Rose couldn’t help but remember when she had offered to Tom the opportunity to spend some of Christmas when her and Lissa up in Tahoe and he had run the other way. Oh, how the tables had turned. They had declared themselves an actual couple and Tom had decided that they needed a weekend away to celebrate that little fact. Apparently Tom had never had a serious girlfriend before because he was being a little cheesy with stuff like this, but Rose was not going to complain in the slightest.
With a loud grunt she finished zipping up her overfilled suitcase. Yes, she was the typical girl who completely overpacked, but she wasn’t quite sure what they were going to be doing on this weekend until she got in the car. So, she made sure to cover all her essentials and that left her with one bulging suitcase, but at least she fit it all into one! She picked it up off the floor and rolled it out to the front door. As she waited for Tom to show up she went into the kitchen to grab a few snacks.
Tom had never had a girlfriend before. He’d never wanted one before. He’d never been exclusive, and he’d absolutely never told anyone (besides immediate family) that he loved them before. But the tables had, indeed, turned. He was more than content to be with Rose alone, to only want to sleep with her, only want to hold her and be with her. He actually never wanted to leave her side.
This was the honeymoon phase for sure.
Tom had packed lightly. His suitcase was in the trunk of his car, and he had a matching laptop bag, just in case something weird came up with work. He wasn’t expecting it to, though. He wanted to focus on Rose for the entire extended weekend.
When he made it to her front door he pushed his sunglasses up into his hair and rang the bell. Then he waited for her to answer.
With a piece of string cheese in her mouth she went to the door and opened it up. She grinned around the piece of food and stepped back to let him inside, “Hey there, handsome. Are you ever going to tell me what we’re doing this weekend?” She honestly didn’t mind that he wasn’t telling her, but she was going to go crazy if she didn’t find out soon. And she didn’t want to die before finding out what was going on.
She bit down on the string cheese and pulled the end away from her lips so she could get up on her tiptoes to give him a kiss in greeting. She wasn’t going to allow some food to stop that from happening, “Mmm, lemme grab a couple more snacks and we can head out of here. My suitcase is ready to go and I am totally ready to go.” She gestured to her suitcase by the door before rushing off to grab the bag of snacks she had put together.
“When we get there.” Tom said. He stepped through the doorway, then leaned over to steal a kiss from her. “I’ll put your stuff in the car.” She was practically stronger than he was, and could likely carry the thing one handed… but he was chivalrous. Don’t ever let it be said that he wasn’t.
It only took a minute to get the suitcase into the trunk, then he was ushering her out and into the car on her side. “...what sort of snacks did you pack?” He asked. Actually, he was starving.
It was nice to be around someone who knew that she was strong and could handle herself, but also knew what being a gentleman was. It wasn’t smothering and she appreciated him doing things like that. She wasn’t going to argue with him on those points and attempt to question his manhood because they were pretty fluid on things like that in their relationship so far.
“Um, I got some trail mix, protein bars, a bag of chips, and some apples,” Rose commented as she held up the Target bag filled with food. Those were just the things she could find before he was ushering her out of the apartment, “Are you hungry?” She could definitely hand out something to eat or else they could pick something up on the way.
"Starving. Let's bust open those chips." He climbed into his seat and started the car. Music came on, was whatever top 40 station played locally. He pulled away from the curb. "We've got reservations for dinner, so let's not ruin our appetites completely."
“How long is the drive?” She questioned as she set the bag down at her feet and then grabbed the chips out of it. She opened it up and set it in the middle console between the two of them before grabbing a handful for herself, “And you know I can eat, so you don’t have to worry about me ruining my appetite. And -- oh! I love this song!” Currently playing was “Sugar” by Maroon 5, which always reminded her of Tom and she reached forward to turn it up slightly and began to groove along with it.
“An hour or so.” Tom said, pulling onto the freeway. “Are you--” He couldn’t help but break into a grin when she reached forward to turn it up and started to dance. The grin spread to a laugh. “You’re adorable.”
She couldn’t help but grin as she bopped along with the music and took a bite of a chip, “I know. But this is a good song. It makes me think of you when I hear it.” Yeah, maybe she shouldn’t have told him that, but she certainly did think it everytime she heard it. And it was on the radio a lot. That’s when you knew you were in that dopey love phase when you associated songs with people.
“Yeah?” Tom asked, then reached for a handful of chips, too. “You think of me when you hear it, huh?” He asked, smirking. “Well, it’s a good thing they play it pretty much nonstop on the radio lately.”
