Envy had been thinking about staking out Ed’s school since he moved to Orange County, though he had managed to resist. As much as he didn’t want to admit it, there were more important things than meeting the boy who had ruined his life, like finding a job and settling in. But once all of that was taken care of, he went and stood outside the school, far enough away to not draw attention, but close enough that he’d hopefully be able to see the boy leaving. Envy’s mother had all sorts of information about Ed and his younger brother, including relatively recent photos and information about what schools they went to. How she got this information, Envy had no idea, but he wasn’t about to ask.
Ed had been out of school for a couple days, so he was staying a bit later to get caught up. Damn homeworks, damn flus and basically damn high school. Those were the current things running through his brain when he finally got to leave. He was short tempered that day, but dressed in a red trench coat. It really wasn’t going to be hard to pick him out of a crowd. He hadn’t taken that coat off except to let Riza wash it now and then since he’d gotten it.
He was carrying a stack of books, both school related and not on his way out. Half of them fell from his arms and he was forced to stop to get them with a cranky scowl. He knelt down to pick up the stack, this really wasn’t helping him to leave school any faster..

The boy in that hideous red jacket looked enough like their father that Envy was fairly sure that it was Edward, but he double checked the photo just to make sure. Envy himself was wearing an adorable skirt and halter top, but he supposed he couldn’t be surprised that the boy had horrible fashion sense. He didn’t remember much of his father, but he had seen a lot of photos, and the man hadn’t had much style either.
Envy walked over to wear Ed was, and when he dropped the books, Envy burst out laughing. He made no move to help, but watched as Ed picked them up.
The blond went to reach for the books and raised an eyebrow at nearby laughter. “The hells so funny?” Was he really losing his shit over fallen books? Maybe this guy was crazy and weird. He was wearing a dress after all. Ed really couldn’t take the laughter in his direction very seriously upon noting that.

"Well, that terrible jacket, for one," Envy said. "And your clumsiness for another."
He looked Ed over, now that he was closer. "And, well, I never really expected my little brother to be quite so little. You really don't have much going for you, do you?"
“I’m getting fashion advice from a dude in a skirt.” Ed stated with a roll of golden eyes as he picked up the book stack and stood to look him over. “Yeah, that one stings.” He bit back sarcastically as he folded his arms in a moody sort of manner. He was about to comment on the other important remark in that statement, but all he could think about was the little part. “Who the hell are you calling so short he can barely be seen with a fucking microscope?!” It was like something had short circuited in his brain just then. Who the hell was this guy to be making that kind of remark? “Wait. What?”
"I'll have you know this skirt is very cute," Envy said cheerfully. When Ed went into his rant, he grinned wider.
"I don't see anyone else here," he said. "I see your temper is nearly as short as you are." He ignored the boys other question - if he didn't catch it the first time, that was just his own fault.
“For girls.” Ed said with a shrug and narrowed his eyes on the new guy. “Yeah, I get it. Wouldn’t see me since I’m so short you couldn’t distinguish me from all the grains of sand. Hilarious.” This was not helping his mood.
“Oh, that’s good,” Envy drawled. The fact that Edward was doing most of his work for him amused him greatly. “So, tell me, Edward, how did you end up so short? Was your mother stunted, or did you just draw the short straw when it came to genetics?”
And there it was, a fist aimed directly at Envy’s face. Fortunately for him he’d decided to be a little nice and use the one not made of metal. Though in all honesty his using it was just a fluke in this fit of rage. The mother comment was what got him.
Envy sidestepped away from the fist easily enough. Well, that was an interesting reaction. Envy filed it away for future reference, and was pleased that he was able to get under the boys skin just as much as Ed got under his skin. He stepped toward Ed, aiming a fist for the boys solar plexus, glad for the excuse to throw a punch.
Ed grabbed at his fist. This time with his automail hand and grunted in annoyance. He didn't have time to move but he wasn’t going to get hit either. Being held by automail was like being stopped by a freight train it was so heavy. Though it was concealed by the coat, it went unseen. But definitely not unfelt. Ed didn’t actually want to crush this new guys hand, though after that remarks it was nearly impossible to stop himself so he jumped back. Golden eyes narrowed on the guy. "You've got the wrong guy. Leave me alone. "
Ouch. Envy moved to pull back his hand, to shake the pain out of it. He certainly hadn’t expected to feel like he had punched a concrete wall.
“The wrong guy, hm?” he asked, trying not to let any of the pain he felt seep into his voice. He had years of training as an actor, so he was almost successful. “So, you’re not Edward Elric? You look just like him. It’s uncanny.”
Ed wasn’t really sure what he was supposed to think about this, other than the guy had taken the block from his automail rather well. Maybe he shouldn’t have reacted so poorly like that, but he couldn’t help it. The mother topic was what had truly gotten him.
“I am..but I only have one brother, and you’re not him.”

Envy feigned shock. “You mean, dear old dad didn’t tell his favourite sons about little old me?” He actually was a little bit pissed that it turned out that he hadn’t even gotten so much as a mention, but he wasn’t entirely surprised.
“Favorite sons?” Ed raised a blond eyebrow as a look of disgust crossed his face. “My father if that’s what you want to call him ditched us the first opportunity he got. I’ve not seen the old man until recently.” Ed hated his father. It was his fault he and Al were apart to begin with. “He wants nothing to do with me..and that’s just fine. Maybe you should go chat him up instead.” Narrowed eyes steadied on the other boy.
Envy frowned. His mother hadn't ever told him that his father had left Edward and Alphonse as well. "He... Left you?" Envy asked. "But he's still around, right?" He had had ideas about first meeting his brothers, and then meeting his father. What he would do upon seeing his father for the first time in twenty years was something he hadn't quite figured out yet, but he had assumed something would come to him when he did. He hadn't planned on the possibility that he had left his new family too.
"Yeah he did. So before you go around throwing phrases out like that you might wanna think twice. " He glared. "Oh yeah. He's back and keeping me from Al. If I ever see that asshole again..." well he hadn’t quite planned out what he'd do. Their supposed father was a lot of the reason for many of Edwards current issues. For all he cared that man could just jump off a cliff.
Envy eyed Edward, considering him in a slightly different light. His mother had told him all sorts of things about the boy, and about how his old man had left him in order to raise his new family, but this had clearly proven to be untrue. He had spent the majority of his life hating Edward and Alphonse, but… “Well, it seems we have more in common than I thought, Short Stuff.”
"I don't even think that jackass knows when my birthday is. That's how fatherly he is." ED made a face, this day was turning into a piece of shit. And here he thought it had started out lousy, now he left it with a bad taste in his mouth. "I am not short." He glowered, a foot stomping for emphasis. "If this trip down memory lane is done, can you get out of my way now?" Ed didn't know how to receive another brother. He'd spent his entire life thinking Al was his only one.
Envy stepped aside so Edward could pass. He had a lot to process too; he had been expecting to go from his loving brotherly meeting straight to their father, but that apparently wasn't going to happen. He was also fairly sure he was going to need to put an ice pack on his hand. He hoped it wouldn't bruise. Bruises were so ugly.
"We'll be in touch, little brother," Envy said. More specifically, Envy would be in touch. He had no intention of giving Edward any way of contacting him.
