Who: Alyssa and Peeta
What: Meeting the parents.
When: Saturday, May 3rd
Where: Santa Monica Pier
Warnings: PG for PDAs and dorkiness
Laughing loudly, Alyssa shook her head. “I can’t believe how good you are at these carnival games,” she grinned. She and Peeta had spent the day on the boardwalk, and true to his word, he’d won her an alarming amount of stuffed toys. They were going to go have dinner with his parents, which was why Alyssa had opted to wear a dress that hit her closer to mid-thigh than most of her other skirts.
She wrapped her arms around his waist, kissing him on the cheek. “I owe you so much sex now, I’ll be paying you off until we’re eighty.”
It had been quite amusing to be able to show off his carnival skills. As a kid he had been slightly obsessed with them and figured out how to master them, which was something he still remembered to this day and only got better as he grew older. Thankfully they were able to deposit most of them back into the car so that Alyssa wouldn’t be stuck carrying them around all evening. Although, his parents were certainly going to question why he had so many stuffed animals if they got a look into his car.
The kiss on the cheek earned a laugh and he looped an arm around her before giving her a proper kiss, “Oh really? You want to be having geriatric sex with me? I think this relationship may stand the test of time if you’re willing to admit that already.” It was certainly a comment that made him happy because he felt so strongly for her and hoped that they would be together when they were eighty.
“I hope I’m bloody well having sex when I’m eighty. Just because I’m old doesn’t mean I want to stop shagging,” Alyssa beamed. She sighed happily when he kissed her, threading her fingers through his hair and pulling him closer. “I’m absolutely terrified of meeting your family, you know. You promise they’ll be gentle?” It probably came from her not really having any family of her own to speak of.
“I can’t see you letting anything stop you from having sex,” he pointed out to her with a happy smile as he allowed himself to be pulled closer. He understood her nerves when it came to meeting his parents, but he knew that it was going to go quite well. It was easier for him since he didn’t have to meet her mother, but he wished that he had gotten the chance. Her exes knew her, but he would be the one that didn’t get to meet the woman that could have given him incredibly embarrassing stories of her.
“I promise they will. I don’t see how they can’t love you, I already do,” the words just slipped out easily and it took a beat before he realized what he had told her. His cheeks colored a deep red and he hoped he hadn’t just shoved a foot into his mouth. It had been a month already and he knew that he loved her. It was probably way too early to say something like that, so he would understand if she just laughed in his face.
“Damn right. I think I’d miss the closeness, you know?” She smiled up at him, kissing his chin for a moment. She was returning back to flat-footedness from her tiptoes when he said that he loved her. Instead of reacting poorly, she just smiled at him, a tiny lopsided thing filled with wonder. “Really?”
That smile was a thing of beauty and only reinforced his knowledge that he did love her. Someone who was willing to put up with all his weird intricacies and he wanted to learn every bit he could about hers. It was a relief that she hadn’t immediately written him off and he let out a soft breath, “Yes.”
“Well, good. Now when I accidentally say I love you too, I won’t have to worry about you running away from me.” She let out a nervous giggle before cupping his cheeks and kissing him gently. She’d told him once before, when he fell asleep again after the ordeal of his heart stopping. It was habit now, to stay awake a bit longer than he did, running her fingers through his hair, just in case his dreams took him away from her.
“I don’t think running away will ever be a problem,” his smile had only grown when she confirmed that she loved him as well. When he asked her out he certainly hadn’t expected this, but something just clicked so perfectly with her. Everything that warred inside of him was silenced when he was around her and he had never been happier. The kiss was returned and he pulled her even closer, “I am a very lucky man right now because you are so out of my league.”
“Oh, shut it, you’re a handsome business owner war hero, how are you out of my league? Technically I’m just a uni student.” She was grinning against his chest even though he probably couldn’t see it, and she wrapped her arms more tightly around him. “And I don’t know, you could always decide you’re too young for commitment, that you want to bathe in ladies or something?”
“I’m older than you,” he pointed out with a laugh as he reached up a hand to stroke her hair, “I did the bathing in ladies thing. I think what I’ve been through made me grow up a lot more than most guys my age. I think you’re the only lady for me right now and especially now that you’ve said you love me.” Oh yes, he was certainly thinking about their future together, but that wasn’t something to discuss for a while. For now he was going to enjoy being in love with her.
“You’re not that much older than me,” she grinned. “Oh god, are your parents going to think I’m too young for you?” She felt her eyes go wide. What if they hated her?
“Oh my god, no they’re not going to think that. It’s like what, a year and a half difference? At least you’re not thirteen or something,” there was amusement in his eyes as he watched her and then swept her up lightly to spin her around. Once her feet were back on the ground he placed a hand on her cheek and looked her in the eye, “It’s going to go fine. They will love you and we can go live happily ever after because you survived the scariest part of a relationship.”