“I shouldn’t have told you because now you’re going to be all goofy about it,” she playfully threw a chip at him before turning the music down when the song was over, “But yes, it is a good thing they play it a lot. And if you tell me that you haven’t heard a song on the radio that reminds you of me then I will be crushed.”
Goofy. It was like a private joke that Rose wasn’t in on. Tom laughed. “I might have to sing it to you.” He said. And Tom had the voice for it. “Every love song I hear on the radio reminds me of you,” he offered up genuinely. That was mostly true.
“I would never object to you singing to me. It’s better than me attempting that,” she had sung a few times around him, but her voice really wasn’t that great. He and his friends had much better voices than she did and she kept her singing to a minimum. But when he said all the love songs reminded him of her she blushed a little and grinned, “Oh hush, you’re just being a dork now.”
"Actually it's true. Especially that one that goes 'take me to church,' he said. Then he started to sing, "I'll worship like a dog at shrine of your life, I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife." of course, he had no idea if he was getting the words right. That's what it sounded like on the radio.
“You could probably make some money off that voice of yours,” Rose pointed with a grin. She loved listening to him sing and although she knew he wasn’t the type to release a cd or anything, but he could still do something fun with it. At least she knew that singing along to the radio on this trip wasn’t going to be horrible because she would keep her singing low and he would drown her out.
Tom chuckled. “I make enough money as it is.” He reached over to take hold of her hand now that he’d satisfied his chip craving. They drove for a while, singing along to the radio, until it probably became glaringly obvious where they were going. Straight to Disneyland.
Rose had let her mind wander as they drove along. It was just so perfect and relaxing to spend time with him in the car. They didn’t bicker about silly things and she didn’t try to back seat drive him, so it was one of the better car rides she had been on (don’t get her started on car rides with her mother). But her mind came back to reality when she noticed where they were and signs advertising Disney and her eyes lit up, “Are you taking me to Disneyland?!”
Tom grinned. “That’s the plan. That’s not a problem for you, is it?” He asked, turning to look at her, almost concerned as he pulled off the freeway and onto the side streets. He had reservations at the Disneyland Hotel, so that’s where they were headed.
“Yes, I absolutely hate fun,” Rose deadpanned before reaching over to playfully smack his shoulder and leaned over to give him a kiss on the cheek, “I’m so excited. I’ve been meaning to get up here and I haven’t had anytime at all. You’re the best.” There was a small part of her that was incredibly giddy and she knew it would probably come out the moment they got into the park.
“I thought we could try it out and if we like it, just get a couple of year long passes. Come out here whenever we want to get away from the crazy.” Tom grinned at the kiss to his cheek. He was relieved that he’d planned something she liked. He wasn’t always in tune with Rose’s wants and needs. He pulled off the main drag and drove around to the parking lot behind the hotel. They had a valet. He handed over the keys as the bellhop pulled their bags from the trunk.
“Year long passes. Hopefully we get our own because I totally plan on breaking up with you in like a couple months,” she couldn’t help but tease him a little. Planning even a year into the future with Tom was quite interesting and new territory for her, “And is Disneyland really a place to get away from the crazy? Could be just as crazy here, but with pretty princesses.” She did love the idea of having a place to run away with him when she wanted to and she hoped this trip would be as enjoyable as she hoped. After exiting the car she slipped her hand into his as they made their way into the hotel.
“Hey, a year long pass is worth the money. So I hear.” He gave her a grin. “I’ll just charge you for yours if you break up with me in a couple months.” He squeezed her hand. “I like the pretty princesses.” He gave her a wink. “Especially Cinderella.” That was… he probably shouldn’t have kidded about that. But he was kidding.
A few minutes later they were up in their hotel room checking things out. It was a really nice room, and they had a fantastic view for the fireworks.
It took her by surprised because the moment he mentioned Cinderella she was reminded about his Dreams and that he does actually end up marrying that particular princess. Granted, it wasn’t the Disney fairytale version, but it was still a strange thing to think about. But it didn’t bother her to think about it because she had her own love life in her Dreams, but she was with him in this world. This was the only one that mattered.
“You are such a weirdo and you’re going to make me take a photo of you with her, aren’t you?” She smiled up at him as they walked. The hotel room was beautiful, but she couldn’t wait to get to the parks. She turned back to him, “So, we going to head over there? You can just walk to the park from here, that’s awesome.”
