Michael didn’t have any clue how he’d gotten talked into making a corned beef dinner for St. Patrick’s day but he was going to give it his best shot. The deep fried turkey at Thanksgiving had turned out okay after all. They hadn’t even set anything on fire making it. He just needed to follow the recipe he’d found online and it wasn’t like he was in the kitchen by himself making the entire meal. Gwen was helping with the sides and everything. It was nice getting to work in the kitchen with her and just have this time with her - it felt like they’d been doing this forever. And not in a bad way - just in that way that felt comfortable and like how everything was supposed to be. “So I think I’m just about ready to put this thing on to cook,” he told her with a smile. “I still make no promises that this will actually turn out edible.”

“Well, we’ve got several hours to wait,” Gwen said. It took like, three hours to cook corned beef. Just boiling the meat forever until it fell apart, pretty much. She had all of her side dishes ready, but they took less time. It was going to be a lot of figuring out the timing to try and make this all work out.
Because who wanted overcooked potatoes or undercooked meat?
“If it’s gross, we’ll just order a pizza.” She grinned, wiping her hands on a towel and turning to face him. “Thank you for this.”

Michael grinned back at her as he put the lid on the pot he was using for the corned beef. “Since we have so much time, and no clue when anyone’s going to be back, what do you feel like doing? It’s been awhile since we watched a movie that wasn’t animated.” He’d suggest they try to take advantage of having the house to themselves since it didn’t happen often but they were cooking. And their roommates could be back anytime within the next hour or so.
“And you’re welcome. I just hope it’s not completely disgusting. And if it is...there’s that new pizza place we’ve been talking about trying right?” And they could probably feed the meat to the dog. Beef was okay for dogs and this way they wouldn’t be wasting it. He didn’t think he’d used any seasonings or anything that would hurt him. Another thing he was going to have to research.

"I dunno. Whatever you wanna do." Gwen had turned off her phone. (Well, figuratively. It was plugged in in their bedroom on the nightstand, but she was ignoring it.) She was all his. "We could watch a movie, or play some video games, or fool around..." That last suggestion was Gwen only half kidding. "We could go sit outside in the sunshine for a while. It's a beautiful day."
Pizza would work, too. "Do you think they have corned beef pizza?" Gwen asked, grinning.

Michael gave her a quick wink at her last suggestion. “Let’s hold on to that one for later. We don’t want anybody messing with dinner until it’s done. And if we leave it completely unattended…” he said, teasing a little about their roommates. It was a problem sometimes - people grabbing stuff that was supposed to be for dinner before it was all ready. He figured that was a problem in any roommate situation. He thought for a minute. “It would be a shame to spend all day inside wouldn’t it? Especially when we’ve got the beach right there,” he told her. “I don’t think we take advantage of that anywhere near enough.”
“Well they said something about specialty pizza toppings so they might. If we end up going the pizza route and they do have corned beef pizza - we’re getting a pepperoni just to be on the safe side.” He went over to the fridge and pulled out two beers, holding one out to her in a wordless question to find out if she wanted one.

Gwen chuckled softly. “You’re right. Don’t want to lose our dinner.” Especially if it came out perfectly. Miraculously? Gwen wanted to enjoy the fruits of her labors, not just provide a good meal to the other housemates. She reached forward and accepted the beer.
“Thanks. And yes, Pepperoni is a good idea. Fall bac, just in case corned beef pizza is as disgusting as our worst imaginings make it.” She opened the beer, then slipped her hand into his so they could go for a walk along the beach. A short one. They wanted to stay close just in case.

Michael was never going to get tired of hearing her laugh, he was sure of it. “Especially not when we worked so hard on it.” He wasn’t teasing about that - they had worked hard making dinner tonight and for all their joking and teasing about whether it would be edible or not he was confident it was going to turn out okay. He’d found a recipe by Alton Brown, and he’d had really good luck with following recipes by him the last few times he’d actually tried to cook anything. And this one had been rated easy on the website so he was optimistic.
“And if they have it and it tastes good we’re pleasantly surprised,” he opened his beer and took a sip as they made their way out towards the beach. This might be his favorite thing about the house Sam had left him here - how close they were to the ocean. He waited until the dog was through the door to close it behind, glad that the obedience training had taken effect at least enough that the dog would stay close to them whenever anybody took him out.
“So...how crazy have you driven your coworkers with the song?” he asked her as they started walking down the beach.