She wasn’t used to being picked up so much, but she found she really liked it. “Dunno, sometimes I act thirteen,” she teased. “I do, though. Love you. I love you quite a bit, actually.” Alyssa felt her cheeks go pink as she said it out loud with him being awake to hear it, wanting to get that out of the way.
“I love you too, Alyssa Hamilton,” he answered with a smile and kissed her. It was something new entirely to be saying that aloud since he had never fallen in love before. She was holding his heart and in this moment he realized he didn’t care if she ended up breaking it because at least he got to experience this, “Alright, do you want to do anything else before we head over to their place? We could get some funnel cake or ride the ferris wheel.”
“Funnel cake?” She cocked her head to the side. “Let’s try that because it sounds terrifying and disgusting, which means it’s probably amazing.” Ferris wheels she’d been on, weird American not-cake, she hadn’t had. Besides, her heart was thumping loudly in her ears, which probably meant she needed to eat.
“I am thoroughly enjoying all the weird foods I get to introduce you to,” his hand slipped into hers as he lead the way towards where he had last seen someone selling funnel cake, “Oh, and I have some exciting news that I wanted to tell you before anyone else.” Yup, they had reached that point where he wanted her to know things first. Okay well, his family knew, but none of his friends knew about this yet.
“Me too, because they’re all delicious.” Alyssa had always had a rather voracious appetite, but since she’d gotten powers, it had only gotten worse. “Are you pregnant? Peeta, did I get you ...” She paused, and looked around, lowering her voice for dramatic effect. “Pregnant?”
“I’m not sure if I would consider that exciting, more like distressing,” he answered honestly with a laugh as he leaned over to place a kiss on her temple, “And I would have appreciated if you warned me about that side effect of your powers when we first hooked up. But so far we can safely mark children off the list of things that is happening right now. But, my exciting news is that the Food Network called me to come back for another baking competition this month.”
“I honestly don’t know how you’d ... you know. Deliver.” Alyssa smiled and shrugged, leaning more heavily against him. “Well, I’m glad you’re not going to be the mother of my chil - really? That’s brilliant! Gladatorial bakery combat? What’s the theme this time?” She was addicted to food shows, and while she tried not to fangirl him or his family, she would probably insist on being in the audience.
“If I tell you then I have to kill you,” he joked playfully before shaking his head with a grin, “It’s a July Fourth type of competition, so that’s about all I can tell you. But I will certainly make sure that you’re in the audience for it. My brothers are going to fight over who gets to be my helper.” He loved that she was so into that kind of competition because it made things a lot easier to describe to her. Food was important in his life and she was almost just as obsessed and it made things a lot easier.
“That’s so, they don’t really have a term for a sous chef in bakery cooking, do they?” She shrugged, then jumped onto him, wrapping her arms around him and snogging him properly. “I’m just so proud of you and pleased for you and does your family know?” She mostly rambled when she was upset or elated.
“I don’t believe so, but I can always make something up for them,” Peeta returned the kiss and laughed as he lifted a hand up to brush some of her hair behind her ear, “And yes, they know. It’ll probably be discussed tonight. Now, stop distracting me with your lips so we can get some funnel cake.” A playful grin accompanied his comment as he started to pull her along. They were both so easily distracted, but he loved it.
“Right, right, weird cake that sounds like it should be made of plastic.” She nibbled at his neck while they stood in line, ignoring the evil eye they were getting from some parents. She was a teenager, she was in love - she was going to do PG-13 things in public.
Peeta tightened his arm around his waist and let out a laugh. He had fully come to expect this out of her and he certainly enjoyed acting like a teenager in public. He kissed the top of her head before it was their turn at the counter and he placed their order. It was probably best to start with the original before trying anything else and he pulled her along so they could wait for it. “Have I told you how beautiful you look tonight?”
She shook her head. “No, but thank you for thinking so. You always look handsome, so I assume you know the sentiment is implied.” Blinking, she watched the man dump powdered sugar over their cake, eyebrow raised. “So, booking an appointment for the GP tomorrow to check for diabetes.”
“You won’t get diabetes from this. You might get it from kissing me though,” Peeta winked at her and couldn’t help but chuckle at his horrible joke. It was absolutely atrocious, but he was proud of it. He grabbed the cake when it was done, procured some utensils, and lead her over to a table, “And glad you think I look handsome. I still don’t know how I managed to snag you, but I’ll let my charm continue to try and keep you around.”
Alyssa just stuck her tongue out at him for the joke, grinning afterward. “You’re an idiot, but you’re my idiot.” She sat down next to him at the table, waiting to be shown how to eat the flat disc with a lot of powdered sugar on top. There had to be a technique. “I’m not going anywhere, you know.”
