Sharon was definitely looking pregnant. She was at twenty weeks now, half-way through her pregnancy, and didn’t fit in her pre-pregnancy clothes anymore. Most of them, anyway. She didn’t want to stretch out the ones that still fit, too, so she was in her maternity wear. That made her look even more pregnant with the high waistlines and stretchy waistbands.
She stepped into the bakery, wondering why she’d never come in her before. The smell in the shop was absolutely fantastic. She was the only customer in the shop, though, which was kind of nice. It felt intimate. She gravitated to the pastry case and leaned down a bit to inspect the goods held within.
Once Peeta had finished speaking to the woman on the network he scribbled down a few ideas for cupcakes and how he could potentially decorate them for her. He had a few things around the bakery from previous baby shower orders, so he could make use of those. He let himself get lost in those thoughts as he worked on some frosting of a cake for a bridal shower that was coming up.
He heard the ding of the door go off and he decided to go see if that was the woman from the network, so he set down his things and washed his hands before going up to the front, “Hello there,” he called out in greeting as he approached, “Anything I can get you from the case today?”
Sharon straightened up at the sound of the voice and found herself looking over the countertop at a hottie. Total hottie. Was this the same guy from Valarnet? His picture so didn’t do him justice. She blinked, then her cheeks went a little pink and she cleared her throat. “Hi. Yes. Um. What’s good?” She asked, breaking into a shy smile.
Peeta was kind of oblivious to the effect he had on women so he didn’t notice right away that she was blushing. He probably would have blushed as well and felt incredibly awkward if he did notice it. However, he did notice that she looked pregnant and then realized it was probably Sharon, “I made fresh lemon bars this morning. They’re pretty amazing. And you must be Sharon, I hope.”
Sharon laughed softly. “I’m Sharon. Is it that obvious?” She asked, then held out a hand to him to shake. She was half-way through her pregnancy. There was definitely a baby bump, though she was more glowing than ready to drop. “A lemon bar sounds like heaven.”
“Just slightly. I mean you should be showing if you’re to the point where you can find out the gender,” Peeta commented. She did look quite happy and glowing and he was glad he wouldn’t be dealing with any crazy hormones. He had run into a few of those women before and sometimes things got broken around here. He grabbed a lemon bar from the case and packaged it up for her, “Here you go. And do you want to sit down and discuss your cupcakes? I’ve got a couple ideas for you.”
Sharon accepted the lemon bar with a bright smile. “Thank you.” She lifted it to smell the lemon. Ungh. Totally her favorite. In this moment, anyway. “And yes, please. I would love to hear what you’ve got in mind. I’ve never done anything like this before.”
“Come on over here,” he grabbed one of his ordering sheets before coming out from behind the counter and bringing her over to the tables. He pulled out her seat before sitting in her own, “I’ve done a few gender reveals before, so I’ve got a couple ideas. One of them is that we can either color the cupcakes and frosting all the same color. Second, we can color the cupcakes and then maybe use like a neutral color frosting, but completely cover the cupcake so you won’t know until you peel back the wrapper. And third, we can make them just regular cupcakes, but inside we put colored frosting, so when you take a bite you find out what color it is on the inside.”
Sharon came over, gave him a little "thank you" and say down the proffered seat. She set down her purse and folded her hands to listen. "Oh," her face brightened. "I love the idea of not knowing until they take a bite! Can you really do that?"
“Yeah. I just bake them like regular cupcakes and then I can squeeze the frosting into the middle. Easy peasy,” Peeta commented with a laugh as he jotted down some notes onto his sheet, “What flavor cupcakes do you want? And what color frosting do you want on the top? You can pick whatever you want as long as it’s not pink or blue because that will be inside the cupcake.”
“Um… maybe white? Ooh, or butter cream? That’s sort of a yellow color, isn’t it? And vanilla cupcakes, maybe? I want a stark contrast to the frosting inside.” Sharon said, growing more and more excited about the idea the more they talked about it. “I’m thinking a dozen cupcakes? Is that enough for one order?”
“Yep, a dozen is perfect. And I can do a yellow tint to the frosting as well,” Peeta was happy that she was growing more and more excited about this as they talked. It was always one of his favorite things to help an idea bloom and see it through to the end. These cupcakes would be a lot of fun and he knew that Sharon would love the finished product.
“Yellow is good. It’s a non-gender specific color, too,” Sharon said, smiling warmly. This was great! She was getting more excited about it. Sometimes the pregnancy stuff was overwhelming, but there were times like these when she felt excited. “You’re so sweet to do this kind of thing for people.” She added, softly. “I’m pretty much on my own, so it makes me happy when I’ve got other people to help.”
“Haha, it’s something I love to do and I like being able to make a living off of it. And I do enjoy helping out people when I can as long as it’s not something completely over the top. Your order isn’t too complicated and I can certainly get it done. And I’m happy to be able to help you out because I’m sure it’s hard to do this all by yourself,” Peeta smiled at her and finished filling out the rest of the form and slid it over to her, “Check this to make sure it all looks right and this down here is your estimated total. I don’t think it’ll change.”
Sharon nodded, accepting the form to look it over. It was all perfect. She signed at the bottom. “You’re really really sweet. Thank you for all your help.” She said, and handed back the form. “I know where I’m coming for all my cupcake needs from now on.”
“You’re very welcome. And I would happily welcome all of your cupcake needs. And make sure to remember me for your baby’s first birthday,” Peeta added with a wink and a laugh as he took the sheet and rolled it up so he could put it up in his kitchen later.
“I absolutely will.” Sharon grinned, picking up her lemon bar. “So I’ll text you with the results when we know on Monday.” She said, and stood from her chair.
“Can’t wait. Have a great rest of your day and I’m glad that you posted about this so I could help you,” Peeta commented with a smile as he rose as well. He was glad that Valar had become such a valuable networking tool.
“Me, too.” Sharon gave him a warm smile, then a wave, and turned to head out of the bakery.
