Gwen made it early to the cafe to wait for Hiccup to come and meet with her. She’d sent him a note so that they could reconnect--she wanted to check in on him. Honestly, she felt like lately she’d been so focused on her career that she’d lost touch with a lot of her friends. She was fixing that now. Making plans to catch up with all the people she’d lost touch with over the last few months.
She sent a note to Hiccup to come and meet her at this little coffee shop. And lo and behold, there were a handful of adorable Girl Scouts wearing blue uniforms out front selling cookies. Perfect. She was running low on Thin Mints, and had to buy another box. Okay, she bought five.
Then she went inside and ordered a coffee, sat down by the window, and pulled out her phone to play while she waited.
Hiccup was excited to hear from Gwen and happily agreed to meet up with her and catch up. It had been too long since he had spoken to her and he wanted to an excuse to get away from campus for a little bit. Too much work was making his brain start to melt and no one wanted that.
Unfortunately there were Girl Scouts outside the cafe when he walked in and he was not good at telling them no and suddenly had a bag with a few boxes inside of it hanging from his hand as he walked into the shop and looked for Gwen. There was a sheepish look on his face as he made his way over to her, “My mother is going to kill me for buying more cookies.”
Gwen laughed, nodding. “Mine won’t, but they definitely got me, too.” She motioned to the bag sitting at her feet. Then she stood and gave him a quick hug in greeting. “How are you, Hic? God, it’s been forever.” She slipped back down into her chair, giving him her full attention.
"I shouldn't waste school money on cookies," he commented with a laugh as he stepped forward to return her hug, "I am good. New semester is going pretty well so far. And it has been too long. How are you? Work treating you well?" When they parted he sat down and opened a box of cookies.
“Yeah, pretty much.” Gwen said. She waited for him to open the box, then reached forward to steal one. “I mean, there’s nothing new to report. Everything’s the same. Does that make me sound like the most boring person ever?”
"Just a little bit," he teased good naturedly as he allowed her to steal a cookie from him, "not all of us get dragons for pets and therefore have nothing fun to report on. Oh, but the way, I got a dragon and Pepper Potts helped me find a place to store them. Kiiiiind of a big deal now."
“What?” Gwen asked, breaking into a bright grin. “Whaaaat?” She added again, grinning. “Really? That’s absolutely fantastic, Hiccup. I mean… you have a dragon! That’s your Dream stuff, right?”
“For real. Toothless and Astrid’s dragon, Stormfly, showed up out of the blue one day and now they’re living here. It’s completely surreal to have them here, but we’re really enjoying being able to put some of our dream training to use and fly them around. And they seem to be quite sociable so if you ever want to come see them, let me know,” Hiccup was only allowing select people to come see the dragons because he didn’t want to overwhelm them, but he wanted to adjust them to the new world. Gwen would probably love seeing them up close.
“Toothless? Your Dragon is named Toothless?” Gwen asked, grinning. She nodded excitedly. “I would love to come and meet him. Are you sure he’d want me to come and meet him? He’s not shy, is he?” Gwen lifted her coffee to take a sip, and found that it’d cooled to the absolute perfect temperature.
“Yeah. He has teeth, but sometimes he can pull them back and look all gummy. It’s pretty cute,” Hiccup answered with a smile. He certainly loved talking about his dragons, “And yeah, he likes people. They’re very sociable animals, at least the ones we are training. Toothless doesn’t mind meeting new people and you don’t have to be nervous because he’s very sweet.”
“That’s… what a great mechanism. I mean, he can be cute and cuddly, but then be fierce when he needs to,” Gwen said, assuming a little bit about the dragon she hadn’t met yet. “I really would love to meet him.” She added, softly. “I mean, whenever you’ve got time and want to introduce us.”
“Oh, he is definitely fierce. But I promise he won’t do anything to hurt you. I will have to check my schedule to make sure when I’m free, but I totally want you to come by and see him,” he answered her with a grin before getting up, “I’m gonna go grab a drink real quick. Don’t eat all my cookies while I’m gone.”
“Send me a text, when you know?” Gwen said. “Okay. I promise only one more.” She snuck her hand out and took another one from the box while he popped up to go grab a drink.
