Anna was thrilled to get to spend some time with Rose. The girls should check in, right? Be friendly? Their boyfriends were both good friends, and Anna wanted to make sure she and Rose got along. For the ease of double-dating.
She headed to the cafe to order a hot chocolate and a chocolate croissant--warmed. She’d had enough of ice and cold lately. Then she moved over to a table near the window and settled down to study, waiting for Rose. Anna still didn’t have a new phone.
Rose hadn’t expected Anna to contact her to hang out, but she certainly wasn’t upset about it. It would be nice to have another girlfriend to hang out with and she was sure that Tom would appreciate it for future double dates. She made her way into the coffee shop and scouted the area quickly for the tiny redhead. Anna was easy to spot and she wandered over, “Hey! Just wanted to let you know I’m here. I’m gonna go grab a drink and I’ll be back.”
“Okay!” Anna said, brightening up a bit at the appearance of her friend Rose. “I’ll be right here.” She closed the book she’d been reading and highlighting, and started putting things away in her bag. Rose would probably want some table space for putting down her coffee cup once she got it. And a plate if she was having a snack, too.
A snack actually sounded fantastic and when Rose got to the register she eyed the pastry case. She ended up getting a lemon poppyseed muffin and ordered a large mint white chocolate mocha. She had a bit of a sweet tooth right now and that sounded absolutely perfect even if it was kind of warm outside. She stepped to the side and quickly checked her phone as she waited for her order. Once her name was called she grabbed the items and made her way back to Anna, “Hey, hi, how are you?”
“Hey,” Anna said, brightening a bit when Rose came to join her. She finished clearing up the table and had her snack and drink in front of her. Along with the disposable phone she’d picked up to get her through finals. Trying to figure out what kind of phone she was going to get to replace the one that was now at the bottom of the bay was something that would have to wait until after finals. She wanted to keep up her winning streak of 4.0’s during each quarter. “Good. Studying for finals, it’s eating my life. How are you?”
“Oh god, I don’t miss finals at all,” Rose commented with a bit of disgust at finals in her voice. She unwrapped her muffin and broke it apart before popping the first bite in her mouth. She certainly didn’t miss finals and homework and even though she wished she was doing more with her degree she wouldn’t go back anytime soon. She did have pity for other college students though and her heart went out to Anna, “But you’ll be quite happy when things are finally over.”
Anna chuckled softly. “I think finals are the thing I’ll miss least when it comes to school. I’ve got a long way to go, though.” She had a lot of school left. Several years. “It’s going to be good when it’s over, though, because my friend Caroline and I are talking about going on a road trip over spring break. And I’m sure I’ll spend some time with Hans, too.”
“Oh that sounds like fun! I think Lissa and I are going to go down to Mexico during her spring break. I’m so ready to get away and go relax on a beach or something. And I would hope you would spend some time with Hans, he kind of likes you,” Rose couldn’t help but tease a little, with a smile, as she popped another piece of muffin into her mouth.
“That sounds like a ton of fun, too!” Anna said, then blushed a bit. “Well, I more than kinda like him, too.” She admitted. Though, it was something they both knew already anyway. “I mean, I love him. Is it… it’s weird, right? That we’ve both proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to one another that we’re each other’s true love? That’s not a normal thing. Is it?”
“Why would that be weird? The age difference or just suddenly being in love? It’s really not that weird. If you feel like he is your happily-ever-after then you should just embrace that. And if he doesn’t end up being that then don’t be worried. You may fall in love multiple times, but I think you and Hans seem like the real deal,” Rose commented with a grin as she took a sip of her drink.
“No, the… proof. Normal people don’t have that kind of proof. Do they?” Anna asked, sheepishly. “He saved my life, you know. My heart was frozen. And I saved his--another freezing curse. We both proved it.” She was never going to love anyone the way she loved Hans, she knew it. “That’s weird, right?”
“Proof that you love each other? You don’t need to prove to anyone how you feel about someone else. That is all in your heart and no one else’s business,” Rose pointed out to her. It was really only in stories and movies that people needed to prove their love to the world, “It’s not weird. But you don’t need to explain yourself. I love Tom and we certainly haven’t saved each other from death. He just -- he just makes me happy and that’s all I need.”
Stories, movies, and Orange County. Because of the strangeness. They’d proved it with acts of true love. A kiss. Standing up to worst fears. It meant that Hans and Anna were linked together, perfectly, effectively, forever linked to one another. “I’m happy that you and Tom are a thing. I mean, before he was with you, he was… well, less fun to be around.”
“In what way?” Rose certainly knew that Tom was a bit of a womanizer, but she was somewhat surprised to hear that he wasn’t as much fun to be around. Certainly people found that side of Tom to be fun otherwise he would never have made friends or gotten laid. And she could certainly see Anna disapproving of that kind of lifestyle, the girl was much more prim and proper than Tom was.
“I don’t know. The way he looked at people? At me? It made me a little uncomfortable.” Anna had been really sheltered. The way Tom looked at women--like he was hungry starving and they were a perfectly cooked steak--made her uneasy. Even though the only times she’d met him she’d been with Hans, and Hans was plainly protective of his girl, it still made her feel weird that he would look at so many people like they were a meal waiting to be devoured.
“But since you’ve been together it’s different. He’s a different man.” Anna added quickly.
Rose couldn’t help but blush because she knew what Anna was getting at. It was quite common to see that kind of look on men like Tom. And knowing now that he was different made her really realize that he was truly in love with her. That he wasn’t like the guy in his dreams and if only he could realize that as well, “Well, I’m really glad I’ve helped him change for the better.”
Anna nodded, smiling brightly. She was about to say something else when her phone chirped at her. “Oh, I forgot, I’ve got a study group before my next class,” Anna said, apologetically, once she’d glanced at the screen of her cell. “I’m afraid I have to cut this short. But let’s hang out again, okay? Soon. I want to go get mani pedis. You want to do that sometime?”
“Oh no worries. Your finals are way more important than hanging out with me. You need to pass,” Rose waved away Anna’s worries with her hand and smiled, “But mani pedis sound fantastic actually. I haven’t gotten that done in forever, so I’m totally up for that as our next girl time.”
“Good! I love this idea.” Anna was thrilled that she and Rose were becoming good friends. After all, she and Hans were in it for the long haul--as she assumed Tom and Rose were. And if they were going to be godparents to each other’s children, they should probably make friends now. “I’ll text you.” Anna climbed up from her seat, rushed a quick, one-armed hug to Rose, then turned to head out of the shop.
Rose would probably freak out if she could read Anna’s thoughts and heard ideas about godparents and children. Rose had a lot more things on her bucket list to do before she even thought about things like that. But her thoughts were cleared away when she got the hug from Anna, “Perfect. Looking forward to it. Good luck with studying.”
