Where: The beach

Usually yoga in the park was more Zatanna’s style. She even had recurring sessions with Elaine now, and it seemed to be helping the other woman a little. It was certainly beneficial for Zee herself, who had been exposed to more dreams - more dreams, more magic, slowly seeping in. It was changing her, she knew that, but she didn’t want to lose herself entirely - the woman she dreamed of, she carried the weight of her decisions and the magic could sometimes be a curse as much as it was a gift. It colored her perceptions and prickled beneath her skin; yes, she was changing, and she couldn’t stop it but she could...control it. Somewhat.
She wasn’t a woman who waited for Fate to turn the cards. They were a tool, nothing else. Not the absolute.
Jogging on sand could be just as tough on feet as the road, so she had her trusty sneakers on while she went for a trek along the beach. One mile, in soft sand, was like two - and she was feeling it, her iPod turned up, her hair pulled back into a ponytail. Dressed in running capri’s and a tank top, she looked the part. And she was mostly paying attention to the music until she passed someone who looked familiar.
“Hey, I know you!” Blurted out, as she skidded to a stop. Was he wearing...short shorts?
Like most mornings, Magnus was running on the beach in his usual attire of short, black, 80s style shorts. It wasn’t quite as warm as other mornings so this morning he was also wearing a wife beater, not that it really helped to keep him any warmer than if he hadn’t been wearing a shirt. As he ran, he noticed the other woman, but he didn’t recognize her until she called out to him, causing him to stop and turn towards her. Of course his first thought was that she only recognized him as a result of his occupation. He got stopped often because someone recognized him from a photoshoot. However, this time, as he got a good look at the woman, he realized that he recognized her as well, “Zatanna. The magician, correct?” He asked, watching her with his yellow, cat’s eyes. Having not expected to run into anyone, he hadn’t thought to put up a glamour to mask them.
“Yep!” she grinned, definitely captivated by the ‘look’ of the guy; Zee actually really liked his unique eyes, they suited him. Beyond all that she had a decent memory, and she wouldn’t forget someone she called up on stage during her act who was a professional model, anyway. “You’re Magnus, right? Nice to see you again.”
She turned her iPod all the way off with a swish of fingers and offered a hand for a shake, regulating her breathing so she wasn’t panting all over him - she’d been in the middle of her cleansing jog, and was kinda sweaty. “I didn’t know you run on this beach too. I’ll have to come here more often.”
Magnus nodded and shook her hand, “That’s correct. It’s nice to see you again as well. I’m actually surprised you recognized me,” Unlike now, where he was dressed down, when he and his friends had attended her show he had been decked out in leather pants, a zebra printed button up shirt and his hair had been full of glitter and as had his eyeliner. Yes, Magnus went all out when he went out for a night on the town. “I actually live nearby so I usually run on the beach. Quiet this time of the morning and I’m less likely to get run over by a bike or someone on skates.” The sidewalk could be a dangerous place sometimes.
Getting run over by a cyclist for sure put a damper on what was supposed to be an invigorating run. Zee chuckled throatily, sugar and spice. “Good call.” Wanting peacefulness and some quiet time was why she opted for yoga in the park too. “Okay, so I have to ask...”
Not that she was trying to be rude, or nosy, but call it genuine kitten curiosity. An idle gesture, as she studied his face. “What’s up with the eyes? Is that...a thing?” She’d first talked to Magnus on the infamous ‘dream network,’ so she assumed it kind of was. “I like them though.” Hers were an electric blue, although they tended to glow and spark when she practiced her magic.
Magnus couldn’t help but smile at the question and he nodded, “Warlock. It’s one of my demon marks.” His other was the lack of a navel, which had happened more recently, but since he was wearing a shirt, she couldn’t see that, “I wore contacts at first to hide them when they first changed. Now I can put up glamors.” As he spoke, his eyes changed from yellow, cat’s eyes to the dark brown they had been before they’d changed.
“Ooh!” That was a handy little trick. Zee knew that Raven used something similar, to hide her demon skin. Having to utilize glamour spells must be a thing for those of the ‘fire and brimstone’ persuasion. “I don’t think I’ve met another warlock before. At least not here.” There was Constantine, in her dreams - and those were interesting, with him as sort of the blue-collar, rough-around-the-edges, working man’s warlock. Magnus had a very cool, classy vibe about him.
She always liked meeting others who were into magic. “I know I do stage stuff, but that’s just a portion. I’ve been learning more,” she said. As a demonstration, she held out her palm - flame flickered above it, just very briefly with a spoken word of erif then licked off into eci, with a hiss and cooling down, icicles forming before disintegrating completely.
“I’ve been trying to sort of...gather other magic users. People seem to need a little arcane boost here, pretty often.”
