Jace and Clary had enjoyed the New Years party at the institute. They had been surrounded by friends and Jace’s family. Izzy and Alec were there, along with Magnus, and a few others from their world. They had also invited other friends for the huge event. Magnus had even decorated way up into the highest parts of the ceiling.
Throughout the night, the music played, and guests ate and drank their way into 2015. At midnight, there was a ball, dropping on top of the institute to signify the changing of the year. Jace pressed a kiss to his girlfriends lips, the first kiss of the year. He held her close, listening to the familiar hum of Auld Lang Syne. “Happy New Year. Out with the old, or in with the new or whatever.” His forehead pressed to hers as others carried on around them. “I think you should stay tonight.”
Clary was having a great time, chatting, dancing and eating with everyone. It was a great party and by the time midnight rolled around, she and Jace were wrapped around each other, enjoying their first kiss of the new year. With her arms wrapped around his neck and their foreheads pressed together, she grinned happily. “And why would you think that?” she teased. She enjoyed flirting with him so much, enjoyed knowing he wanted her.
He enjoyed holding her. When they were together, everything else that was going on in the room faded away, and he didn’t care. Clary was the only girl he noticed. “Because I do. I want you to keep me warm. It is January, you know. There was a nice snow storm going on.” He didn’t really care which reason she wanted to use, as long as she used one. “Say yes and we can sneak away.”
An excited tingle rushed over her at the proposition, but she was suddenly reminded of the last conversation she had had with Magnus. “Jace, wait,” Clary put her hand on his chest and dropped her gaze from his as she rubbed her thumb back and forth. “Can we talk? About...well, you know,” she gave a little shrug and blushed, hoping he would catch her meaning.
Jace had almost pulled away to take her hand when she asked him to talk. He paled just a little. Those kinds of conversations were never easy. He knew it was a little rude just wanting to get to the good stuff. “Sure, we can. What’s up?” He settle against her again, looking down. Her eyes were not on his, but he understood that, especially given the nature of that talk.
"I...I was talking with Magnus the other day and he said we should probably talk before we go any further," Clary told him, fingers playing with his shirt. "I guess...I mean I imagine you've been with girls before me, but...you're my first boyfriend in any way, shape or form. I just...I don't want you to be disappointed if it's not...perfect or anything," she gave him a little shrug, a blush rising on her cheeks as she spoke.
Jace swallowed, eyes wider. There were talks that were a little awkward, and then there were things like this. It shouldn’t be awkward, maybe, but it was. “I have - ,” he began nervously. “You aren’t going to disappoint me. It’s not really possible.” He didn’t expect her to be wild and crazy, and he liked that. “Believe me, I’m not comparing.” He bit his lip, trying to keep himself from blurting out anything worse than that.
He was quiet, taking a breath, trying to choose words carefully. Finally he looked back down at Clary. “I know that I am the first. I know that. I’ve waited - mostly because I didn’t want to disappoint you. The others weren’t even important.”
“You thought you’d disappoint me?” Clary asked, almost disbelievingly. She gave a little laugh and shook her head as she reached up to stroke his hair back from his face and gazed at him lovingly. “Why on earth would you think that? Out of the two of us, I’m the novice,” she said shyly.
Jace’s face was a little red. He looked down, leaning into the hand on his face. “Yeah, well. I want it to be right. I don’t want to hurt you, and I don’t want it to suck, and by the angel, I don’t want you asking me ‘Is that all?’” There was a nervous laugh as he chewed on his lip. “Believe me, a guy’s first time is not even sexy. It’s awkward, and then it’s over pretty quick. That is not really the impression I am going for.” He was pretty sure his face was a shade of purple that he didn’t want to see in the mirror ever.
Clary couldn’t help but grin as he rambled away. He was cute when he was like this. Playing with his hair, she bit her lip and stepped up close to him. “You do love me, right?” she asked
him.
“I do love you.” That was an easy answer. She needed something a little more, and it was the new year. He took a deep breath. “I have never told anyone else that I loved them, because I really didn’t. I did like them. You and I are different. That’s why I won’t be disappointed. It will be right.” He leaned down and kissed her before she had time to respond, hoping that would punctuate the words.
Clary knew Jace loved her and his words and actions only served to reinforce that knowledge within her heart and mind. She returned his kiss, sure of her own mind, but glad they’d had this talk. Pulling away just slightly, she smiled at him and took his hand. “Happy New Year Jace,” she grinned and started to lead him away from the party. This was going to be an outstanding start to the new year, she thought to herself.
“Happy New Year, Clary,” he began as she pulled away. She was moving them both out of the party. He didn’t need to ask where they were going. He wasn’t going to question what was okay. He was going to give her the best night he could. That was all he wanted to do. It was a new chapter in their lives. It was a big one. Welcome 2015.
