To say that Marguerite was relieved that the whole stalker business was behind her would be an understatement. The level of apprehension and fear were not something she wanted to deal with for any time longer. But, it was over and done and she could go back to her life. She didn’t have to look over her shoulder or worry that something would happen to those she cared for all because they associated with her.
For now, it was having lunch with Mary Margaret. True, they could talk at the shelter (another reason Marguerite was happy as she no longer felt a threat to the women and children there) it was better to do such things on their own time. Professionalism, things of that nature. For now, she had her salad and iced tea and was waiting.
Mary Margaret was also extremely happy that the stalker business was behind Marguerite and her brother. She had been extremely worried about them during it and was glad that they didn’t need to deal with that any longer. She was glad that they could once again see each other easier than before, which was one reason they were having lunch today. Mary Margaret, of course, was running a little late after an unexpected donation had come in. She’d had to hang around and take a quick inventory of the boxes that the woman had brought it to make sure they were suitable for the shelter and she had texted Marguerite to let her know.
Finally reaching the restaurant, Mary Margaret headed towards the table where she saw her friend sitting, “I’m so sorry I’m late. Were you waiting long?” As she sat down, a waitress came over to ask if she wanted something to drink and having been there before, Mary Margaret placed her lunch order at the same time so that they wouldn’t have to wait long for her to get her own food.
Ah, there was Mary Margaret. Smiling as she apologised for being late, the actress shook her head and waved off the question.
“Not at all, things come up.”
Especially at the shelter with donations and having to make sure things would work. Marguerite well understood that and so she had been content to sit and wait. It was nice to people watch and not worry that she was being watched without realising it. It was one thing to be on stage and performing, it was another to know that there was someone watching, and thinking god knew what.
“How have you been?”
Because shelter talk was usually left for the shelter and busy schedules.
“I’ve been alright.” She had been lonely since David had left, but Mary Margaret had understood that he’d had to go home to New York. It sucked that in her dreams they were so happy, but there was nothing she could do about it but hope that he came back someday. She was curious if he continued to dream though. “Not too much has changed in the last couple of weeks really. What about you? You must feel like a weight has been lifted.”
Marguerite really didn’t know how she would react if Percy left. While she was always about just living in the moment and enjoying what she had, it would be strange now that she’d been with him both here and in the dreams. Still, it was good that Mary Margaret was doing okay and nothing of consequence had seemed to happen.
“That’s good. And I really do. Part of me feels bad that I wish it had been Chauvelin, but it would have been two birds in that instance.” With a shrug, Marguerite sipped her iced tea, “C’est la vie.”
“Well I’m just glad that you don’t have to worry about that anymore,” Mary Margaret said as her food arrived. “So, what are you going to do now? Do you have another show to prepare for?” Mary Margaret had gone to a few of Marguerite’s performances and she thought that her friend was extremely talented.
She couldn’t win them all. And really, it was more just that Marguerite would feel better once she knew what was going on with Chauvelin. In a way, this whole thing had reminded her about how things had ended with that. But onto better topics of conversation, like upcoming shows!
“I am! All female production of Macbeth, as the title role.”
“Wow. Congratulations. That sounds extremely interesting.” Mary Margaret took a sip of her drink, “I’ll definitely have to see that. Are the characters all female or simply played by women?” She was curious about this production now.
“It really is. Clarice has been reworking it so that it works. All of the characters are female though.” Which really was something else and Marguerite loved it. She loved the twist on it and she loved how it brought new meaning to everything. Of course, Marguerite just loved performing in general and always lit up when discussing it, so really, it wasn’t that shocking.
“I’m looking forward to seeing how it works.” Mary Margaret hadn’t been to the theater as much as she had in the last few months since Marguerite had started working at the shelter, because before the redhead and Ruby had started working there, Mary Margaret had taken almost all the responsibilities on herself and rarely left herself enough time to do anything she wanted to or enjoyed. So she was extremely grateful to the both of them, because she had been able to let go a little and wasn’t as worried about giving up certain responsibilities to others as she had been before.
“It’s going to be amazing from what we’ve done, I can promise you that.” Marguerite was always positive about the work she did. True, part of that was just having to believe in the work you did, but she had a good feeling about all of this. And she was always happy to know that she was helping Mary Margaret. There was a good thing going with the setup currently. And now she was able to help out more since she no longer was worrying about an irate stalker who could cause harm to those seeking help. That had been one of the most upsetting parts to Marguerite. The anger focused at Percy and the fact that this person had known where she went to work and could hurt the women and children at the shelter. Her own safety? Marguerite hadn’t worried about, it was just everyone elses that had been her concern.
“You know, I admire you for being able to get up there and do what you do,” Mary Margaret wasn’t exactly shy, but she couldn’t picture herself up in front of all those people. She’d be far too nervous. “And I really believe that you’re going places. It’s just sad that when you get to Broadway, I won’t be able to come out and see all of your shows.”
“I do what I love, that’s how I look at it. I don’t think about it, really.” Marguerite was always at home when she was on stage. It was a part of her, and the fact that she was an actress in her dreams as well? “You and Armand both. Though I’ll be sure to find a way for you to come out. Broadway runs do tend to be longer than the three weekends I get while here.” Marguerite did have her ear out for potential chances in New York, but she enjoyed her life in Orange County as well, being able to help Mary Margaret at the shelter. She had a life here now so depending on certain factors.
“Whatever happens will do so for a reason, for all of us.”
It did make Mary Margaret sad to think that there might come a day when she wouldn’t be able to see Marguerite almost daily, but she knew that whatever happened, they’d still stay in touch. There was no way that she could imagine that they would ever lose contact completely. “I’ll definitely want to see you on Broadway when it happens. I’ll hitchhike to New York if I have to.” Okay, so maybe she wouldn’t actually do something quite so dangerous, but she meant it to mean that she’d do anything to continue to see her friend’s shows even if they weren’t nearby.
No matter where she was, Marguerite would make sure to keep in touch with people. She had done her best to stay in touch with Monty and he had been in a different country for the longest of times. So she knew that, no matter what, this friendship would last.
“Nothing so dangerous! But if you should find yourself in New York and I am there, I will get you tickets. And a place to stay.” Because staying in New York could be expensive if you didn’t know people or ways to find cheaper accommodations. Not that Marguerite had any plans in that moment to leave, nor did she plan hypotheticals given her perchance to live in the moment. Even so, the offer would be there. Just in case.
