Just keep breathing, Wanda thought to herself. Breathe in. Breathe out. In. Out. In. Out. Surely he has to stop running for a break soon, she hoped. The water bottle in her left hand had long ago stopped being the delicious, ice cooled, thirst-quenching drink it had started out as, but she would kill to be able to stop and take a drink from it nonetheless. They were approaching the middle of a park where there was a fountain and benches. People were sitting, talking, eating lunch, others running or rollerblading. Right now sitting was what she longed for. Anything but running with the burning in her lungs, the stitch in her side and the desert in her mouth.
Pietro was enjoying their leisurely run through the park, it was a slower pace than normal due to having his sister with him but he didn’t mind too much. It gave him time to look around. It was actually a nice park for running, possibly more suited to Wanda’s level too since most people looked to be taking it slowly. Glancing over at his twin he saw she seemed to be struggling and stopped. “Wanda? Are you alright?” he asked, not at all out of breath.
"Yeah," Wanda panted, stumbling to a stop and bending over to rest her hands on her knees while she caught her breath. "I just...just...I'm not used to it," she laughed breathily. "Sorry," she glanced up at him with a little grimace.
Pietro placed his hand on her back and rubbed, “It is okay. You should have said and we could go slower” he told her, “Come sit for a moment and have some water” he guided her a free seat.
"I don't want to hold you back," Wanda told him as they made their way to a nearby seat. Collapsing heavily onto the bench she took a few deep swallows of water from her bottle, gasping in relief when she was finished.
“It’s fine I could do with a slower pace anyway, it’s good for me” he assured her, “I don’t want you to break something trying to keep up when you don’t have to”
Wanda gave a breathy chuckle as she leaned her head back against the bench. “I won’t break, Pietro, I’m just out of shape,” she told him, patting him on the arm. “You’ve been running a lot longer than I have, I just need time to catch up, but I won’t do that without pushing myself,” she opened her water bottle and took another long drink. “Just give me a few minutes and I’ll be ready to go.”
“Okay, just don’t push yourself too much or you’ll be in pain for the next few days” he warned her, “Take whatever time you need and tell me when you need to take a break next time”
“Yes, sir,” Wanda mock saluted him. “Well, I’m pretty sure I can make it home after a rest, and maybe a nice long bath when we get there,” she grinned and turned her head to look at him. “Are you glad to be back out and about, brother?” she asked, he seemed happier and more like himself.
Pietro rolled his eyes at her, “You know I’m twelve minutes older than you” he quipped, using the old line he always used when she back chatted him. “We will make sure you get rest and a bath” he promised, “I am much happier” he admitted, “I would rather be trapped outside than in”
“Yeah, yeah,” Wanda teased, giving him a gentle shove as she laughed. “How many times do you think I should come running with you then? To be fit and strong like you,” she asked with a grin. She was starting to feel better after having sat for a few minutes, but when she’d first agreed to this, she hadn’t thought about how often she might have to do it. Now seemed like as good a time as any to ask.
“To be as fit as me? Everyday” he told her, “And even then I do not think that you will get there” he teased her with a wink, “Not many people could” he boasted. Before replying seriously, “To get fit and healthy, I think you should come at least a couple of times a week”
Wanda rolled her eyes at his bravado. He had a huge ego when it came to his fitness. “A couple of times a week?” she turned desperate eyes to him, feeling like this more than once a week seemed insurmountable right now. “Please say you’re joking.”
He did but it was kind of warranted. He was very very fit. “I thought that was going easy on you” he told her, “You don’t have to push this hard. Go at your own pace, you’ll find it gets easier. I promise”
Wanda groaned, knowing they’d have to start running again soon. She just had to stay focused. Stay on target: her bath. That was her target.
Pietro laughed, “It’s okay sister, you will survive. I promise you that” he’d take care of her and run the bath for her when they got in. Like a good brother.
“If you say so,” Wanda sighed. “You’re going to make me move, aren’t you,” she turned her head to look at him.
“Yes, moving again. Don’t let yourself get stiff” Pietro said, “Want a piggy back?” he teased, he remembered doing that as kids.
“Pietro! Not in the middle of the park,” Wanda laughed as she leant forward to lean her elbows on her knees, they were surely too old for such shenanigans. Taking a deep breath, she nodded to him. “Let’s go.”
