Audrey arrived home from the bakery with the flowers in hand. She closed the front door with her foot, dropped her keys and purse on an end table, then headed into the kitchen. “Merlin?” She called out, setting the flowers down on the counter.
“You and Benny okay?” Of course that’s the first thing she’d ask arriving home.
“We’re good” Merlin called out, picking up his son from the playmat they’d been laying on and moving towards Audrey’s voice. He’d dressed Ben in his ‘My mum is the best’ sleeper suit that his own mother had sent them and he looked adorable.
Entering the kitchen he smiled when he noticed that the flowers had been delivered as promised. “Work good?” he asked with a grin.
“Look at my boys!” Audrey said, and turned to wrap her arms around both of them together. She kissed one and then the other, then twice more each. “I love you. Thank you for the flowers.” She gave Merlin one more kiss--a long and meaningful one.
“Did you talk to your Mum?” She asked, moving to the fridge.
Merlin’s arm slipped around Audrey as they kissed, Ben gurgling happily where he rested in Merlin’s other arm. “We love you too. More than anything” Merlin told her, kissing her briefly once more before releasing her.
“I did. We skyped her to show her Ben in his onesie” he grinned, “She wants to skype you later one mother to another” Merlin’s mum thought the world of Audrey and loved talking to her. Merlin was rather glad of that.
“All right. We’ll work it into the busy schedule for today.” Busy schedule of eating junk food, lazing about, and sex during Ben’s nap. Though, Merlin’s Mum didn’t have to know about that last bit. “I’ll make sure to Skype with her before it gets too late over there.” The time differences were hard.
Merlin nodded, “Thanks love. You’re amazing” he told her with a smile and a kiss to her cheek. “How was the bakery? Busy?” he asked her, he hadn’t tried to convince her not to go. He knew she enjoyed it and she’d only been there for a few hours.
“Pretty busy.” Audrey said, grinning softly. She leaned her head against his shoulder after the kiss to her cheek, taking a moment to cuddle up against her favorite man in the whole world. “Lots of moms coming in with their children--and adult children. Y’know. All sorts. Everyone wished me a happy Mothers’ Day, too.” Since it was her first. It was really nice of her customers to remember her like that.
“Well it’s a wonderful choice of place to hang out for Mother’s Day breakfast and I’m not at all surprised everybody wished you a happy Mother’s Day. I’ve never seen customers who were so happy when a baby was born. The sheer number of cards we got was pretty impressive love”
Audrey nodded, almost blushing. She was so honored and humbled. It literally brought tears welling up in her eyes that so many people loved them both enough to send cards. Her, especially, but there had been quite a few from Stark Industries, too. She’d saved every one. “I know. I’m so… it makes me a little emotional to think about how much people love us. And I love every one of them, too.”
It was true that both their work places had been incredibly supportive from Audreys customers and staff at the bakery to Merlin’s colleagues and friends at Stark. But then they were two of the nicest and kindest people in the world so it shouldn't have been surprising. "We're lucky to have such support" he said, even he hadn't been unaffected by the sheer amount of love that had come their way.
Audrey pressed one more kiss against Ben’s head, then pulled out of the hug. “Well, I’m definitely ready for my mother’s day brunch now. Worked up an appetite at the bakery. But, as promised, I didn’t spoil it by snacking.”
“Well done” Merlin praised her, “I knew your willpower was strong enough. We’ll have the best brunch ever, would you like to sit outside for it love? The weather is very nice today”
“Well, we do have to take advantage of our beautiful patio furniture.” Audrey said. She slipped Ben from Merlin’s arms and blew raspberries into the baby’s neck. Ben squealed with mirth, and Audrey carried him out onto the patio. She could sit and nurse the baby while Merlin set up for lunch.
"Precisely my thinking" he said smiling as he watched his wife and son until they moved outside. Focusing on the task he set up the best brunch he could for them, even pouring orange juice into champagne flutes before loading the tray and taking it all outside.
It didn’t take long to nurse. Benny was hungry, so they nursed on both sides. Then the baby was fast asleep in Audrey’s arms. She had to wake him up a little to take him inside for his nap, kissing Merlin as they passed each other. Things were so unbelievably domestic, it might have been boring. But to Audrey this little family was perfection. She came back out a minute later, relieved that the baby was sleeping and hungry for some lunch. She slipped into her chair and lifted her orange juice champagne. “Thank you for lunch,” she said, clinking it against his glass.
He didn’t always sleep through the night but he did sleep well when he went so they were grateful for that. “You deserve it for being such an incredible wife and mother” he told her clinking their glasses, “I hope you enjoy your first mother's day”
Audrey beamed. “Thank you.” She sipped from the glass and set it down with a happy, little sigh. “I’m very much enjoying Mother’s Day. And Father’s Day is coming up, you know. We’ll have to figure out how to celebrate that together.”
Merlin took her hand and smiled contentedly, "Something similar to this is perfect" he told her, spending the day with their little family was perfect.
“Okay. I think I can organize something like this on such short notice.” Audrey said, and leaned across the corner of the table so she could steal a kiss from her husband. “...I feel like we should be taking advantage of the sleeping baby a bit better.”
“Mmm I feel like you might be right” Merlin smiled letting his fingers slide over hers, “I can think of a few things to do”
“Can you? Are these indoor activities?” Audrey teased. “Because I was hoping for indoor activities. Preferably something in the bedroom.”
“It’s like you can read my mind, indoor bedroom activities are exactly what I was thinking of” Merlin told her with a smile, kissing her hand.
Audrey didn’t have to be told twice. She climbed up out of her chair, her fingers lacing with her husband’s, and she started into the house to drag him to bed.
