Who: Kate and Billy When: During the Truth Plot Where: Out fighting crime What: Kate confesses things, Billy confesses things Rating/Warnings: Low/None Status: Complete
Kate and Billy kept their crime-fighting date, even though the world was going crazy. Again. There wasn’t as much crime now, actually, so a lot of what Billy and Kate did together now was hang out, practice their skills, and hope something illicit would happen under their noses. They’d have to get a better deal. Maybe find some… organized crime to stop. Something like that.
She was going through some martial arts forms, standing up on the post of a fence, trying to stop herself from babbling every truth she’d always wanted to tell him.
“Billy,” she finally said. “I met Justin. Did I tell you?”
Billy was practicing floating since it couldn’t really be called flying right then, and also hoping for something to happen. He’d been fairly quiet too since this truth thing was a little embarrassing and inconvenient. He didn’t want to start confessing who knows what to poor Kate.
“Oh? Was he okay? Did you talk about me?” he asked before sighing at himself.
Kate chuckled, turning to look at him. She had excellent balance, and was holding herself up on the fence post, one foot high in the air. She lowered it slowly. “Yes. He was fine. And we talked about you.” She responded. Then frowned. “Damn. I was going to turn that into a joke or something, but I can’t lie.”
“What did you both say?” he asked before sighing, “Oh well tonight will be interesting because I can’t either” he added when she informed him she couldn’t lie either. It was amazing how many lies people actually told, even small white ones.
“I honestly don’t remember everything that was said,” Kate explained, and that was absolutely true. She couldn’t lie. “But he seemed to still… you know. Have feelings for you. He was surprised that we knew each other. It’s a really small world when you bump into your gay best friend’s on-a-break-boyfriend in line for coffee.”
Billy nodded, “I still have feelings for him too that’s what makes it all so hard” Billy told her, “I think I’m in love with two people at once. You think that’s possible?” he asked her.
Kate took a long moment to think about it. She’d never been in love with one person, let alone two. She kept people at a distance when things got serious. “Yeah.” She said, though she was shaking her head no. She’d meant to say something else. “Damn. Well, I don’t know. I’ve never loved anyone. Not like you and Justin, but--wait.” She frowned. “You love two people? Who’s the other…” she gasped. “No. Way. Teddy??”
Billy blushed, this truth telling thing was getting very irritating. Though it helped that it was happening for Kate too. He nodded, “Yes. Teddy” he admitted, “I adore him. The feelings from the dreams are as strong in the waking world as they are there. But when I see Justin my heart still skips and I know I love him too”
“Wow. I’ve never been in love. I mean, I’ve never felt that… at least, not as strongly. I’ve had crushes before, but I don’t think it’s ever been like what you feel for them. Either of them. Or both of them if that’s the case.” Kate admitted. She frowned a little. “Is that weird? That I’ve never been in love like that before?”
Billy shook his head, "I don't think so. People find love at all times right? If you haven't met the right one at least you haven't tried to kid yourself"
“I definitely don’t lie to myself about that kind of thing,” Kate said. She had to be in control, and never confused sex with romance. “I do… sort of have my eyes on someone.” She admitted. “Have for a while. I just… I don’t know. he probably thinks I’m some stupid kid or something.”
“Then I think it’s not weird at all” Billy said confidently. “Oh, tell me who. Actually tell me everything. Nobody could think of you as a kid, you’re too awesome Kate and if they can’t see that then they don’t deserve you anyway”
Kate laughed quietly and almost bitterly. “Okay, but you can’t tell anyone. This is… kind of embarrassing, but… he’s a student of mine. He really doesn’t need to be, and actually sometimes I think I should be taking lessons from him, really, but… his name is Clint Barton.”
Billy knew his mouth fell open then and he possibly resembled a goldfish for a moment before he said, “Clint Barton? Hawkeye? You have a crush on Hawkeye? Holy shit Kate. He’s in our dream world, he’s an Avenger”
Kate blinked at him for a moment, wondering if he was making fun. But she believed him about talking the truth. He couldn't be lying. "What? You mean, he's... like, how we're the 'Young Avengers'?" He'd told her that much, anyway. "Do you... do you think he knows me, too? From his dreams?" Had Clint ever mentioned Kate in his dreams? She spent so much time ignoring them, she couldn't remember.
Billy nodded, “Exactly. I mean you’re like the younger girl version of him” he told her, “I don’t know what he’s dreamed exactly but he should know you. Or if not he will eventually, just like you will too”
Kate paused. She wasn’t sure what to think. She both liked and didn’t like the idea that he would know her from the Dreams. Had he … figured out who she was before he came in for lessons? That could be why he wanted to take them from her and no one else. What was their relationship like in the Dreams? Now she wanted to know.
“God, that’s so weird. Do I like him in the Dreams, too?” She asked, going pink. “I mean… are we sleeping together in the Dreams?” That was kind of an embarrassing question.
Billy shook his head, “Not that I know of” he said, “He’s kind of like your mentor. But hey, you could be and not have told me I guess” he added, before shrugging, “I really don’t know”
“Huh.” Kate said. She lowered herself down until she was sitting on the fencepost, leaning against her elbow propped on her knee. “If our friendship in the Dreams is anything like it is here, then I would have told you. I mean, if I’m anything there like I am here, and you’re like you are here, then how could we not be the best of friends there?”
Billy nodded, “It would be really strange if you hadn’t told me” he admitted, “We are best friends, there as well as here” he said with a smile, “You probably would have said something by now”
“Well, it’s good to know the feeling’s mutual.” Kate said, breaking into a smile. “Do you think I’m barking up the wrong tree? I mean, with Clint?”
Considering this Billy eventually shook his head, “No, I think it’s worth a go. I mean you guys would look cute together. And if you get a good feeling about him then I’d trust those instincts”
Kate blushed. She actually blushed. Damn, she felt like such a silly girl for blushing like that. But it also felt good to know that Billy was behind her. “Okay. I think it’s time.” Time to be honest with Clint. Tell him what she felt. And she hoped he wouldn’t laugh in her face.
Billy didn’t judge her for blushing, he still did around Teddy sometimes which was much worse. “Just remember I’m totally your cheerleading group” he said making a ‘go team’ gesture, “He’d be a fool not to date you”
“You’re the best cheerleader ever.” Kate laughed. Suddenly, she wanted a hug. A big one. She climbed down off the fence post and reached up to him. “C’mere. Hug it out.”
Billy lowered himself and wrapped her in a hug, “Everything will be okay Kate, you’ll see” and it had to be true right?
