Rachel was at Shoegasm. It was amazing having Cindy back--Rach was just glad that she both kept the place open and kept it from falling apart in her boss’s absence. And, to top it all off, she was designing her own shoes and selling them in the store! She had a following on her fashion blog, and had quite a few etsy shoppers who were interested in her designs, too. Her next step was to talk to Cindy about taking Shoegasm to cyber space. She could design the website and everything. Rach had some skillz.
She was stocking shoes today, letting the other employees handle the customers and work the register. It was beautiful outside, and she wanted to go sit in the sunshine. But she had to work. Dang this having a job business. At least it kept her busy while Kev was at his own job all day.
It had been a while since Aramis had seen Rarity, or even Cindy for that matter, and he felt like maybe now was as good a time as any. Better than any, actually. His wedding invitations were officially printed and he wanted to hand out as many of them personally as possible. Wasn’t it funny how good friends were born out of such strange circumstances?
He walked inside and smiled brightly when he saw Rarity. “Perfect,” he announced. “Just the woman I wanted to see. How are you?”
“Oh my goodness, I was just thinking about you!” Rachel exclaimed, coming down off the small step stool she’d been climbing to put away the big boxes of boots. She reached both arms up to wrap them around her friend, giving him a big hug. “How are you, Aramis? I’ve missed you! Gosh, I haven’t seen you since the wedding?”
She hadn’t seen much of anyone since the wedding, really. It ate up so much of her time.
“I know. I apologize, it’s been a hectic last few weeks.” And so much in the way of weddings. He supposed it was the season for such things. He returned the hug, giving her a friendly kiss on the cheek. “I’ve been good, though. I can’t complain, in any case. And how are you? Things are going well, I hope?”
It was one of those French kiss-kiss type of deals. Rachel was more than willing to return it. Funny how being stuck together for what, a week? Made them the closest of friends. And no matter how much time passed, their friendship never suffered. She was glad to have him around, and even more glad that Kevin didn’t seem threatened by her friendship with a very attractive man. (He had no reason to be.)
“It’s quite all right. I should apologise, too, it’s been insane and I should have called or texted. Things are wonderful! I’ve started having shoes made to sell in the shop. Come look.” She looped her arm through his to lead him across the store. There was a section devoted to Rarity’s designs. They only had floor models so far, but could order the shoes from the maker in any size.
"What? That's fantastic!" Aramis happily followed her to look at the models. He picked them up and looked them over. "These are amazing. If I were a woman, I'd buy the whole collection." He paused a moment. "Have you ever thought of doing men's shoes? I know they're pretty basic, but. I'd commission two pairs from you if you ever did."
"Really?" She was honored and flattered that he liked them. "I haven't thought about men's shoes, but... hey, I'll make some designs and you can talk me what you think?" Rachel was more into women's fashions, but she made clothes for Kevin sometimes, so she was pretty aware of what worked and what didn't work.
"Well." He cleared his throat a bit and pulled out the crisp ivory envelope and handed it to her. "If it's not much of a time crunch, I'd maybe like them for this? I think it would be something to make such a sudden thing a bit more us. Porthos and I, I mean."
“Oooh, is this…??” Rachel accepted the envelope and opened it with careful, nimble fingers. She gave a little squeal. “Yes, of course! Don’t be silly, a time crunch.” She waved her hand, brushing that thought aside. “Of course we’ll be there! I’m honored to be invited!” And then there was another hug. A bigger, tighter, more excited one.
“Well, of course you’re invited. Don’t be ridiculous.” Aramis very happily returned the hug. It was still surreal, passing out wedding invitations. It was good to have such a fantastic response to it. “Porthos is a ridiculous clothes horse. I think he’d enjoy special made shoes for his wedding.”
“Oh, you have no idea. I will make you two the best shoes ever created. Not matching, but complementary. Black?” Rachel finally released him from the hug. Her enthusiastic display drew the attention of one of the other employees, but she didn’t pay him much attention. “I’m so excited! Now I have to design myself a dress, too!”
“Complimentary,” Aramis agreed. “I think black is the sleekest. I leave it entirely in your hands.” He laughed. “I’m glad. It’s not going to be a very big affair, but I think we’ll be happier being surrounded by our good friends and not a lot of fluff.”
“Good friends is the most important part. Good friends and family.” ...neither of which Rachel really had when she and Kevin officially got married. In Vegas. But they definitely had both at their year-later wedding ceremony! “Well, no, the most important part is that you’re vowing to a lifetime of commitment with the person you love and cherish the most in the world. Then comes the good friends and family.”
“Well. Yes. Getting married is the important part.” Aramis laughed again. “Honestly, I’d be happy eloping. But Porthos is - I guess it’s more for him. Don’t tell him I said that,” he added quickly. “I know he wants something proper. He’s never had a family or anything so I want him to have a day where he’s surrounded by it.”
Rachel waved a hand. His secret was safe with her. “That’s so sweet of you, Aramis.” She said, running a hand down his arm in a friendly way. He was so sweet! “You two are well on the way to being surrounded by family here, anyway. When’s Sharon due?”
Aramis blushed a bit, dismissively waving a hand. He didn’t think he was that sweet. He just thought Porthos deserved this sort of thing. “Oh, my God, we are, aren’t we? The end of July, which is why we’re having the wedding so soon. I thought she should be there. We just found out it’s going to be a girl, which I’m stupidly thrilled about.”
“Oh, yes, I imagine she’d want to be there.” Rachel grinned, her nose crinkled a bit as she did so. “I’m glad that you get along so well with her. I mean, I can’t imagine how awkward it would be if you didn’t.” Her eyes lit up a little. “A girl?? I have to go shopping!”
“I thank God for that every day, believe me. And for how fantastic Porthos has been about it. Really, I can’t imagine what I did to get so lucky in my life.” Her enthusiasm made Aramis grin, though. “I know. She’s going to be spoiled, I can already feel it.”
“I dunno what you did, but I wish I could find that wood to knock on it myself.” Rachel said, grinning brightly. “Maybe it has something to do with you, you know? Some sort of innate goodness within you.” She couldn’t help but bounce. “Yes, she is! Oh my goodness, I’m going to spoil her rotten myself, let alone what you all are going to do.” If Rach had anything to say about it, the little one would be wearing Vera Wang for her Christening.
“Let’s not get crazy,” he said, laughing. Aramis glanced around, then gave Rachel an amused smile. “I’m keeping you from your paying customers. I should probably go, anyway. I feel like I have about a million things to do. Can you give this to Cindy, though?” He handed her another invitation.
“I know you have a million things to do,” Rachel said, giving him a smile and a nod. “Of course I can! Not a problem. You go on now, organize flowers and catering and a dj or whatever else you’ve got to do. And call me if you need anything at all. I’ll have your shoes ready. And Porthos’, obviously.” She held up the invitation. “I’ll just go put this in the back. I’ll talk to you soon!”