Tom laughed. “Yes.” He said, nodding. “You’ll definitely be taking a picture of me and Cinderella.” He brought their suitcases into the room to set them up so they’d have easy access later. “Yeah, we can go on over. Grab a jacket. It’ll be cold.” He was planning on hanging out in the park until it closed at midnight.
She went over to her suitcase and grabbed out the light jacket she had packed. Granted she had to leave her suitcase open since it was so packed full, but she managed to find it. After slipping it on she walked over to Tom and wrapped her arms around his neck, “Hey. Thank you for bringing me here. It’s really sweet of you and I’m excited to spend the weekend with you. I love you.” It was getting easier and easier to say that now that they had that talk and she liked to make sure that he knew how she felt constantly. But she was so grateful to have such a caring boyfriend who planned things like this.
Tom wrapped his arms down and around her, pulling her gently against his chest. He stole a kiss. “I love you, too.” He said, hands wandering up and down her back in a hungry way. Down to her backside for a squeeze. “And you’re welcome. I can’t wait to cuddle with you on Pirates of the Caribbean.”
The squeeze earned a squeak and then a giggle. She hadn’t been expecting that although she really should since it was Tom. She stole a kiss back from him, “And you can cuddle with me on whatever ride allows that. I do not recommend trying to cuddle with me on a roller coaster. Now, let’s get going before I decide that we need to stay in for a while and test the mattress.”
Tom chuckled. He stole one more kiss before taking her hand in his, threading their fingers together, and leading her out of the room. He wasn't planning on releasing her hand. Not until it was absolutely necessary.
She tossed her purse onto her free shoulder as they made their way out of the hotel. Everything seemed a little more magical as they made their way over to the park. It was like being a kid in a candy store and she hoped that they would be able to have an amazing time. They had the whole weekend to play, “Oh, by the way, I am so getting a picture with Prince Charming if he’s there. So you better watch out because I seem to have a thing for princes.”
Tom grinned. "Hey, I'll fight him for your attention." He teased. Of course, she had about as much luck with a Prince charming in the park as he had with a Cinderella. But he would. He wasn't above smacking some poof in a Prince Charming costume in the nose if he got too handsy.
They showed their tickets and headed in through the front gate. "Where to first?" He was grinning. Disneyland was so magical.
“Of course you will,” Rose teased with a laugh as she thought about the idea of Tom getting grumpy over Prince Charming. Tom had nothing to worry about because she would definitely be going home with him at the end of the night. Well….unless Charming was very convincing but she doubted he would be, “And um, I’m not sure. To the castle? Let’s get some photos in front of that. Otherwise I have no idea what to go to, so you get to be the tour guide.”
Tom slipped his hand back into hers. It wasn’t all that busy, which was kind of a blessing. He wanted to make sure they had a calm trip, nothing too frantic. No people shoving or two hour wait times for rides. “Castle it is. I figured you’d want to get some magical selfies.” He said, and they started off down Main Street.
“I haven’t been here since Eddie and I were kids,” Tom confessed. “Or, teenagers, I suppose. I hear it’s all been updated in the last decade.”
“Oh don’t worry, we will be taking a lot of selfies. And we will make people take cute photos of us as well,” Rose was kind of excited to actually have some photos of her and Tom that she could put into a frame and put on her phone so she can show people. Oh yes, she was going to be that kind of girlfriend, “And you haven’t been here in that long? Shame shame. And speaking of Eddie, I still want to meet him and have him meet Lissa.”
As they made their way to the castle she saw a group of people standing off to the side and realized they must be lined up to meet a character. And good fortune had it that it happened to Cinderella and her prince! Rose laughed as she tugged on Tom’s arm to lead him over to the line.
Oh, right. They were going to do something all together, weren’t they? That actually sounded like fun, even if Eddie thought that Tom was off his rocker. Maybe Tom was. He gave her hand a squeeze as they walked down Main Street. They had to move out of the way for the trolley as it was pulled down the street.
“Wait what?” He asked, and turned away from the horse to look where Rose was pulling him. He laughed out loud when he realized it was Cinderella and Prince Charming. “Oh, man. I’m not sure I’m ready for this,” he added, feigning nerves as they stepped into the line.
“You’re nervous?” Rose was surprised by that, but she had a grin on her face anyway. Oh my goodness, this was absolutely hilarious. She couldn’t help but giggle as she reached up to fix his hair a little bit, “You’re such a weirdo. You wanted to do this and we’re going to get our pictures taken. There is nothing to be nervous about. You look fantastic, like usual. Just take a deep breath.” It wasn’t often that she got to see Tom be nervous about anything and she was surprised it took a fake Cinderella to make it happen.
