Billy was excited, he and Kate had only done this a couple of times but they’d managed to stop a few bad things from happening. It was definitely addictive and he wondered if Teddy would feel the same. He was wearing normal clothes, he hadn’t quite gotten up to wearing the costume yet.
Stopping outside Teddy’s place he beeped once and waited. They would then go and get Kate before heading into town.
Teddy slid into the passenger seat of Billy’s car and rolled his eyes. “Really?”
"What?" Billy said as he pulled away to head towards Kate's place.
“Honking the horn? I have a phone,” Teddy said, dryly. “So. I wasn’t sure what I should bring, but extra clothes seemed...prudent.”
"Nobody is around," he said though actually he'd forgotten he could call. "Good idea," he said shooting him a bright smile quickly.
Teddy huffed a laugh. “Yeah, okay.” He also wasn’t sure what exactly they were doing, but he had to admit he was excited, and a little nervous. But mostly, excited to meet Kate, and excited to be doing...whatever this was...with Billy.
Billy was ridiculously excited, it helped him relax knowing they'd all be together like they were in the dreams. He hoped it would help sort his head out or at least focus him on the task at hand.
Arriving at Kate's they got out to go knock on the door.
If Kate had known that Billy honked for Teddy but actually came to the door for her, she would have felt special. She was pinning up her hair in the mirror hanging by the front door, and therefore able to answer right away. She pulled it open. “Ready? Oh, hey.” This must be Teddy.
Wait. A grin broke out across her face. “I know you. My Maypole from New Year’s Eve.”
Teddy laughed, recognizing her immediately. “Hey! I remember you!” He glanced at Billy and raised an eyebrow, because he had no idea how much Billy had told her. “I told her she reminded me of someone I knew. Doesn’t she remind you of someone we know?”
“Maypole? I think there’s a story there I need to hear,” Billy said, one eyebrow raising, “I’ve told her we become a team,” he informed Teddy, “But she hasn’t dreamed about us yet”
“Nah, I’m far from the Crazy Club.” Kate said. She grabbed her backpack, locked the door behind herself, and motioned for them to lead the way back to the car. She’d already discussed with Billy taking his car. Her place was too residential for there to be much crime-fighting. But it was a short drive to a more commercial area, where they could likely stop some muggings or would-be rapists or something. At the very least they could catch some vandals in action and confiscate their spraypaint.
“But the Maypole thing …we danced together on New Year’s Eve. I had no idea this was Teddy,” she added, moving with them back down the drive.
“Did I not introduce myself? My bad.” Teddy’s eyebrows raised as they headed back to the car, and he glanced at Billy, curious. “And what exactly has Billy told you about me?”
“So far,” Billy told her as they headed down the path to his car, “You’ll have the dreams eventually I’m telling you,” he smiled.
“Huh. Interesting,” he said, “Teddy, Kate. Kate, Teddy. And I’ve told her about us being a team and our unique abilities, though I was vague about yours,” he added with a small smile. He didn’t want Teddy thinking that he’d gone blabbing to everybody.
“It’s okay, Teddy,” Kate said, giving her Maypole a wink. “He only said good things.” She jogged forward to grab the shotgun seat. Right? Since Kate sat shotgun. That was one of her things. When she wasn’t driving, she liked being in the front. Mostly.
“So… any thoughts on tonight’s adventure before we take off?” Kate asked, grinning at her boys.
Teddy looked amused and surprised as Kate took shotgun--but he wasn’t a baby. He could totally sit in the back.
He moved to the far side of the car with Billy, and took the seat behind him. Because.
Billy looked at Teddy in the rearview mirror and grinned, “Stick together, be careful and save people?” he answered winking at her.
“Works for me. Don’t get in the way of my arrows, yeah?” Kate said, grinning as she settled in and pulled her seatbelt on. “But we’re good. Don’t do any of your magic stuff and ditch the muggle.” She gave Billy a wink in return.
So, Kate took his spot and had in-jokes with Billy. This was turning out great.
Teddy sat back and said nothing.
Billy looked in the rear view mirror and sighed, “Okay grumpy, what’s wrong?” he said, “Please tell me you aren’t jealous of Kate. You’ve seen Harry Potter, you get to laugh at the muggle joke too.”
Kate turned around in her seat to grin at Teddy. “Hey, I never used Billy as a Maypole. You’re ahead of him on that front.”
Teddy bit back the sarcastic rejoinder and shook his head, dismissing Billy’s question and concerns. “It’s fine. So...I’ve been trying to figure out what shape I should take. I obviously can’t go around with you two like myself, but I’m not sure we’ve reached the point culturally where someone like Hulkling wouldn’t freak people out.”
Rolling his eyes Billy dropped it, if Teddy wanted to be grumpy he could. They’d soon cheer him up when they got out there. “Maybe not, if we’re saving them.”
“I can’t wait to see this transformation thing. I mean, Billy’s talked about it, sure, but to actually see it in action?” She beamed, still turned around in her seat so she could get a good look at him. “I think looking relatively normal is probably the way to go. Can you just… be someone random? Or do you have to like, look like someone?”
“It’s easier if it’s someone--faster. Hulkling isn’t someone--I mean he’s someone, because I created him, and I imagined him--but he didn’t exist before I did. So...I could create someone else, like I did Hulkling.” Teddy glanced up at Billy in the mirror.
“It’s amazing. Teddy is incredible at it, you’re in for a treat,” Billy told Kate before catching Teddy’s gaze in the mirror, “It’s up to you. Whatever you’re comfortable doing,” he smiled.
“Well, I can’t wait to see who you come up with this time.” Kate said, grinning in a friendly way to Teddy in the backseat. She liked him already. She thought Teddy and Billy were good guys, and she couldn’t wait to get this crime fighting thing started. “Even if you’re both a bit nutty.” She added playfully, plopping back down into her seat to face forward.
The compliment felt good, and Teddy returned the smile in the mirror. “I’ll think on it,” he said, quietly. “How far is this place we’re going, anyway?”
“We’re not nutty,” Billy said, “Or if we are you just wait until you dream about us then you can be nutty too,” he added with a grin. “Not much further, we’ll park the car on a quiet street.”
“Billy does this amazing flying thing to get around, but I have to resort to like, running and climbing and stuff,” Kate said playfully. “We normally hang around on rooftops watching the dark alleyways. Especially the ones near seedy bars. For some reason, alcohol makes men think they can do things they really shouldn’t do.” The humor was gone from her voice by the end of her sentence.
Teddy cleared his throat, sensing how serious the moment had gotten. “...I have wings?” he offered. “Usually...I was the flying thing that got Billy around,” he added.
“Please have wings,” Billy said catching his eye in the mirror, “I remember that being fun,” he admitted with an almost shy smile.
Kate was really impressed, and that was obvious on her face. But she sighed, dramatically and playfully, and leaned back in her seat. “Uggggh. I’ll be the only earthbound crime fighter in our little group.” She sat up a bit and turned around to look at Teddy. “Promise you won’t leave me behind?”
Billy’s comment had made Teddy blush, and he’d ducked his head, but he lifted it again at Kate’s comment. “Don’t worry. We’re Young Avengers. We don’t leave anyone behind--whether they remember us or not.”
