Sarah had arrived early to an appointment at a prospective school for Kira so she stood outside with some other parents who were waiting for their children to finish for the day. She’d been to two others in the area so far and this would be her last. She was really hoping to get her in soon so she could start after spring break.
She’d been working with a number of contacts she’d made when she’d gone around offering her services and it sounded like the local government office were keen on her idea. They’d liked her business plan at least.
Roy had worked out his work schedule so that while Lian was in school, he got out just before she did unless they were working on a case, which they weren’t at the moment, so he arrived with time to spare and instead of waiting in the car, he got out to wait near the doors. Roy was usually one of the younger parents there considering Lian was born when he was eighteen and sometimes he still felt a little self conscience about it. Not as much as when Lian had first started school and he’d sometimes get mistaken for her older brother, but every now and then it felt like the older parents were judging him for having a child so young.
When Sarah noticed the, admittedly attractive, man standing at the school doors obviously waiting for a child she decided now was as good a time as any to get the opinion of a parent who had a child at the school before listening to the school itself try and prove to her that it was perfect. “Hi” she said with a smile, “I hate to bother you but I was wondering if you could help me?”
Roy hadn’t been expecting anyone to approach him, but he didn’t mind it, “I can try to. What’s up?” Part of him was expecting to be hit on, which wouldn’t really be a bad thing, but he did like Buffy, so there was that. Either way, he was going to be polite and besides, she had a pretty cool accent and he kind of wanted to hear her talk again.
As attractive as he was it hadn’t even occurred to Sarah to flirt with him, she was swearing off men for a while at least until she got settled with work and Kira. “Thank you” she said, “I’ve just moved here and I’m looking for schools for my eight year old daughter. I know they’re going to tell me how wonderful they are but I thought it might be a good idea to hear it from someone who has a child here already. I’m right that you do aren’t I? You aren’t just some weirdo who hangs around schools?” her lips twitched into a smile.
Her question reminded him of when he’d made his post about bra shopping for Lian and he chuckled, “No, I’m definitely not some weirdo who hangs out around schools. My daughter goes to school here. Fourth grade.” Her accent told him where abouts she’d moved from, so he didn’t ask that particular question. “What brought you out here?” He asked instead.
"Excellent" she said with a grin, "My brother moved here for work and we're pretty close so I've been working on moving us here too. I just googled good schools in the area and this one came up."
“That’s awesome. Sometimes I wish that my daughter had a sibling, but that requires a few things that I don’t have right now,” One of those things being an official girlfriend who also wanted kids so for the time being, Lian was an only child, but Roy was also an only child and he’d turned out fine, “Are you meeting with the principle?” It felt like not that long ago that Roy had been in her shoes, meeting with the principle to enroll Lian.
"Yeah Kira is going to be an only child as far as I can see but I don't think that's a bad thing" Sarah smiled, she had no plans for more kids really. "I am" she nodded, "He sounded nice but sometimes people do you know?"
Roy nodded, “Yeah, I’m not too worried about Lian being an only child. I’m an only child and I can still socialize with people and share just fine.” He smirked at Sarah and crossed his arms over his chest, “He’s pretty nice. Didn’t give me a hard time or anything. So, you should be fine. Unless he’s had a personality change since I talked to him or has been replaced with a clone or something.”
“Exactly, Kira is pretty smart so I’m happy with her development” she laughed lightly, “That would either be handy or scary I’m not sure which” she grinned, “But I’m glad to hear he’s nice. I’ll be more inclined to believe him when he tells me how good the school is then” Since he seemed happy to send his child here and Sarah had a good feeling about him.
Roy smiled and glanced at his watch, “Looks like the bell should ring soon. Do you know how to get to the office from here?” They were waiting outside the front door, which was the quickest way to the office, but if she’d never been there before, it was easy to get lost.
“Actually my plan was just to look a little lost and ask someone in the hope they’d take pity on me” Sarah said with a smile.
Roy laughed and turned towards the door, “When you go in, go up the stairs to the main floor then turn left and go down to the end of the hall. The principal's office is the second door on the right. Well, the secretaries office is that one and then the principal’s office is inside there. That’s where a lot of people tend to get lost.”
“Thank you very much” she said just before the bell rang, “I think this is my cue to get in before the masses escape. Have a good afternoon and cheers for your help”
