Rachel was at Shoegasm. Over the last month--not quite a month, maybe few weeks?--she’d become very intimate with the store. Cindy had been gone, and Rachel didn’t know when the blonde was coming back. So she was running things temporarily, trying to keep it all together for Cindy’s return. And she was really good at it.
Now she had permission to design her own shoes to sell in the store. And Rachel was going to design some high end, unbelievable, haute couture styles. She invited Portia over to see her designs.
Portia was beyond excited to see Rachel’s designs, shoes had never been something she had been particularly good at designing so she really wanted to see how well her friend had done. She had a feeling they’d be amazing.
Walking into the store she waved at Rachel, “Hey” she greeted, “How are you doing?” she thought Rachel was being rather incredible in running this place while her boss was absent.
“Hey!” Rach said after turning at the sound of her friend’s voice. “Great! I’m good. How are you?” She asked, setting down the box she’d been shelving, and turning her full attention to Portia.
"I'm good. I have a week off before being ridiculously busy for the rest of the month so I'm making the most of it" Portia replied, "This place looks great" she complimented.
“Thank you! Though, it’s really Cindy’s work. I’m just keeping the place going. Hey, I’m glad that you had time to come by and visit! I wanted to show you some sketches.” Rachel said, beaming. She respected Portia’s opinions on things, and knew that the other woman had a similar eye for fashion, so she was curious what her friend would think of her designs.
"Well you're doing an excellent job I'm sure she'll be very pleased" Portia replied with a smile before nodding, "I'm excited to see"
“Come on back, then.” Rachel turned to lead Portia to the office, motioning to the girl behind the register that she was going into the back. They walked quickly through the fairly large store room, and into Cindy’s office. Rachel turned her notebook around and held it out so Portia could look at the drawings on each page.
As Portia was handed the notebook she sat down in the chair, "Oh Rachel, these are wonderful" she said as she took in the detail, "You capture your ideas perfectly" she smiled looking up at her friend.
“Thank you!” Rachel said, beaming brightly. “I found this company that will make my sketches into shoes. Look.” She pulled a box out from under the desk and opened it. Inside were a pair of white and purple heels that she’d designed. “Once I give them the go-ahead, they make them in whatever size I want! They’re a touch on the pricey side, but my own designs! Isn’t it fantastic??”
“Incredible” Portia agreed nodding as she looked at the shoes, “These are beautiful. This is so amazing Rachel. It truly is fantastic!” she exclaimed, “Oh I’m so happy for you!”
"Thank you!" Rach beamed. "I'm really excited! Things are going so well. I mean, it's terrible that Cindy was gone for so long, but we're all pulling things back together." She was practically glowing. "And these shoes. I'm so in love with them! I should get you a pair. Whatever kind you like. We'll make ourselves some going out outfits and get shoes to match!"
“That’s a lovely idea” Portia nodded, “I have to admit I’m jealous, shoes have always been the one design that has eluded me. I’ve never been able to get it right. So I feel rather lucky to have you to call on now” she grinned.
“I might have to switch completely to shoes,” Rachel sighed happily as she lifted the shoe she’d designed and held it gently. It was precious to her. “...I’m so in love with designing shoes.”
Portia laughed, “Well you can design shoes for me anytime” she said, “I’ll hire you” she told her friend happily. It was so nice to see how passionate Rachel was about her new venture.
“Definitely! Well, you know where to find me, for sure.” Rach said, beaming happily. She set the shoe back down. “We should do something fun soon. To celebrate. I’ve got the shoes up on the website, and people are coming in. I’ll be doing some advertising, too, to high fashion magazines.”
“I can absolutely help with the advertising, I mean if we do use anything in one of the movies I’m working on that will increase your range. Other studios and productions request lists of suppliers all the time” Portia told her, “And definitely yes to something fun”
“Really?” Rachel perked up considerably at that. “Hey, I can design shoes for a movie! Do you need any help? Because I’m really good.” She insisted, playfully picking up her shoe again as proof.
“I’m working on some initial designs right now but once I have them more solidly down on paper I could bring them by? See what your expert eye thinks?” she asked, “I think we’d make a good team”
“I would love that.” Rachel said, grinning brightly. “I think so, too.” More acclaim for her personal business, for the shop, and she’d be helping create something amazing. Win-win! She was always in to explore new business ventures.
“That’s decided then. I’ll drop you a text when I’ve done and then we can get together for a little design session” Portia grinned, she loved helping out her friends and this would be a fun venture for Rachel too. Portia herself loved working at the film studio.
“I love this plan.” Twice using the word ‘love’ in almost as many sentences. Rachel was really into this idea. She couldn’t wait to work with Portia. “Do you want to pop out for a quick coffee? I’ve got a few minutes on my break.”
“That sounds really nice actually. If you’re sure you have time” Portia said, “I’ll get them, my treat as a celebration of possibly being able to work together”
“That works for me!” Rachel grinned, then gave the news she was heading out to her coworker. She and Portia could head out of the store and grab that coffee!
