Rachel stopped by the Starbucks and picked up a couple of drinks, then headed straight to Glinda’s place. She knocked on the door, excited to catch up with Glinda and hear all about what the other woman had been up to. Rachel herself had been busy--taking care of Shoegasm, getting married (well, having a wedding ceremony and reception, anyway), and designing the new shoes she was going to start selling at Shoegasm.
She held up the cups when the door opened. “I brought coffee!”
Glinda had been busy herself, making sure her fashion house was running well and sorting out the plans for her new venture into daycare and preschool.
When Rachel arrived with coffee she looked up from her notebook and closed it, “You are a wonder” she smiled as she answered the door.
“I know that I was definitely in need of a coffee today, so I figured you were the same!” Rach held out the cup to her friend. “It’s just an excuse for me to indulge. A mocha on my own is a bit overboard, but when we’re drinking together?” She held up her cup as if in a toast.
"I am pretty much always in need of coffee" Glinda nodded tapping their cups together with a laugh, "Come in and get comfortable" she said taking Rachel's coat.
“Thanks!” Rachel said, wandering through the doorway and handing off her coat. “I want to hear how the business is going. I want to hear everything! I’ve been too busy lately, I’ve missed hanging out.”
"I can understand that completely. I'm not sure where February went I think I blinked and missed it" Glinda joked, "But things are going very well at the fashion house. It practically runs itself"
“I know what you mean. I’m still reeling. The wedding ate up all of my time and attention… both January and February are gone in the blink of an eye.” She moved to sit down with Glinda, getting comfortable so they could chat. “That’s amazing! I want to start up a business that will do that for me. Did I tell you I’m going to be selling shoes now at Shoegasm?”
"Thats a rather nice reason to lose a month I think" Glinda smiled, before listening. "Don't you sell shoes already?" Glinda asked, it was a shoe store after all.
“Oh, no,” Rachel laughed. “I mean, I’m designing shoes to sell at Shoegasm. I found this really fantastic company that takes my designs and creates shoes to my specifications. They send me a sample pair, then I make modifications. And they can make them in every size. It’s a little pricey, but man those shoes are gorgeous!”
“Oh I see” Glinda said, in realisation laughing at herself a little. “Blonde moment” she claimed, “That’s incredible. And you know for good quality innovative designs people will pay, you shouldn’t worry about that aspect of it” she assured her.
Rachel laughed. She was able to laugh with Glinda at her blonde moment. One of the reason they got along so well, they could laugh together and not at one another. Rachel nodded. "Well, people know that we're a more high end shoe store. We've got fashion and function. Ooh," she grinned more brightly. "I like that. Fashion and Function!"
It was a good thing really since Glinda had a number of blonde moments, bleeds from her dream she was finding. It got rather annoying especially when she started using made up words without realising it. “That’s a good tagline” Glinda commented.
“Though, my shoes are definitely more fashion than function, but it might work for the shop!” Rachel was definitely pleased with herself for coming up with it. It seemed like the best tagline ever. She grinned, sighing, and relaxed for a moment. “Hey, can I ask you something?”
“I think some women consider fashion part of function, and I think it would work well” Glinda said before nodding as she sipped her coffee, “Of course you can”
Rachel took a deep breath. "Well, this is getting down to something severely personal now." She said, apologetically. "My husband and I have been married for just over a year now. We've been together longer than that. Several years. And I just... I know it probably feels like the time to start having babies, but... I don't think I'm ready yet." She paused, frowning.
"He and I haven't talked about it yet."
“That’s okay. You can talk to me” Glinda assured her friend before listening, “Oh my. Well, has he given you any indication that he’s ready for kids? I mean there’s nothing saying just because you’ve been together ‘x’ amount of years that a family has to follow”
“No. We haven’t talked about it at all, I mean… I know he’ll probably want to be a dad eventually… and I know I want to be a mother, too.” Rachel explained. “Thank you for listening. I just don’t know if I’m supposed to bring it up or wait for him to say something or just… assume that we’re on the same page?”
“Well, I’m no expert but it sounds like you are. I mean if neither of you have mentioned it and you’re both happy with how you are right now. You could talk to him if you wanted to put your mind at ease” she suggested, though it did sound like both Rachel and her husband were happy to wait.
“Yes. I’m just not sure how to bring it up. It seems awkward however I do it in my head.” Rach was worried now she was being contrary for the sake of being contrary. She sighed. “Thank you for listening,” she repeated. “I think I just needed to get it off my chest, you know?”
“You’re welcome and I hope it helped even just a little” Glinda said, “And just remember, you love each other and you’ve chosen freely to spend the rest of your lives together. That has to mean you’re on the same wavelength a lot of the time right?”
“It did. It does.” Rachel gave Glinda a warm smile. “Yes. You’re absolutely right. We’re a match made in heaven, so this shouldn’t be hard. It’s just a conversation like any other.” She took a deep breath, and when she breathed out she felt relief wash over her. “Thank you, Glinda.”
“Anytime” Glinda smiled, she wasn’t the most intellectual woman in the world but she was good with people and sometimes that included advice giving. Or really just pointing out things that people sometimes lost sight of.
