Gwen put together an Easter Basket for her friend Hiccup. She knew he was in the dorms, and might not get to do a fun Easter thing. (Then again, maybe he was going to have a lovely Easter. Who knew?) Perhaps she was compensating, since Gwen wasn’t going to get to see her own family this year for Easter. In any case, she put together an adorable basket with assorted goodies (a couple of cheap video games, some candy, some dvds, and a couple books) and headed to his dorm to surprise him. She even grabbed a pair of bunny ears to wear along the way.
It was more about Pagan holidays in his house, but his parents were spiritual. It had been a long time since he had an actual Easter experience, so Gwen was going to give him a very exciting surprise. He was just hanging out in his dorm room at the moment finishing up a few things of homework when he heard someone come knocking on his door. He wasn’t expecting anyone, so his look was a face of confusion as he went to open the door. And then when his eyes took in Gwen and her bunny ears he let out a laugh, “Aren’t you just the cutest Easter Bunny I’ve ever seen.”
“Damn straight I am!” Gwen laughed, then held out the basket to him. “Happy Easter, Hic! I thought I’d come by and spread some Easter cheer. I remember what it was like to be in the dorms and not to get to go home for holidays so… ta da!” She grinned brightly. “And you should definitely share some of your jelly beans with me.”
“Oh, you can definitely have some of them. We’ll share all this candy,” Hiccup took the basket from her and looped an arm around for a hug, “Thank you so much, Gwen. This is really awesome of you to do this. Come on in. You’re a welcome distraction from my homework. We can gorge ourselves on candy for a while.”
Gwen beamed as she stepped forward and gave him a big hug. “You’re very welcome, of course! Spreading the Easter cheer.” She pulled back and nodded once. “Hey, I’d love that. I put some games and stuff in there, if you need more than just a candy break from homework.” She stepped in and glanced around the dorm. Funny that she’d woken up under the bed right in here.
That was such a strange time and it certainly set a precedence for things to come during his time in Orange County. Valar had definitely lived up to its weird reputation. He closed the door behind her and walked over to his futon before patting the spot next to him, “Alright, let’s see what all sorts of goodies you put into this basket. You’re totally spoiling me.”
Gwen moved over to the futon to sit down and help him sort through the things in the basket. “The best part? None of that crappy, plastic grass stuff. This stuff?” She nicked a piece of the thin, green, grass-like lining in the basket, “it’s edible. They make it out of like, potato starch, or something. Dissolves in water. Doesn’t taste great, but it’s better than cleaning the plastic shit up off the carpet for weeks.”
“Whaaaaaaaaat. I didn’t know they made edible Easter grass! That is so awesome,” he reached down to take a piece out and placed it on his tongue. She was right that it didn’t taste the best, but it wasn’t completely horrible, “But that is a way smarter idea than using the plastic stuff. I feel like you can never truly get rid of it.”
“Right??” Gwen grinned. She took a piece herself, and started to nibble. “The best news about this grass stuff is the whole batch has like, sixty calories. So it’s not too terrible.” She smirked. “Not like the jelly beans. Those are full of carbs.”
“And also full of sugar, which is just what this college student needs,” he grabbed some of the grass and then grabbed some jelly beans because sugar. He would always need lots of sugar if he was going to survive the rest of his first year, “So, what else ya up to?”
“Nothing much. Did you hear Michael’s song on the radio?” Gwen asked, brightening considerably at the mention of her boyfriend’s musical career. “They’ve been playing it a lot! The first single from his new album.”
“I haven’t been listening to the radio lately, but he’s playing on there? That is awesome!! I bet he’s absolutely loving every moment of it,” Hiccup was quite impressed that her boyfriend had managed to get on the radio. That was a huge step and hopefully his career would take off from there. Gwen definitely had the happy glow of a proud girlfriend.
“Yeah.” Gwen was grinning so brightly at the mention of Michael’s music that it hurt her cheeks a little. “I’m so proud. Everyone in my office is so sick of that song already.” She laughed. “I’m surprised I haven’t emailed you the link yet. I’ll have to do that now.” She said, and drew her phone from her pocket to send him the URL to the YouTube video. (She pretty much had it memorized now.)
“Thank you, I’ll give it a listen after you leave. You’re such an adorable girlfriend, look at you,” Hiccup playfully poked at her with a laugh as he munched on some grass and jelly beans. He hoped that Michael’s song was good because he didn’t want to Gwen otherwise, but he knew it totally would be.
Gwen laughed at the poke. She shrugged her shoulders, going a little pink and grinning sheepishly. “I try.” She admitted, beaming. Of course, she was proud of Michael either way. And she knew that not everyone liked the same kinds of music. But Michael’s song was actually getting really good reviews. Last she’d heard they were playing it all over the place on the radio. “You’ll have to ask Michael next time we’re together how the music thing is going.” Beat. “But don’t tell him I told you to ask.”
“I definitely will and your secret is safe with me. I think we’re due for a double date soon,” he always enjoyed being able to spend time doing something different with Astrid when it came to dates. Gwen and Michael were really nice to spend time with and he had enjoyed getting to know her boyfriend a little more, “Ugh, I really should get finished on this homework. Now you’ve distracted me with awesome stuff.”
“I think we are, too.” Gwen agreed with a nod and a smile. “It’d be good to get us all together for a fun time. Maybe we can go bowling or dancing or something fun.” She glanced at her phone to check the time. “I’m sorry.” Though she wasn’t, really. “But I’ll let you get back to work. Hopefully you’ve got enough time during Spring break to catch up with everything.” She climbed up from her seat to head to the door.
“I hope so. I’m just so ready for summer to come,” Hiccup admitted with a grin. He liked school, but he liked having a social life more. He got up when she did and helped walk her to the door, “And I’ll mention it to Astrid. I’m thinking bowling because I’m horrible at dancing. But, thank you again so much for stopping by and visiting. I really love the Easter basket. You are the coolest girl ever.” He gave her another smile as he reached out to give her a hug before she left.
