Who: Meetra and Roland
What: Quite possible a genuine date
When: Backdated to Friday evening. Because I suck.
Where: Places. For dates
Status: In Progress
Rating: PG-13 most likely

Meetra had dressed up. As in she'd put on a real dress, with real shoes. She'd actually gone shopping for this, which was a rarity for her. She'd decided..well she wasn't sure what she'd decided, only that she really wanted to see Roland before she left for London and the idea of a date was both nervewracking and exciting. It had been years after all.

At night, Roland wondered when he would dream again. Part of him wished that it would return, but most nights were dreamless, just like before. He supposed this was for the best. Since Meetra had come into his life by way of an invisible string that had seemingly bound the two of the forcibly together, everything felt entirely different, including the dream whenever he had it.

Dates were not something that Roland 'did'. He'd never been on one, not in all of his thirty years, and perhaps we ought to say thank ya for it, and perhaps we ought to curse everything for it. Either way, Roland Deschain, son of Steven and Gabriel Deschain, did not know what he was doing. It may have been a woman's habit to go through three or four outfits before deciding upon one, but Roland did the same before deciding on his usual jeans and button down shirt that made him look more spaghetti Western than gentleman.

Roland knocked at her door and checked his belt for the umpteenth time.

There were times when Meetra's hand itched to close around a lightsaber, or she felt an emptiness at the missing weight from her hip. It was days like those when the dreams were strongest or most common. It had been this way the past few nights and she reached to check for it's presence, only to be disappointed again.

Ignoring that feeling, she opened the door, a smile passing over her lips at the sight of him. He looked..he looked like he was trying, and he was handsome and her feelings were conflicted enough that she didn't really care. It wasn't like she knew what she was doing either!

"Hello." That was a good start, and she put a hand on his arm, rather than wrap herself around him like her instincts wanted, "You look handsome, Roland."

She may not have wrapped herself around him, but he did it for her, his fingers gentle when they went around her wrist and guided her arm around his waist. His other hand cupped the back of her neck and he kissed her hello.

"And you look beautiful," he replied. Not because he was obligated to, but because it was the truth. She always did, but that hardly took away from the fact that she was beautiful just now, standing there, waiting for him to take her somewhere that was not either of their homes.

For a moment, Meetra was inclined to forget her own name. After the kiss left her a little breathless, she stroked fingers gently down his cheek, "Only because I wanted to be for you."

It was corny, and a little stupid to her ears but it was sincere. He had such a way of muddling her mind.

Rare as smiles were for Roland, he seemed to do it a lot around Meetra, as he did just then. He was fairly certain that Meetra was beautiful despite his being around, but he imagined that she might put a little more effort into it when she knew she was meeting him. "Are you ready?" he asked.

The smiles were beautiful in their own way, Meetra thought. She held out her hand to take is, "I'm ready, Roland." There seemed to be more behind her words than just what she was actually saying, though it wasn't consciously.

If there was more, Roland did not catch it. One of his faults was not having very much imagination and not being able to catch on when there was more emotion behind something someone said than was intended. So Roland only nodded and led Meetra to his truck, helping her up into her seat. When she was fastened in, Roland went to the driver's side and slid behind the wheel to turn on the engine. He did not buckle himself in. "Is there somewhere you'd like to go?" he asked.

"I hadn't really thought that far ahead," She replied, giving him a self-deprecating smile. "Some place to eat, but we don't have to be fancy about it." Then after..well she had some ideas for after and it didn't actually revolve entirely around sleeping with him.

At a red light, Roland leaned over the console and nuzzled the tip of his nose against Meetra's warm cheek. Strange, he reflected, how little he knew of her, and yet he knew just where to take her. He was a man who knew very little about actual dating, but he could sometimes have a shockingly romantic streak.

"Okay," he answered, straightening again when the light turned green. He drove to a spot on the edge of a mountain where there was a small trailer. that was serving steak and chicken burritos on the road side.

Warmth flooded through Meetra when he nuzzled her, "You're the sweetest man."

She'd never had steak and chicken burritos by the road side, but right now? It felt oddly romantic.

