Sharon was going to Aramis and Porthos’ place for Easter Dinner, after spending the day with the Marses and her cousin Peggy, and she wanted to bring something yummy. To both places. She wasn’t the best cook in the world, and didn’t want to burn down her condo. Also, she wasn’t sure how much time she was going to have to prepare… best to just order some stuff, pick it up Saturday, and have it ready to go.
So she headed into Mellarky Bakery to see her good friend Peeta. She was wearing a summery maternity dress, and sunglasses, which she pushed up into her hair as she stepped through the front doorway.
Easter was quite a big holiday for Peeta and he had been working on all sorts of goodies in the weeks leading up to the day. There were all sorts of festive cookies, bars, pies, cupcakes, and he was certainly taking custom orders if people wanted it. Apparently bunny cakes were quite popular right now. He was currently putting some carrot shaped cookies into the cases up front when he saw Sharon enter the bakery.
“Hey Sharon, you’re looking nice today. Did everyone enjoy your baby cupcakes?” He really hoped that they did and he was glad to see her come by again.
“Yes,” Sharon said, giving him a bright smile. It was so nice of him to remember her, to call her by name. She knew this was the kind of bakery she liked. Especially with such a handsome baker behind the counter. She tinged slightly pink as she moved forward. “They were absolutely perfect. Everyone loved them. And I passed along the name and phone number of the bakery to all my friends in my pregnancy support group. You’ll probably be getting some orders from those ladies.”
“Awesome. I can’t wait. Thank you so much for doing that,” he really did appreciate it when customers recommended him to other people. It meant that he was doing a good job and there were high expectations coming along with it. It also meant that his business was going to continue to grow, “So, what can I help you with today?” Obviously she needed something today and he was suspecting probably something for Easter since everyone was coming in for that.
“Well, I’m going to Easter Brunch with my roommate and her father, and then to dinner with more friends,” Sharon explained, tucking some hair behind her ears. “I was thinking I should probably bring some sweets. To thank them for inviting me over?”
“Oh that’s a great idea. What were you thinking? I’ve got some pie right now as well if you want to go with something bigger. Otherwise, cupcakes, bunny cookies, and things like that,” Peeta was definitely getting quite stocked for the holiday and he couldn’t wait until it was over so he could lighten the load in the case. But keeping it stocked helped quite a bit.
“I hadn’t thought about pie. That sounds lovely, actually. What kind of pies do you have?” Sharon asked, moving over to the case to take a look in through the glass front. “I can get two pies and eat two servings in one day.” She grinned.
“I’ve got coconut cream pie, french silk, carrot cake, lemon meringue, and strawberry,” Peeta explained to her as he gestured down to where the pie was at the bottom. He had a handful pre-made in the back that he could box up for her, but if she wanted any longer she would have had to wait a day or two for him to make more.
“Strawberry.” Sharon said, grinning brightly. She hadn’t hesitated a titch, just bent down to take a look into the case. “I’ll have a strawberry and a french silk, please.” God, those pies looked heavenly.
A quick pause, then she stood up straight again. “You don’t sell by the slice, do you?” Sheepish smile.
“I can certainly sell you a slice,” Peeta knew exactly why she wanted one and he was more than happy to give her a taste of what she would be taking home with her, “Be right back!” He went into the back to grab a strawberry and french silk to give her to take home and then dished up a slice of the strawberry before returning and going to the register, “Anything else, Sharon?”
Sharon beamed. “Thanks, Peeta!” She called after him as he popped into the back. She pulled out her wallet and met him at the cash register. “No, I don’t think so. You’re so kind. How much for the pies?” She asked, then handed over her credit card. She had some singles for the tip jar, too.
After telling her the total he grabbed the card and swiped it for her, “And don’t worry, it’s easy to be kind for such a great customer. So, how much longer until the little girl makes her appearance in the world?” He was curious because she certainly looked like she was getting closer to her due date and he hoped everything went well for her. The receipt printed and he held it out to her for a signature.
She was looking bigger and bigger, but she was still carrying high. “Not until July,” Sharon said, sounding almost disappointed about how much longer she had to wait. “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure to come back in for Baby Shower cupcakes and ‘Welcome to the World’ cupcakes and everything.” She grinned. She wanted to support this bakery. Peeta was wonderful.
“That would be awesome. And you can certainly go for a cake instead if you don’t want to go with cupcakes. I’m also really good at making smash cakes for when she hits her first birthday,” he had to admit that smash cakes were one of his favorite things to do because he loved seeing how kids would destroy them, “And July will be here before you know it. At least you don’t have to worry about being pregnant through all of summer.”
Sharon grinned softly. She kinda couldn’t wait for that day. She had a long time to go, but it was going to come fast. So she’d been told. She was already upgrading her digital camera and phone to one with a better camera and everything. “Thank goodness. I’ve turned into such a wimp when it comes to heat.”
“Haha, I think everyone is like that, but worse with a pregnancy, I’m sure,” he commented with a smile as he handed over a fork and napkin so she could eat the slice of pie, “Let me know what you think of this when you’re finished. I tried something a little bit different with the strawberries and want to make sure it still tastes great.”
He was so understanding. What a kind person. Sharon smiled warmly, and reached forward to accept the fork. “I will. Thank you.” The smile on her lips spread. “I can’t wait to try it. I should let you get back to work. You don’t mind if I sit, do you?” There were tables. She could sit and eat the pie quickly before heading out.
“Go for it. I wasn’t going to make you wait to try out the pie, which is why I put it on a plate rather than in a box. So, grab a seat and I can bring you over some water,” Peeta thought it was kind of silly that she asked if she could sit down. He would never tell her no about something like that and there was a playful smile on his face as he answered her.
Sharon grinned brightly. “Aww, thanks, Peeta.” She said. Peeta was simply the best. Sharon and moved over to sit down at the table to enjoy her pie. Actually, she was going to take her time. Savor every bite.
