Ever since Tony, in his truth induced state, had mentioned a Hawaii secret Pepper had been distracted with thoughts of what he could be planning. Of course she knew what she hoped it was but that was a surefire way to get her hopes up and have them dashed. So she’d text Rachel and asked to meet up for a coffee and to unload her burden with her friend.
Entering the coffee shop she looked around and when she didn’t see Rachel she moved to stand in the small queue.
Rachel was in the bathroom. She’d had to pee really, really bad, so when she arrived she dashed straight to the potty. She did her business, washed her hands, then came back out into the lobby and saw Pepper in line. Rachel wandered casually over to her friend, grinning. “Howdy stranger! How’re you?”
“Hey you” Pepper said embracing her friend, “You sneaky thing” she added with a grin as she realised where Rachel must have been when she came in, “I’m good, you?” she asked moving them forward in the line.
Rachel laughed. “Sneaky is the girl who has to pee.” She teased, returning the hug. “I’m really good. I’m selling my shoes at Shoegasm! My own designs! It’s pretty exciting.” She moved forward with Pepper in line. “What about you? What’s new?”
“That is ridiculously exciting. I need to stop by and place my order hmm?” Pepper said, wondering if perhaps Rachel could design an Iron Man inspired pair - that would surprise Tony. “Well, a couple of interesting things came to light during the truth spell thing that people got hit with. One of those being Tony” she said pointedly.
“Of course you do! I have one of every pair in your size, but if you want something different, you just let me know. I know you’re a bit of a fashion icon over there at Stark. I bet half the company would come and buy some if they saw you wearing them.” Rachel grinned. “Oh? Do tell.” She had her own news about her conversation with Kevin about his Dreams, but she wanted to hear Tony’s truth-telling stuff first.
“Oh you are a star. You know I adore shoes and I have no doubt yours will be wonderful. I have an idea. I’ll let you know soon. And thank you, I try to uphold a good image” it was important for the company after all and it made Pepper feel good too. “Well, this is no surprise I’m sure but he’s trying to turn his assistant Stiles into a mini Tony and I don’t think it’ll be all that hard. But he also mentioned something about a surprise trip to Hawaii” she said, biting her lip, “I’m trying not to get my hopes up but do you think...he might ask me?”
“What’s a mini Tony?” Rachel asked, then then gasped. “OhmyGod,Pepper. Of Course he’s going to ask you!” She gave a squee and jumped up and down twice in her excitement. “Oh my God!!” Rachel was convinced that’s what Tony was up to. It didn’t really take a rocket scientist, right? Surprise trip to Hawaii?
“His protege” Pepper explained before laughing at her friends reaction, “It’s really hard not to get my hopes up with you bouncing around you know” she said but couldn’t help the smile spreading across her face. “But you obviously think I’m right” she added with more hope in her voice.
Rachel was way more interested in the Hawaii trip than whoever it was Tony wanted for a mini-me. She laughed. “Sorry! I just… Hawaii! That’s so exciting!” She tried her best to not bounce, not squee any more. “I absolutely think you’re right. Has he taken you to look at rings or asked you about jewelry or anything?”
"Hawaii is exciting" Pepper agreed even if it was just a trip away it was incredible. She shook her head, "Nothing like that at all. Not one word since that little reveal" which is why the doubt was creeping in.
“You don’t think he’s changed his mind, do you?” Rach asked, frowning. But then it was their turn to order, so she stepped up to the register. “Grande Skinny Vanilla Latte, please.” She said, and drew out her credit card to pay for both of their coffees.
“The same please” Pepper said to the barista, before looking at Rachel, “I don’t know. Maybe. Perhaps he realised he’s not ready?” She voiced the concern which had been running through her head.
“He’s ready. You’re both ready. It’s the perfect time.” Rachel responded. “I just… I think you’re worried when you shouldn’t be. Just go along for the ride if you can.” Rachel paid for their coffees and took Pepper over to the counter where the barista would pass them over.
“I’ll try but you know me. My brain likes to overthink things far too much to leave me in peace. You’d think it would have learnt after dealing with Tony for so long” she joked with a wry smile.
“Your brain overworks. Maybe you should have an Irish Coffee instead of a skinny, vanilla latte.” Rach teased. “I’m surprised you haven’t gone mad already, after how many years working for Tony?”
“More than I care to think about” Pepper replied with a slight eye roll, “But there isn’t enough alcohol in the world that could switch my brain off where Tony is concerned” she added.
“Well, I suppose that’s a good thing?” Rach said. “I mean, you don’t want to be stupid about him. He’s your boss and your boyfriend, and he’s supposed to make you crazy, right?”
“Right” Pepper said, “And he definitely does that. But I wouldn’t have it any other way” Not that she’d ever confess that to Tony of course.
“I bet he wouldn’t, either.” Rachel said. “SO.” She picked up her coffee from the pick-up bar. “When are you going to Hawaii? Do we get to go shopping??”
“I don’t know when. He mentioned it when he couldn’t lie but I stopped him saying anything else. But we could go shopping since it could be anytime he springs it on me”
“Yes.” Rachel was nearly vibrating with excitement. “A surprise trip to Hawaii with a proposal means we get you a whole new wardrobe for the occasion.”
“I’d say that’s not necessary but you know what why not?” Pepper said throwing caution to the wind for once, “I need a few knockout outfits ready and waiting”
Rachel laughed giddily. “It’s a plan. When do you want to go shopping? We can go whenever.”
“This weekend? Are you free or working?” Pepper asked her, wanting to go soon in case Tony suddenly sprang something on her.
“I’m free this weekend. Let’s do it.” Rachel said, beaming, and lifted her coffee cup for a toast.
