Anna knocked on the door of the office. She was hugging her notebook to her chest, a heavy backpack hanging from her shoulders. It wasn’t the first time she’d ever introduced herself to a professor before, and likely wouldn’t be the last. She was a little nervous, but wanted to make a good impression. After all, this professor taught a bunch of the different subjects in the English department that she was considering taking for a minor in modern literature.
That would go well with her Art History major, right? Plenty of things that she can do with that degree. Silly girl.
Anyway, she wasn’t sure. She wanted to talk to the professor first. Could she take two of these classes in the fall?
Ezra had been teaching college for about a year now. He had to admit it was quite different than high school. Most students took him a lot more seriously. Though that could also be due to the fact that he was permanent now and not just a substitute. And then there was the fact that he had his own office. Yeah, he much preferred being a college professor.
His office certainly came in handy. It was a lot easier to concentrate there when grading papers than an empty classroom. Not to mention how comfortable his office chair was. When he had time between his classes he often found himself in there, which is precisely where he was at the moment. Going over some essays. He was lost in one of them when he heard a knock on his door, startling him for a moment. “Come in,” he called out to the student, once he gained his composure, setting the papers aside for now.
Anna pushed the door open and poked her head into the office. She wasn’t really sure what she was expecting--she’d seen a bunch of College Professor’s offices. Just introducing herself, keeping up with things, turning in extra assignments and the like. She expected an English Professor’s office to be filled with books, really. Since English. Books. Made sense.
She broke into a smile as she saw the man behind the desk. “Hello! Professor Fitz?”
Anna was correct, there were a number of books in Ezra’s office. However, it wasn’t exactly filled with books. He couldn’t spend all his time reading. He had papers to grade, classes to teach, not to mention his own writing.
“That’s me,” Ezra replied looking up at the girl. He was fairly certain she wasn’t one of his students. Past or present. He would have remembered the pretty red head. “What can I do for you?” he asked motioning for her to take a seat in chair on the opposite said of his desk.
Anna's smile was bright as she moved into the office. "Hello! I'm Anna Arendelle, and I'm considering minoring in English," she moved to the seat, giving a gentle "thank you" as she sat down. Apparently, Anna didn't beat around the bush. She was here for a purpose, and didn't want to waste the professor's time. "I wanted to ask you what classes you think I should take for that minor."
“Nice to meet you Anna Arendelle,” Ezra greeted repeating her full name, before a small frown formed on his face. “Just a minor in English?” he was teasing of course, and the frown was fake. “What major could possibly be more important than English?” more teasing.
“As far as classes go. It depends what you are most interested in. I assume you have already taken English 101?” even if she hadn’t taken it with him she had to have at some point it was a GE course after all. “If you are just starting out I suggest classes that explore the literature more, such as ‘Topics in English and American Literature, Society Law and Literature, The Poetic Imagination, Realism and Romance, to name a few.”
Anna chuckled softly. “It’s a very important subject. But my passion lies elsewhere. I know, I know, I know how wrong I am about the whole thing,” she said, teasing playfully. “My major is Art History.” She nodded, and pulled out her schedule. “I’ve already taken my two English requirements. That is, if I pass this semester.” She said, though she was well on track for another 4.0. “I’m just trying to put together my schedule for the fall.”
“I’m sure you will,” she had to be a good student if she was already coming to him trying to figure out classes for the fall. The spring semester had barely even started. Clearly this girl liked to be prepared. “Art History is interesting too. It’s not English, but still a fine subject.” He would probably never approve of anything over English though. “Well did any of those sound interesting to you?”
Anna beamed at that thought. He approved of her choice, even if it wasn’t the one he’d have made. That was a good sign in a teacher. She was liking this guy already!
“I’m probably more interested in poetry and short stories than I am in the longer stuff right now,” Anna felt a little embarrassed about admitting that, but went on, “And I’m really into Young Adult literature and Genre Fiction… you know?” There was nothing wrong with the commercial stuff, right?
“Well I do teach Intro to Poetry as well as The Poetic Imagination and The Craft of Fiction. As far as young adult literature I don’t teach any classes that have to do with that really, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t other professors that don’t. I’m not the only English Professor here,” he laughed because that was obvious. He was also not the only one that taught the classes he just mentioned.
“I figured getting a class on Poetry in is probably a good idea,” Anna said. “I mean, any English major--or minor, as the case may be--worth her salt has to be well versed in poetry.” She explained unnecessarily. “So I might take The Poetic Imagination. That counts toward my Minor, doesn’t it? Fulfill requirements?”
“It counts,” he assured her before opening up one of the drawers in his desk pulling out some pamphlets. It was lame but he was required to keep them on hand. “Here,” he said handing them to here. “There’s a list of all the classes you need to take for an English major in there.” He had already named off some of the classes he taught, but she deserved to be well informed about all the classes. “You can take that with you, look it over. You can always come back if you have more questions.”
“Thank you!” Anna said, accepting the pamphlets. You’d better believe she’d read them cover to cover before she made her ultimate decisions. “I will.” Anna stood from her chair, grinning brightly. Now she had even more homework! Should she be this pleased about that? Maybe. Maybe not. She shouldered her backpack once more. “I’ll see you next semester.”
