What the hell? Was Veronica’s first thought when she woke up, or was actually woken up. There was something licking her face. “Ugh,” she grumbled not opening her eyes just yet. Pete must have gotten in her room. Didn’t he usually sleep in Sharon’s room? What the hell was he doing in hers?
“Sharon!” Veronica called, rolling over and putting the pillow over her head to block the licks from the dog. “Come get Pete! I don’t have to be up for another twenty minutes.”
Of course, Sharon was fast asleep curled up with Pete. She lifted her head, bedhair all a mess, and frowned at the doorway. She always left it slightly ajar so that Pete could come and go as he pleased.
“Pete’s right here!” She yelled back, double-and-triple-checking to make sure that it was, indeed, Pete in the bed with her. (Who else would it be?)
Wait, what? If Pete was with Sharon then what the hell was in her bed? Veronica removed the pillow from over her head and finally opened her eyes. She couldn’t really believe what she saw. There was a pit bull sitting on her bed wagging it’s tail. It was the dog that was in her dreams.
“Uh Sharon? I think you should come in here.” Veronica called again sitting up to pet the dog. Backup. It had to be Backup. Before she knew it the dog jumped on her licking her face again.
Sharon slowly pulled herself up. Pete lifted his head to frown at her, but then put it back down. Lazy dog. So Sharon climbed out of bed, pulled on her robe, and moved into the hallway. “What’s up?” She asked. When her head poked into Veronica’s room, her hair was sticking in a handful of different directions, and she was squinting with tiredness.
“What does it look like?” Veronica replied, confusion filling her voice. Because really what the hell was going on? This was a way bigger dream ‘gift’ than she was expecting. However she couldn’t help but laugh at the dog’s excitement. “I think Pete has a new friend.”
As soon as Sharon’s eyes focused on the dog, they went wide. She was suddenly awake. Way more than she’d been seconds ago. “...it looks like a strange dog is in your bed, licking your face.” But Veronica was laughing, so it couldn’t have been that bad? “...did you get visited by the dog fairy in the middle of the night?”
“More like the dream fairy,” Veronica replied a small smile on her face. “Sharon, meet Backup,” Veronica finally checked the collar on the dog just to be sure this was in fact Backup, but really who the fuck else would it be. “Yup, Backup. He’s my dog in the dreams.” Not that, that really needed the extra explanation with her previous answer.
Sharon moved into the room to reach up a hand and let Backup sniff her. “...this is your… wow. That’s big, Veronica.” She grinned as the dog licked her fingers.
Pete appeared in the doorway, looking as tired and confused as a dog ever could.
Thank god Sharon entered the room giving Backup something to lick other than her face. Not that Veronica hated it. Okay she kind of liked it. But, still getting a break was nice. “Yeah, I guess it is pretty big,” she agreed. “But it’s also pretty awesome,” she couldn’t keep the grin off her face.
“Pete!” she motioned for the older dog to come over. “Come meet your new roomie.”
Pete came cautiously into the room, limping on one of his hind legs. He lifted his head to sniff at the newcomer, almost suspiciously.
“It’s okay, Pete,” Sharon said, reaching down to pat her own dog’s head. “He’s a good guy.” Then, to Veronica, “he is a good guy, right?”
Veronica laughed. “Yeah he’s a good guy. Well unless you are on my bad side,” she paused to scratch the back of Backup’s ears. “But lucky for you and Pete, you are both on my good side. He protects me in the dreams when I get in sticky situations. Like my back up.” Hence the name.
“Remind me to never get on your bad side.” Sharon said, grinning. “He’s got a great name. And hey, at least we have dog food on hand.”
Pete perked up at the sound of the words ‘dog food.’
“I don’t think you could ever get on my bad side,” Veronica assured her friend before laughing at Pete’s reaction to the mention of dog food. “Well I guess we should feed them.” Who even knew how hungry Backup was.
“Besides we are both up now,” Veronica couldn’t help but sigh as she finally climbed out of the bed. So much for those last twenty minutes of sleep.
“Good to know.” Sharon grinned. “Just remember that when the baby’s up at two AM and I’m wandering the house bouncing him or her on my arm trying to get the thing to sleep.” She reached down and patted Pete’s head. “Probably. We’re both up. I’ll get the coffee going.”
Not that she drank any. But the smell helped her wake up. “C’mon, Pete. Let’s show BackUp where we keep the kibble.” She turned to lead the dogs out of Veronica’s bedroom.
