What: Preparing for a talk
Rating/Warnings: Low/None
Status: Complete
Athos had been asked to escort the woman who was coming in to talk to the teams about human trafficking to the room she would be in so she could set up whatever she needed to. It gave him a nice break from his paperwork for a few minutes and he had to admit the subject was an interesting one. He’d been to one before on a similar topic while he worked for the CIA but that was a while ago and obviously in a different location.
Heading down to reception he waited for her to arrive.
A year in California, and Svetlana still wasn’t used to the heat. Not only that, but with recent developments in congress and the use of trafficking victims as political pawns, Svetlana really wasn’t in the best of moods. However, she was good at keeping her emotions in check. It had been a busy week already, and she nearly forgot which agency she was doing a presentation for and had to double back to her apartment to get the proper materials.
But she was there now, still a bit early but not as early as she might have already been. Giving her name at the desk, the Russian woman was directed to where Athos was and she gave a small nod of greeting.
Athos was impressed with her timeliness, used to speakers being late. Nodding in response he offered a small smile, “Miss Krylova? My name is Athos, I’ve been asked to escort you to the room you’ll be speaking in. Can I help you with anything?” he offered, willing to carry her things for her if she needed him to.
Svetlana always tried to be on top of things and so being early was one of them. That and sometimes when dealing with public transportation and walking, one had to allow that time.
“Yes, it is nice to meet you, Athos. Thank you.” As for the question, she shook her head. As for now she had everything she would need. Unless the room was fitted for someone taller than her, she figured she would be fine. “I think I have it for now.”
“Of course” he said, “If you’ll please follow me” he added before leading the way to the room she had been placed in. “We have refreshments being brought in before the start so everybody can be settled by the time you’re ready to begin. The room has been laid out theatre style but if you’d prefer something different please say so and I’ll have it rearranged”
Shifting her bag to the other arm, Svetlana followed after Athos, absently making note of exits and paths. More habit than anything else, nodding some as he told her the initial plan. Refreshments at the start tended to work best she had found in the presentations she had given. Less movement and distraction.
“Theatre style is fine. There is a projector I imagine?” That was the tricky part, and those tended to be placed in different spots of a conference room, depending. The ones on low ceilings were especially irksome, though they were easily figured out once on.
“There is and I can adjust it if you need me too once you’ve set up and tested it. It should be aimed well at the screen but we can check” Athos said, knowing from experience how annoying they could be. “Here we are” he said opening the door and letting her pass to enter the room.
“Thank you.” There had been plenty of times where a projector was meant to be aimed accurately and then for whatever reason wasn’t, so she was thankful for the offer. Stepping into the room, the Russian woman looked around to get a feel for the space. That was also important to know in these situations. As much as she kept to herself, she at least managed to not close off in these situations. Preparation most likely.
Nodding mostly to herself, Svetlana moved to the podium to put her notes before she went to check the projector. Which of course was off some. Most likely it got bumped at some point. That tended to be the usual culprit in projectors being off centre when they were meant to be set accurately.
Athos moved to the side of the room out of her way while she went about setting up. He was rather good at being unobtrusive but then he’d had good training. When she checked the projector he moved forward to adjust it for her, “I should have known it would make a liar out of me” he joked lightly as he made sure it now aimed where it should.
And suddenly Athos was there again. Being unobtrusive was similar to both her brother Mikhail as well as Erik. Dmitri on the other hand. Whatever the case, she at least wasn’t startled by it, and instead just smiled some as he made the comment about the projector making a liar out of him.
“It is my experience they enjoy being difficult.” She could fall into light joking territory, it was simply a matter of rapport as well as situation.
Athos nodded, “I should be used to dealing with difficult things but I find people easier than technology” he admitted, stepping back but waiting for her approval of the position of the projector before he moved away entirely.
“In their own way. I am better at reading people than technology.” Then again, being a naturally guarded person did tend to lead to that assessment. Still, it did seem that Athos had gotten the projector centred correctly. Which really seemed to be the only issue that had come up in the setup process. “Thank you, that looks perfect.”
“Excellent. Then I’m going to go and make sure everything else is on time and that people know they’re due to attend. If you need anything else there will be people milling around outside, just ask one of them” Athos told her giving her a nod before leaving the room.