Gods, if she'd only known, she would say no such thing. If Roland himself had known, he would know just why the statement from her made him feel so uneasy. Roland might not have been gifted with the touch, as he might later come to call it, but he had good intuition, which he felt and subsequently ignored just then.

He parked the truck and went to her side to help her down. The view was of the city lights, tucked between the mountains. To Roland, it always looked like a movie from up high.

Intuition was something Meetra was gifted with herself, but if Roland was uneasy, she simply dismissed it as jitters. She stepped out of the car and took in the view, "It's beautiful."

She shifted back, so she was leaning against him. It was comforting.

Instinctively, his arm went around her. He shut the door to the truck and watched as she observed the spot they were at. "Best spot in the county," he replied, but they had to turn away from it to actually get to the taco/burrito stand.

To Roland, the place smelled Heavenly, like beef, pork, chicken, grilled onions, and spices. For himself, Roland ordered a double steak burrito. There were other items on the menu, of course, like popkins sandwiches. Roland wasn't much of one for those most of the time as mayonnaise resembled come to him. "Whatever you'd like," Roland told Meetra.

Maybe not heavenly, but Meetra didn't mind. She'd eaten at places that looked even more unassuming but had tasted divine. Appearances could be decieving.

One would never expect a woman like her to be such a skilled fencer, or possess the abilities she kept secret from Roland.

Really, when could she possibly show or tell him, 'Hullo, I'm a Jedi.'

"Chicken sounds good," She said, squeezing his hand.

Roland ordered a chicken burrito for her, and sodas for the both of them, paid, took his change, then turned back to Meetra as the meat sizzled on the griddle in the trailer. The aroma was strong and made Roland's mouth spring forth water.

This was what people did on dates, right? They ate. They talked. Roland was not a man of very many words, that was the only trouble. He searched, but only came up with, "Have you had anymore dreams lately?"

"A few," She said, cautiously. They were always so strange, and left her with unanswered questions. The smell of the food was distracting her as she tried to think of the best way to put them to words. How to describe one's convictions being on trial?

Especially to a man she was more than just physically interested in, she was starting to admit to herself.

"I haven't," Roland admitted. If there was any emotion behind it, no one would have seen it, but Roland wanted them to return. If nothing else, for his own sanity, to know who he'd been in some other realm. It was mad to think that he might have been somewhere else in another life, but he needed to know.

Roland looked to Meetra instead. She'd had a few, maybe more than she'd had before. "I'd like to hear about them," he finally prompted as their burritos were wrapped in foil and slid toward them in large heaps of tortilla, meat, and vegetables.

Meetra took the opportunity to keep her mouth busy with food as she thought about how best to approach this. Dishonesty wouldn't do.

Swallowing, she started, "Well, I don't recall if I've actually said, but I'm a warrior there. In one dream I'm on trial for disobeying a council edict, and following a great man into a war to save the whole galaxy. I fully believed in my actions, and in that man. For my part I was exiled."

With his warm dinner in hand, Roland led her to a table and sat down so they could spread out their burritos. Roland didn't always have company for dinner, so conversation wasn't something he was used to, and even though he didn't react with any expression to what she'd said, he did let out a sound as if he were going to say something.

Remembering himself, he swallowed his bite and chased it down with a few swallows of his Pepsi. "You were exiled for wanting to save the galaxy?" he asked, then shook his head. "Who would want to destroy it in the first place?"

"They were....I actually don't remember. I knew in my dreams but...Anyway they'd invaded the republic...sort of like the United States of Space, I guess. Spanned most of the galaxy. It was no contest - the Republic hadn't been challenged in decades and was still recovering from a devestating war. I...we were soldiers, peace keepers. We didn't report to the senate. Our role was supposed to be a pacifist one and our council decided that we shouldn't get involved."

She paused to collect her thoughts, and to take a bite of the burrito. When her mouth was clear, she continued, "Revan disagreed. He thought this was our role, and convinced hundreds of us to join him. I ...don't remember most of the battles. Just the end of the last battle. I triggered some kind of super weapon. It stopped them. Killed thousands on both sides and ended the war. Nearly killed me, except I managed to cut myself off from the Force before the feedback took me out."

