Who: Lucy and Christine
When: Mid March
Where: Coffee shop
What: Advertising
Rating/Warnings: Low/None
Status: Complete
Lucy had just grabbed a coffee and was now checking her phone, she was due to start work in the next couple of days and was really looking forward to it. She had been starting to feel like she’d never find something and while Harry’s severance pay was very generous she needed to do something.
As she left the coffee shop she noticed a young girl putting up a poster in the window, “Oh, is that a concert? I’m afraid I don’t recognise the name” she asked as she moved closer.
With the performance weekend slowly creeping up on them, and Christine nearing the end of her dreams, it almost felt as if a chapter were closing. Not necessarily a bad thing and if she managed to survive the three performances of Carmina Burana, then perhaps she would start singing again. As much as she had avoided it, she had also missed it. Something she hadn’t realised the extent of until she had started singing again.
That afternoon she was putting up posters as it seemed everyone, in the choir, the orchestra and the soloists, had been given some. The plan for after putting up posters was lunch. But then she heard someone ask a question and move towards her. Blinking, the blonde smiled some and nodded.
“It is.” She wasn’t terribly shocked the young woman didn’t recognise the name. O Fortuna was really the piece everyone knew from it, “It’s a cantata, so there will be an orchestra, choir and soloists if that’s the sort of music you’re interested in.”
Lucy smiled, “My music taste is rather eclectic, I’ve never really seen the point in limiting what you’ll listen to you know?” she said, if you liked it you liked it. Did it matter if it was pop, classical or rap? “So are you a musician or a singer?” she asked curiously, the girl was definitely pretty and Lucy may have even guessed she was a dancer had she just seen her walking on the street.
“I do.” While Christine mostly stuck to anything that didn’t have lyrics because of her own issues, she was branching out of that. But even strictly instrumental music had a wide variety from which to choose, so it wasn’t as if she was lacking in music. “A singer, I’m actually the soprano soloist in this.” Saying as such caused her to flush, even though she was used to that idea now that she’d had a few months. She was still shy, so the fact she was a soloist when she’d just auditioned for the chorus? It was still enough to make her flush.
“Oh that’s wonderful. Well now I simply have to come and listen” Lucy told her with a friendly smile, “I’ll see if I can bring along a few friends too. I think it’d be a nice evening” Lucy liked music and this girl seemed sweet so she wouldn’t mind seeing her on stage. She seemed dedicated to be putting up posters and Lucy respected that.
Even though she should have expected such a response if only because of being polite, Christine still blushed more and smiled as she folded her hair behind her ear. Nervous habit. But still, it was nice to know there would be people interested in showing up. Usually it seemed to be a matter of interest in the style or it was for extra credit.
“Thank you. But it does promise to be. The orchestra, choir and other soloists are all very talented.”
Lucy had heard that a lot of performers were shy and this girl certainly seemed to be by the way she blushed. That was kind of cool, much better than having a massive ego in Lucy’s opinion. “Then I’m already looking forward to it” she said honestly, “I’ll send out a message to my friends so don’t be surprised to see me” she grinned.
The idea of performers being shy always seemed to go off type as it took a certain type to be able to put themselves in front of an audience. Add in the general stereotypes of the soprano divas, it was always difficult to say.
“You’re really kind.” And then she realised that she had never mentioned her name. Shuffling the posters, she held her hand out with a small smile, “I’m Christine.” The brunette did look vaguely familiar, probably a customer from work, or the network, but it was hard to tell.
“I’m Lucy” she replied taking the other woman’s hand, “Pleased to meet you Christine” Unlike her new friend Lucy didn’t recognise her but was glad she’d spoken to her. “Thanks for letting me interrupt you” she added with a grin.
Despite the fact Christine didn’t use the network much, she had a tendency to recognise faces. If it came from work, or more of a survival instinct following her dreams, who could be sure. “Likewise. And of course. It was nice being able to talk to some.”
“I’ll see you at the show” Lucy said with a smile before heading out of the door, pleased she had been in the coffee shop at the right time.