“I am going to remind you that you’ve claimed me as your own the next time you think I’ve done something stupid. And I’m glad you’re not going anywhere. I intend to keep you as long as possible,” Peeta commented before cutting into the funnel cake, spearing pieces on his fork, and taking a bite. The powdered sugar managed to get on his face and shirt, but he just quickly dusted it off with a napkin.
“I’m sure you will. Do you often do stupid things?” Alyssa was determined to eat this delicately, but it meant she needed to put her hair up. After twining it carefully with an elastic, she cut a piece, knocked it against the remainder to loosen the extra sugar, then forked it into her mouth. Still got all over her, but at least she’d tried. “That’s so good, there should be a law.”
“Depends on the day of the week and the current phase of the moon,” he answered solemnly with an amused smile as he watched her putting her hair up and attempt to eat this nicely. Of course the powder sugar flew everywhere and he laughed, “It is amazing. And I promise we can get the powder sugar off your shirt before we go to meet them. Here, let’s try this.” He put a piece on his fork and held it out to her, holding his hand underneath it, and moved it closer to her so it would potentially not fall all over her shirt.
“You’re a boy, what am I saying, of course you do stupid things.” She winked at him, laughing a bit when he presented a way to try to be tidy. “I can dust off my shirt, I suppose. I doubt this is going to work, but thank you.” Leaning in, she ate the bit off of the fork, sighing contentedly. “Do you know how to make this? I need to know how to make this.”
Really, she just liked spending time with him. He was a source of comfort and amazement; he was always teaching her things, always so patient, and yet funny and vital. He reminded her that they were both strong, had both seen awful things and come out the other side.
“Doing stupid things is totally ingrained in our genes,” he pointed out to her before shaking his head at her next question, “And I don’t know how to make it exactly. I know how it’s done, but I’ve never attempted it. I don’t have a big fryer anywhere that could make this happen. I think you can buy a kit to help make it.” He took another bite of the cake and grinned. It really was delicious and he couldn’t wait until they tried other kinds - strawberries on top sounded amazing. And if he could read her mind right now he would totally be blushing because that’s how he felt about her. She made him so incredibly happy and he hadn’t felt like this before. It was something he wanted to hold onto forever and cherish it.
Instead of talking more, she cupped his cheek and leaned in to kiss him. He tasted like powdered sugar, even moreso than usual, and she just wanted to be close to him. She sighed a little, snuggling closer, her eyes closed. “I have a fryer at home, but it’s wee.”
His arms went instantly around her to help pull her close as the kiss was returned. They had certainly turned into that ridiculous couple that was full of PDA, but it wasn’t something he would ever complain about. The comment about the fryer earned a chuckle, “Well, we can always try it. We should probably get going over to the house or else we’ll be here all night. You can bring the cake along and eat it in the car.”
She blinked at him. “I can barely eat it here, you want me to eat it in the car?” Laughing, she hurriedly cut it in half, then half again, sticking a huge bite into her mouth. “Just eat faster, weirdy!”
“Weirdy,” he rolled his eyes at her before shoving a piece into his mouth. He tried to chew it, but it really was a lot of cake. He grinned before leaning in to playfully kiss her with his mouth full of funnel cake and getting powdered sugar all over her. If she was going to call him weird and force him to eat all this cake then she was going to suffer the consequences.
Giggling against him, she ended up getting sugar on him too, which lead - naturally - to her getting a piece of cake, taking a fingerful of the sugar, and smearing it across his cheek before giggling madly.
He finished chewing as much as he could so that he could properly talk to her. He swallowed before smirking at her, “You’re going to have to clean that up.” And oh how he wanted to just completely cover her in powdered sugar right now, but they had to look presentable when they got to his parent’s house, so he would suffer for her amusement.
Alyssa sighed as if it would be awful torture to do so, and she kissed along his cheek, making sure to help him with his sugar issue before dabbing a napkin against his cheek. “There. Presentable for your mum and dad,” she beamed.
The kisses and napkin made him laugh because he honestly expected her to just lick his cheek and leave it at that. But that beautiful smile on her face made him lean in to press his forehead against hers, “I love you.” Yep, he was a complete goner for her and she absolutely knew it.
She closed her eyes, feeling comfortable and as genuinely loved as she ever had. “I love you too, Peeta. But we should get going, I don’t want to be late and give your parents a bad impression of me.”
“They will love you no matter what,” he pointed out to her with a smile, giving her a gentle peck, before pulling away and taking a last bite of the funnel cake. He stood up, holding his hand out to her, and waited to help, “Let’s get going, beautiful.”
Hopping up, she threaded her fingers loosely through his, smiling to herself. “All right, handsome.”
