After Friday when he’d had to spend a couple of hours on the phone with various people from the city just to get his keys out of the sewer he’d accidentally dropped them in then the dreams he’d had Saturday night, Felix thought that he deserved the drinks he’d gone out for on Sunday, but unfortunately that meant that he deserved the hangover he had on Monday morning. Luckily, owning your own business meant that you could pawn things off on other people so he was able to play hooky and still be sure that everything got done that needed to. Any of the parties they were planning could be handled by the people who worked for him, so he could spend the day sleeping.
However, his sleep was disturbed by incessant knocking. If he hadn’t had the mother of all headaches, he might have ignored it, but he just wanted it to stop, “Would you stop with that bloody knocking already?” He called as he headed towards the door. Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath before opening it in an attempt to not go off on whoever was on the other side.
Sarah had spent what felt like years sorting out things so that she and Kira could move to the states. It had been a long time. But as soon as Felix had told her about his plans she’d begun working on her own. They’d been apart before and it hadn’t been good for either of them so she was determined it wouldn’t happen again. She needed her brother and Kira needed her Uncle and he needed them too. So she’d worked hard, studied hard and taken a number of exams in order to make sure her qualifications would transfer and then managed to land a job in the town Felix was currently living in.
She was damn proud of herself but right now she just wanted food and sleep. Their flight had been delayed at their connection point in New York and neither she nor Kira had been able to rest properly. Kira was ridiculously excited at the idea of seeing Uncle Felix. Smiling as she heard his voice she grinned down at her daughter, “Well if you answered the bloody door I wouldn’t have to keep knocking” she said as he opened it, “Hey Fe” she said at the same time Kira said, “Surprise”
Hearing Sarah’s voice on the other side, Felix furrowed his brow slightly. Was he dreaming again? Surely that wasn’t really Sarah on the other side. Opening it, he quirked a brow at her, “I’m sorry, but the Sarah Manning I know has refused to come out here for the last couple of years. So, you can’t possibly be her.” He was only able to keep a straight face for a moment as he saw Kira who proceeded to practically jump into his arms. It had been awhile since he had seen his niece and she had grown quite a bit since then.
“Ha ha” she said before smiling and hugging him as well, “It’s good to see you” she whispered to him. He looked good, if a little hungover but somehow that always looked good for Felix, he was lucky that way. “Uncle Felix I’m hungry” Kira said from the middle of the family cuddle sandwich.
As Sarah hugged him, he hugged her back, holding her tightly until Kira spoke up and he laughed, finally letting his foster sister go, “Well why doesn’t that surprise me? I’m sure your mother didn’t think to stop and eat before coming here.” Not that he blamed her. “Come on. We’ll see what I have.” He gestured for them to follow him into the kitchen.
“Nope. Our flight was delayed from the connection in New York so once we landed all I wanted to do was get here. I swear I could sleep for a week Fe” Sarah told him as she left their bags by the door before following him and Kira into the kitchen. She’d had chocolate bars in her bag but those were long gone.
“If you do sleep for a week just try not to snore. I don’t want to have to go buy earplugs.” Kira giggled as Felix teased Sarah while he went to the cabinet to see what he had in there. He hadn’t gone food shopping in a few days, so he didn’t expect there to be much, “Aha, who’s in the mood for mac and cheese?” It was quick and he was pretty sure he had enough milk.
“Ha, even earplugs wouldn’t save you” Sarah teased back, happy to see the bright smile and laughter coming from her daughter. “Mac and cheese sounds great right?” she said and Kira nodded, “It sounds proper American” her daughter said raising a chuckle from Sarah. “You’re right it does. Maybe Uncle Felix has turned American now huh? You think we will too?”
“Take that back. I have not turned American.” Felix said, throwing a nearby dishtowel at Sarah, “It’s either this or leftover take away and that’s been in there for a few days.” Felix ordered out often or had meals with the people he was planning parties for so his food shopping habits weren’t that great.
Sarah laughed as she caught the towel before it landed on her, “Okay, okay I’ll believe you for now. Between us I’m sure we can do better than take away” Sarah wasn’t the most amazing cook but she could get by. She needed to in order to make sure Kira ate well and healthily.
Setting the box of mac and cheese on the counter, Felix went to get a pan and filled it with water then placed it on the stove to boil before turning back to Sarah, “So, what are you going to be doing out here? I assume you have a plan?”