Tom was playfully nervous. He wasn’t really nervous. This wasn’t the Cinderella from his dreams. It was just some woman--a very pretty woman--wearing a costume and acting the part. Tom chuckled when she fussed with his hair. “It’s okay. I’ll be okay. You sure I look good enough for your pictures?” He added, and drew out his phone to snap one of her with Prince Charming.
“Yes, you always look good enough to be in photos with me,” she stood up on her tiptoes to give him a kiss after she said that and then they were up to the front of the line. She handed over her phone to the photographer to snap a couple photos with as well. She couldn’t help but pose playfully with the Prince Charming who kept giving her winks as they took photos. Once they were done she slipped her hand back into Tom’s as they walked away and she went through her phone to look at the photos, “I should use hashtag I only date Princes or something stupid like that.”
Tom absolutely flirted with the Cinderella. And noticed that the Prince Charming was flirting back with Rose. He released her hand and wrapped his arm down and around her as they walked away, pocketing his phone, too. "I think Prince Charming would have agreed to a threesome with us." Beat. "If you asked."
The mention of that certainly caused a blush to appear on her cheeks, “Oh my god. Tom! There are children present and that’s not something I would have asked for.” Oh god, was he suggesting a threesome? What in the world had she even gotten herself into. Her face was one of confusion and surprised as she looked up at him after putting her phone away.
Tom laughed. He tightened his arm around her. "I was kidding." Tom was definitely not interested in a threesome. Especially not with another dude. He didn't want to share Rose with anyone. "Don't be silly. Cmon, let's go get a picture in front of the castle."
"You are going to be the death of me," she lamented she followed along to the castle. This was going to be an incredible weekend and she couldn't wait to tell Lissa about it when she got back. Who could ask for anything more? She had an actual prince for a boyfriend who was treating her like a princess and she was at the happiest place on Earth. Sometimes Rose just had to give into her girly side as she snapped photos of them kissing in front of the castle.
Tom worked hard to be the perfect blend between gentleman and … hornball. He wanted to touch her the whole time they were there. A hand in hers or resting against the small of her back, possibly running over her backside. When they sat side by side his hand was on her thigh. He didn’t push it so far that it was overt or sleezy. He just… couldn’t get enough of her.
They went on a couple of rides, then Tom led the way over to the Blue Bayou Restaurant in New Orleans Square. They had reservations--and the best view of the night-time show Fantasmic. Tom let Rose pick her chair. He was planning on moving his around the table to squeeze up next to her.
The touching was definitely encouraged and Rose spent a lot of the time snuggled up against him as they walked around and rode some of the rides. It was kind of freeing to act like an actual couple because it had been a very long time since that happened to her. And Tom was certainly the best person ever to experience that with because she got to act scandalized and he would just continue on with a grin on his face.
The dinner reservation was only slightly unexpected because she knew he had been planning all of this, but the restaurant was beautiful. She really loved how it looked and it was even better that they got a view of the fireworks. Her hands slipped onto his thigh when he moved his chair closer and she leaned over to kiss his cheek, “This is amazing, thank you for planning it.”
“Hey, no problem.” Tom lifted his arm to drape around her shoulders, tugging her close up against him as they watched the show. “I hope you’re hungry. The food here is amazing.”
The dinner was amazing, just like he said, and she was quite full as they snuggled up against each other and enjoyed the fireworks. It would be amazing if every single night could be like this, but that would be a total fantasy. And she knew that, despite their dreams, they would probably get bored of this real fast. But for the weekend she was going to embrace every single lovestruck thing they could possibly do. Once the firework show was over she stayed close to his side as they exited the park and made their way back to the hotel room, “You are raising the bar high on magical trips, by the way. You won’t be able to top this for a while.”
It was funny how the park closing made everyone funnel toward the exit. The walk that might have taken fifteen minutes any other time of day became a half hour trek at midnight. (Funny. Midnight. While they walked along, he leaned over and whispered in her ear for her not to leave any shoes behind.)
They made it back to the room and once inside, safe and private, he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close up against him. “Oh, I’m sure I’ll figure something out.” Then he kissed her. He kissed her with passion, with hunger. It was the kind of kiss one would never see in a Disney movie. He wanted to make sure to give her a night she’d never forget.