“In my dreams, I don’t deal with too many Mundanes, what we call humans, so I don’t really use a glamor all that much,” He explained as he dropped it, his eyes returning to what was now normal. He watched as she demonstrated her own powers, “Impressive.” He then held up his own hand and blue sparks of lightning began to dance between his fingers, “That would be my version.” His smile widened as he closed his fingers, snuffing out the sparks, “So, what are you then? In your dreams, I mean?” Magnus also enjoyed meeting other magic users and he wondered if she’d met Merlin or Billy yet.
The blue sparks were familiar and pretty, they had Zatanna grinning like she was a kid in a candy store. Apparently electrokinesis was something she could do as well - all of the elements she had some degree of control over, or could summon - but she hadn’t practiced many besides fire and ice yet. It just seemed like so much; she didn’t want to overwhelm herself, or cause a head explosion.
“Homo magi,” she answered Magnus’s question, re-tying her ponytail. “It’s an ancient race of magic users in my dreamworld. Born with magic in the blood, but also with an inclination toward learning other magic too. I didn’t even know I had those sorts of powers for awhile, until I went on this quest to find my father. Then my stage act just became really authentic.”
Zatanna lost both her parents too, like she had in this life, and it was odd how the wounds still stung in their similarities. “We’ll have to get together properly, maybe talk magic sometime,” she suggested. “And once I get the clubhouse set up, you should think about joining.”
“I always had magic, in my dreams. Scared my mother and step-father.” Scared was probably an understatement, considering the fact that his appearance and abilities had driven his mother to suicide and his step-father to try and drown him, “I later found others like myself and learned what I was truly capable of.” There was a lot that Magnus could do and in the waking world he had barely scratched the surface of his abilities.
“A magic clubhouse?” He asked, brows raising, “Will we have membership cards and a secret handshake?” He thought that was an exceptional idea. “I know a few other magic users that I could probably recruit.” They were all so different, which was what intrigued Magnus the most. In his dreams, every Warlock looked different; had a different demon’s mark, but they all possessed the same sort of abilities for the most part.
“It’s comforting, I think, to find others like yourself. Or...like us. You know what I mean.” Magic could potentially frighten people - it wasn’t understood easily, wasn’t really ‘natural,’ and sometimes it just couldn’t be explained. But people who wanted to use it to help others, and do good things, well, Zee supported that entirely.
She laughed, and instead of answering the playful inquiry right away she conjured her own business card, flipping it between two fingers. That was a trick she knew how to do even without the crackle and sizzle of something otherworldly running through her veins. “Probably so, I mean, or else we wouldn’t be considered cool. All the cool clubs have something. It’d be great if you could recruit people. Here’s my card for the future though...”
Now, where to put it, was the question. Probably best to just hand it over. “You have pockets in those babies?” The short shorts!
Magnus watched as she conjured the card and laughed as she questioned where he could put it, “I do. I need somewhere to keep my ID after all.” Smiling, he took the card from her and read over it quickly before slipping it into the pocket in his shorts, “I’ll definitely pass the info over to the magic users I know.” He had a feeling that the others would also be interested in joining Zatanna’s magic clubhouse.
The more the merrier! “We’ve got design layouts for the ‘clubhouse,’” She made air quotes about the word, but it would obviously be something functional and not like, a kiddie thing in someone’s backyard with lemonade and cookies. “It’s going to be a place to practice and train, plus sort of an underground spot for meetings and things. Both will be connected by a tunnel, for easy access.”
Apparently Lina had spells that could make tunnels? Who knew! That wasn’t something in Zee’s wheelhouse. “I’ll be updating about it soon but if anyone you talk to has any more questions in the meantime, just have them give me a shout.”
“Well, if I wasn’t intrigued before, I certainly am now.” Magnus said, still grinning. “And just as an FYI, I can use my abilities to redecorate.” Since Magnus’ abilities had manifested and he’d gotten a hang of them, the decor in his house never stayed the same for long just like in the dreams. It was definitely a perk, not having to hire a decorator or contractor and spend money, in general, when he wanted a change.
Damn. The sly-looking cat-eyed warlock had redecorating skills? Color Zatanna impressed. “That would be fantastic,” she basically tried not to swoon. “I’ll definitely be in touch.” A quick check of her iPod showed her that she should probably be getting back home soon, since she had to work later tonight and needed the time beforehand to run errands and maybe even do a load of laundry. Hey, sparkledust was really difficult to wash out of things sometimes.
“For now, I better let you go though. But it was great meeting you officially, Mr. Magnus.” Her eyes glittered, clearly pleased.
“Just Magnus. Or Mr. Bane, but I prefer Magnus.” Mr. Bane made him feel old and he was only twenty one. “I look forward to hearing from you and I’ll let you know what the others think as well.” He was also looking forward to telling Alec about his run in with Zatanna and the offer that she had made him, “See you around, Miss. Zatara.” With that, he started running again in the direction he’d been going when they had stopped.