“Of course, don’t I always?” she grinned, “I’ve been working on getting the right qualifications to let me work as a counselor out here. That’s why we haven’t been to visit Fe, I’ve been working and saving and now we’re here”
"Well, it sounds like you've got everything sorted. Looked at any schools for Kira?" He wasn't really sure what schools were around or which were good considering he didn't have any kids of his own so he didn't need to worry about any of that.
“Yeah. Couple of possibilities. I’ve gotta ring and set up some meetings. Luckily we have time since Kira is ahead in pretty much everything” Not that Sarah didn’t think school was important but she wasn’t going to start panicking yet.
“Good. Wouldn’t want this one to fall behind.” Felix said, smirking as he pointed at Kira who giggled. “So, what’s Mrs. S gonna do without any of us over there? Was she inconsolable when you left? Or did she say, good riddance?” Part of Felix kind of hoped that Mrs. S would decide to follow Sarah out to Orange County now that they were both there, but at the same time, he didn’t think that she would.
“I think she was kind of happy to have some space to herself again” Sarah said, “She knew I wanted to come out here so it wasn’t a surprise” Mrs S had always seen them as a matched pair and in a lot of ways they were closer than actual siblings. “She’ll miss us soon but she’ll enjoy her freedom for a while I think”
“I bet she threw a party when you left,” Felix smirked as he poured the macaroni into the boiling water. “Honestly though, you’re right. She’s had the deal with us for a long time and now she finally gets some time to herself.” Sure, Felix and Sarah were adults and could take care of themselves, but Mrs. S had always been there for them, whatever they’d needed whenever they’d needed it regardless of their age.
"An all night rave" Sarah joked with an easy smile. "It's good. She can think about herself now. Do stuff she wants to do" They would always be grateful to her and even now they knew if they needed her she'd come but it was such a big thing to do. Fostering. And Felix and Sarah hadn't been the easiest kids to end up with.
“Speaking of all night raves,” Felix said as he stirred the macaroni, “You do realize that once you’re settled, you’re going to have to find a babysitter for the munchkin so that we can go out and celebrate.” That would be the only downside of Mrs. S not being around. No more built in babysitter for Kira. “I have to bring you to this one club, Always. I think you’d like it.”
Sarah nodded, “You know any reliable people? Or are you only friends with party people?” she asked him with a smile. Kira was a pretty good kid and Sarah hoped once she found a school that she’d find some good friends and Sarah could make contact with the parents. But until that happened she’d need to rely on people Felix knew. “Oh yeah? Sounds good. I could do with a night out”
“Actually, there is one woman who is a client.” Felix said, stirring the macaroni some more, “We’ve done parties for her daughter, who is a year older than Kira. She’s been coming to us for awhile. Could always talk to her.” At least until Kira started school and made friends whose houses she could sleep over at when he and Sarah wanted to go out.
“Yeah? That sounds good” Sarah said, “It’d be nice for Kira to make a new friend too” She’d been worried about taking Kira out of school and uprooting her but her daughter had been so sure she wanted to come here and be with her Uncle Felix, she’d spent more time reassuring Sarah than anything else.
“Great. I’ll call her up when I go in tomorrow. See if she’d like to set up a playdate.” Felix had never once used the word playdate and using it now felt strange, but he’d put a bit of an exaggeration on the word as he’d said it, because wasn’t that what all the wealthy people called it when their children hung out together? Satisfied that the macaroni was done, Felix got a strainer and dumped out the water before he started mixing the cheese mix into the macaroni.
“Thanks Fe” Sarah said, she’d be able to relax a little more knowing there was someone around who Kira could get along with at least until Sarah found a good school and she made some friends there. “So how is work going? Still arranging the best parties around?” she asked him, knowing there was not really any doubt about that.
“Of course I am,” Sure there were other party planners in the area, but over the last few years, Felix’s little company had become quite popular and he even had quite a few celebrities who contacted him to plan parties. “I’ll have to plan a party for you.” Felix smiled as he finished mixing up the mac and cheese then divided it up into three bowls and brought Sarah and Kira’s to the table before getting his own, “All joking aside though, I’m glad you two are here.”
Sarah smiled, she knew of course how popular his company had become and was very proud of him. “I’d like a party” Kira piped up as she thanked her uncle for the food blowing on it before taking a bite.
“I’m glad too” Sarah said wrapping her arm around his waist in a little hug before he sat down, “I’m just sorry it took me so long to sort it all out”
“Doesn’t matter how long it took. You’re here now.” Felix smiled as he glanced from Sarah to Kira, “And of course you’ll get a party.” Felix was going to enjoy having Sarah and Kira around.
