Pepper woke slowly stretching before curling up against Tony once more, she was glad it was Saturday and they could laze around for a bit before facing the day. Especially since they had been up rather late the night before. Not that Pepper minded of course, it had been a very enjoyable night.
Tony loved spending those nights with Pepper. Sure, they only happened once or twice a week--neither of them was as young as they used to be--but when they happened, it was a marathon. Every time with Pepper was more memorable than the last. He never imagined he would love someone the way he loved her.
He turned and curled against her, too, wrapping his arms around her in his sleep.
Smiling to herself Pepper began pressing kisses to Tony’s skin, not intending it to really go anywhere but just wanting to wake him in the nicest way possible. They weren’t teenagers anymore but nights like last night were rather wonderful and Pepper always felt relaxed and happy afterwards.
“Morning Mr Stark” she whispered in his ear before kissing his cheek as he began waking up.
“Mmmf.” Tony responded, sleepily tipping his head to the side and exposing more skin for her to kiss. He broke into a grin, lifting a hand to trail up and down her back. “Morning. What time is it?”
“Almost nine” she told him, which for them really was already an impressive lay in, “I think we wore each other out last night” she grinned as she kissed his lips, “Anything on the agenda for today?” she asked.
“Sometimes I’m worried I can’t keep up with you.” Tony murmured, but then blinked his eyes open. Wait, had he really just confessed…? He swallowed and tried to push that aside. “No more sex for me today, I’m worried about chafing.” WAIT. He frowned and lifted his head, glancing once around the room. That wasn’t right. Why was he saying these things?
Pepper laughed, “Believe me you don’t need to worry about that” she promised him taken slightly aback by the honesty, or more the seriousness of the honesty. Then she almost completely lost it, “Oh my god Tony” she gasped between bouts of laughter, “I’m sorry, but what is wrong with you?”
Tony pulled away from Pepper and sat up. He frowned, biting his lip, and shook his head. “I have no idea what's wrong with me. I honestly didn’t mean to say those things.” He was confused and a little concerned.
As soon as Tony sat up looking so worried Pepper sat up too, “I’m sorry. It’s okay Tony, it’ll be fine. At least it was only me you were talking to. There are more embarrassing people you could be honest with” she tried to ease his worry.
This had happened before, hadn’t it? He’d read about it on Valarnet. Had he been through this before himself? Fuck, now he couldn’t remember. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “I’m sorry, Pep, I don’t want to say something stupid and mess anything up,” he added quickly. “...because we both know how bad my mouth is when I’m not under some weird kind of Orange County Truth Serum.” This would be even worse.
Pepper recalled something too but wasn’t sure if they’d been affected, with everything that happened it was hard to remember it all. “It’s alright. It’s not your fault and what could you mess up? Like you say people are used to you being fairly blunt so we’ll just try and limit your encounters. We’ll have to let Stiles know” Since other than Pepper he was the one who worked closely with Tony.
“Oh. Stiles. Right. I’ll send him a text. I wanted to meet with him soon anyway to show him his suit.” Shit. He really shouldn’t have said that. He wanted to talk to Pepper about it first, but he hadn’t brought it up. Maybe now was a good time? Then again, maybe now was the worst time if he couldn’t filter what was coming out of his mouth.
“His suit?” Pepper asked raising an eyebrow at him, “Maybe this truth telling has come at a good time if you’ve been keeping things from me” she said, “Grooming him to become the next Iron Man?”
Tony sighed. “I was going to talk to you about it.” There. Another truth. Point for Tony? “I just wanted to see if I could get the thing up and running before getting either of you involved. No unnecessary worry on your part, or excitement on his.” He paused. “Clint told me about his Legacy. Some girl from his dreams running around as the next Hawkeye. And it made me think… Not that I want a sidekick, but a protege.”
Okay that truth definitely went in his favour and she allowed a small smile to escape. “Okay, I can forgive you since it was to spare me from worry” even if she would worry anyway, she felt touched that he wanted to protect her. Whether it was necessary or not. “Well Stiles makes a good protege” she acknowledged approvingly.
Tony turned to her with both eyebrows raised. He hadn’t actually been expecting that response. “You think so?” He asked, surprise evident in his tone. “...I should keep secrets from you more often if this is how you react. The only other one I have is the Hawaii trip--” oh, shit, he shouldn’t have said that.
“I know you’ll do it anyway so it’s better I’m supportive and kept in the loop right?” Pepper said, was she really that bad that he expected her to yell or something? But his next words made her eyes widen, “Hawaii trip, what...actually no. Don’t tell me” she said quickly, letting her fingers rest over his mouth. “You can keep that one to yourself” she smiled.
“I shouldn’t have said--” but then her fingers were over his mouth. He stopped talking and pressed his lips against them. Then he moved her hand away with his so he could lean forward and kiss her lips instead.
Mmm that was better, maybe that was how she should keep him quiet from now on. Whenever he was going to speak his mind too much she’d simply have to kiss him. She was sure she could manage that. “You’ll need to be careful when you speak to Stiles, warn him what’s going on so he isn’t surprised when you come out with something you wouldn’t normally” she said when they pulled apart.
“Oh. That’s a good idea.” As if she needed to be told. “You always have the best ideas.” Tony added, grinning in a cheeky way. He knew that she knew that he was spitting out truths that weren’t normally (and didn’t need to be) said to win points.
Pepper smiled at that, “Thank you” she said, rewarding him with another kiss, “We should get moving I suppose. See how widespread this truth telling incident is this time round”
“Yes. Yes, you’re right.” Tony said. “Again. I’ve gotta shower, I’m not a fresh flower this morning.” Not exactly the kind of thing that he’d want to admit, but… it was true. He kissed her once more and then released her so he could head into the bathroom. He stopped and turned back to her. “You’re welcome to join me.”
Pepper chuckled a little, it was strange having Tony so honest, he was in general with her but this was different. And she did feel a little sorry for him, she’d hate to be compelled to tell the truth all the time. Smiling she pushed aside the covers and stood, “Now that is an invitation I cannot refuse” she said as she joined him.
