Merlin had decided today was the day to bring in Ben, he’d received an email at the beginning of the week from Pepper asking him if she could see the baby and a few of his team had asked the same so he’d gotten permission to bring him in.
He’d spent about an hour in Pepper’s office - she’d brought the baby a few toys - and was now on his way to surprise Gwen. Knocking on her office door he grinned.
Gwen was in her office, working hard. She had her computer on, and was going through her emails. Stupid emails. It always took her an hour or two just to get to the bottom of her inbox, and even then there were still stupid ones left in there that she didn’t know what to do with.
“Come in,” she called out, eyes still on the screen.
“Auntie Gwen looks busy Ben, do you think we should leave her alone?” Merlin said to the child in his arms, who just waved his arms around and gurgled. Looking up he shot a grin at Gwen.
Gwen’s eyes tore from the screen the moment she heard Merlin’s voice. She bounded up from her chair, glowing brightly at the sight of her friend (and new adoptive nephew, thankyouverymuch… so long as she didn’t have to change diapers). “You’d better not!” She exclaimed, coming around her desk. “Oh my God!! He’s so little!” She said, moving closer to get a better look.
Merlin smiled brightly, “He is but he’s a sturdy little guy” he said, “Do you want to hold him?” he offered as he watched Gwen looking at Ben in awe. He was so proud of his son already, it was kind of adorably ridiculous.
“Can I?” Gwen asked. She had younger brothers, so she’d held babies before. But it’d been a really long time. Her hands came out right away, poised to accept the newborn into her arms. “He is just… amazing.”
“Of course you can, just remember to support his head” he told her with a grin, knowing she’d be perfectly fine. “He is pretty amazing isn’t he?” he said looking at his son in Gwen’s arms.
Gwen nodded. She knew that new moms and dads had to remind everyone about supporting the head, so she didn’t take it personally. And she was really good about doing just that. She held the baby carefully, cuddling him close against her chest. “Oh my God, Merlin, he’s perfect.” She said, gently bouncing him around. It almost made her want one.
Merlin appreciated it, though he'd discovered he was more relaxed than he'd expected to be as a new dad. "Careful now, I take no responsibility for increased broodiness he causes" he couldn't help teasing.
“No no no,” Gwen laughed. “No. I mean, sure, I’d like to be a mom some day, but … Michael and I are nowhere near there.” She loved him, but she wasn’t sure this was forever. Was that terrible? For now it was wonderful. For tomorrow, next week, next month, maybe even next year. But forever? “For now I’ll just borrow yours whenever I have a mothering urge, and give him back when he starts to stink.”
Merlin nodded, "Good, I knew you were a sensible one Gwen Stacy" he grinned ruffling her hair, "And you are always welcome to borrow him though nappy changing is a skill everybody should know" he added with a smirk.
Gwen beamed. She was proud of her plan. “Ah. That part. Yuck.” Gwen said. “I think I’d be up for babysitting if it wasn’t the poop part. Not a big fan of that.” She teased. “Hey, I’m just about ready for lunch. You want to go grab a burrito or something? Or do you need to get Ben home to his mummy?”
“It’s not so bad when they’re little it’s just mess it’s when it starts looking like proper poo that it gets creepy” Merlin grinned, “I can do lunch. I’m giving Audrey a day off, I’ve got food for Ben so we’re good to go”
"A whole day? Wow. How'd she swing that?" Gwen asked, grinning. "Nevermind. I don't wanna know. What happens in your bedroom stays in your bedroom. Grab my purse, would you?" It was on the desk, but Gwen didn't trust herself to take a hand off the baby to pick it up. She turned to lead the way out of the office.
It was lunchtime. And she wanted to cuddle with the baby some more.
Merlin laughed, “You have a filthy mind Gwen Stacy” he teased her as he grabbed her purse for her and Ben’s bag and followed her from the room. Cuddling and lunch probably sounded like heaven to Ben. And it didn't sound bad to Merlin either, though maybe not the cuddling part.