“I will,” Hiccup assured her as he went up to the counter and ordered a hot chocolate. It only took a moment before he was back at the table and raised an eyebrow at her, “You stole cookies, didn’t you? I knew I couldn’t leave you alone with these. Shame shame.”
“I’m totally not trustworthy, am I?” Gwen said, grinning. She had a couple of crumbs at the corner of her mouth, too, making her look more guilty than she actually was. “I can’t help it that those awful Girl Scouts put crack in their cookies.”
“They totally do,” He agreed with her with a laugh and pulled out the entire packaging and gave a few more to her, “We may as well finish this one off so that no one else can eat them. Besides, these taste good dipped in drinks.” He proceeded to dip it into his hot chocolate and then take a bite.
“Oh, absolutely.” Gwen took a couple more out of the package, and popped the lid off her to-go cup so she could dunk, too. “So,” she said between bites. “How’s school? And everything else? I heard about the Dragon, but… how’s Astrid?”
“School is good. Can’t wait for the year to be over. I’m ready for a break,” He answered with a bashful smile, which only grew when she mentioned Astrid, “Astrid is great. I need to get us all to go out. You have a boyfriend, right? We can do a double date. I am trying to make sure I branch out of my campus area and go out and explore more, so if you know a good place to have dinner, I am all ears.”
“Yeah, Michael.” Gwen said, grinning. “We should all go out. That’d be really fun. I’ll look into dinner. I spend so much time at work I don’t really know about places to eat, but I can Yelp it.” That’s where she got all of her info and reviews and whatnot. “We could do something fun, too. Like bowling or the boardwalk.” More than just dinner.
“Those would be fun as well. I haven’t done the boardwalk, so that could be a good thing to do. Maybe there’s a great restaurant around there that we can go to,” Hiccup offered up as a suggestion. That sounded quite nice. Dinner and something to do over by the water and hopefully it would be nice out and no crazy snowstorms or anything like that.
"Our maybe we can do greasy boardwalk food," Gwen suggested, grinning. "Chilli cheese dogs and funnel cakes?" She beamed. That also sounded like fun. "I'll make Michael win me a prize at one those fairway games booths."
“Oh my god. That sounds delicious and I would try to win Astrid a prize, but she’d probably step in and win herself a prize. Actually, if she won the prize I would claim it as my own,” Hiccup couldn’t help but laugh because that was exactly what would happen. He was getting better at being “strong” thanks to the dreams, but Astrid was still more of an athlete than he was.
Gwen laughed, too. “I can totally imagine that happening.” She said, grinning brightly. “This is the plan. Boardwalk double date. I love it.” She lifted her cup for a sip of her coffee, a little disappointed that there weren’t any more cookies. Though, she couldn’t conceive of opening another box for more. Girl Scout Cookie Season was going to make her fat.
“Awesome. We’ll figure that out soon then. Let me know when you’re available. I think we have spring break coming up late March, so that is always a possibility,” he took a sip of his drink and finished up another cookie. He would love to just sit around and eat cookies forever, but he knew that he would get bored of it soon.
“Yeah, totally. Oh, I remember Spring Break.” Gwen said, grinning brightly. “You college kids are so cute. I could just pinch those cheeks.” She was kidding! Obviously. She put the top back on her cup of coffee. “I really should get back to work. I hate to eat cookies and run, but… I’ll text you when I’m free for the Boardwalk.”
“Oh my god. Don’t make fun of me for something I can’t control,” He playfully stuck his tongue out at her with a laugh before settling into a smile, “And look at you, ya old person, having to get back to work. But yes, please text me and I’ll talk to Astrid. I think that could be a lot of fun!”
Gwen laughed. “Touche.” Turnabout was fair play. She grinned happily. “Sounds good. I’ll text you as soon as I have a chance to talk to Michael.” As she stood from the table, she reached over to ruffle his hair. “See you soon, Hic.”
“See you later, Gwen,” He commented with a laugh as he tried to bat her hand away from his hair. As she left the coffee shop he packed up his stuff and got ready to head back to campus to finish some homework assignments.