Someone else might not have been able to follow along, but Roland had always had a gift for it, and perhaps that was why he'd been so good at developing strategies whilst in the military. Roland ate at his own burrito, but he didn't taste it. Another couple drove up, but they were far enough that they didn't hear Meetra talk.

"Gods," Roland breathed, and his expression did change as he marveled over how calm she was describing it all. Thousands, she'd said. She'd killed thousands, even of her own. Roland was at a loss of what to say. She must have been different in that world.

Meetra looked down at her food, having suddenly lost her appetite. She felt she needed to elaborate on a few things.

"In that..world. There's something that binds all living things together. It's called the Force. With it I can do amazing things. During that battle, when I activated the device.. I had no idea what it would actually do. None of us did. All those deaths...the feedback through the force could have killed me, except I was able to sever my connection." She glanced up at Roland, "It's a bit like cutting off both your arms and your nose, then ripping out your eyes for good measure. Everything feels dull."

It was remarkable that she could talk about this so calmly, but she'd had the dream enough that she'd had to separate herself from the feelings.

Or maybe that was a product of the training she remembered, "This force has two sides. Dark and light. Down the dark side lays the path of anger, fear, vengeance. Negative emotions. The light side is peace, tranquility. While compassion is encouraged, it must be selfless. There's no room for selfish feelings, wants or desires. Desires lead to selfishness, which can lead to anger or fear. Or worse."

All of it felt almost familiar to Roland, the Dark and the light, the battles, and mostly, death. None of it should have been believable, it was only a dream after all, but Roland believed it as if it were happening now and they just couldn't see it.

The only part he did not understand -

"How could there be no negativity?" he wondered aloud. "Without the dark, there is no light." It would be impossible.

"The Force is about balance," She awknowledged. "You must find the balance within yourself. And there must be balance externally as well. Light side users versus those who have fallen. I..don't know why, but I do know I was rebuilding the order. Like we'd been wiped out. The dark overwhelming the light."

She shook her head, "Revan experienced both. He was one of us. He fell to the dark side after the war. Most of his followers did too. Except me. But he redeemed himself and returned to the light to save us all. I suppose...he'd be better equipped to understand the balance than I would be."

"What about now?" Roland asked.

He didn't know who Revan was and he didn't expect to meet him. All he cared about was sitting right across from him, her face illuminated by the lights from the valley and the dim purples and oranges that came off the trailer.

"Is the Force here?" he asked.

Control came and went. Sometime randomly. Sometimes when she really needed it. And with one exception it had always been weak. Meetra looked down at the table, closing her eyes. Trying to let it flow through her, "It's everywhere. If there's something alive, it's there. Even the planet is alive with the force."

Roland's drink wobbled.

Roland had seen a lot in his life time so far, especially in times of war. He'd seen death, dismemberment, he'd seen people get blown up, and any other horrible way imaginable there was to die. Or to live. Through it all, he'd seen a few miracles along the way, people who claimed to be healers who could heal a wound faster than any medication, if one could only believe.

But Roland never really believed in such magic. Once, he'd been shot and had a fever that none of the magic could touch. It was only medication that healed him, but he was never really sure what was real and what he'd imagined in his time. This...this he knew he was not imagining, and for as simple as it was, Roland startled, his hand flying to the cup to steady it. When he realized it was Meetra who did it, he could only stare at her, this woman who had come into his life, from somewhere he did not understand and could probably never fully understand. She was, even more so now, an enigma.

"I'm sorry," She said softly. "I can't do much more right now. I threw a large trash can once but that was a fluke."

She was genuinely disappointed in herself. She made a cup wobble. Ooh. Fantastic. Meetra sighed and sat back, clearly frustrated.

"I can't do it," Roland said pointedly.

It may have just been a wobbly cup, but Roland couldn't make a cup wobble unless he was touching it. He could shoot one and miss it, but the bullet would be so quick that the cup would just stay stock still.

"It pales in comparison to what I know I'm capable of, that's all. With the force it doesn't really matter how heavy or massive something is. All it takes is enough willpower and you can find a way." Theoretically, a powerful enough Jedi could move a battleship. She didn't think she had that kind of power - her gifts were more aligned with helping others come into themselves. Though she hadn't dreamed it yet, she'd redeemed more than one person who should have been irredeemable.
