant. Because she was pretty certain it wasn’t something as simple as it was all in her mind, not when the oppressive air seemed to vanish as well.
“I don’t think it’s as simple as that… but I do think that whatever’s been going on is over…” Still, she scanned the area, just to make sure. But there wasn’t anything that would block her senses. They were just there on the sidewalk, nothing of note around them. What the hell?
“So, what do we do now?” He wasn’t sure if they should keep patrolling or if they should go somewhere else. All this magic and hell portal stuff was really confusing to Damian and he would be very happy when it was all over.
That was the question, wasn’t it? Because there was the chance that there still might be demons and vampires out. But whatever it had been which had been controlling them, bringing them out? That was done. It was so hard to keep track of who was where and doing what, who to call for information.
“Keep patrolling, just to make sure nothing’s still out there.”
It seemed the best choice in all the uncertainty.
