Rose hadn’t seen D’Art since their first run in over coffee. She knew that it was hard to get out during the blizzard and was excited to see him again. He probably didn’t think she would actually show up with coffee and pastries, but she was determined to see her friend. She stopped by her local shoppe and picked up enough coffee for three (in case Athos was home) and got a big box of all different kind of pastries and bagels. It was later in the morning, but who wouldn’t want to have a lazy day with coffee and pastries? It sounded nice to Rose!
She hailed a cab and balanced all the items into the back, giving the driver the address. The whole trip to D’Art’s house was making sure the coffee didn’t spill and she was proud when they arrived, having not spilled any of it. She carefully got out of the car, paid the driver, and made her way up to the front door. It was a beautiful home, Rose was very impressed. She looked around for somewhere to put the pastries but decided it would be better to just hold them. She lifted her leg, her tongue sticking out the side of her mouth a little, as she used her foot to ring the doorbell.
She prayed that no one saw that.
They even had a dog complete with that dream home. It could be heard barking the instant the doorbell rang. D’Artagnan still wasn’t overly a fan of that. It was hard to get used to. He was at the very least starting to warm up to the puppy itself finally. He picked up the critter as he headed for the door to let his friend inside.
He really hadn’t actually been expecting a coffee delivery, but there she was, and he gave her a faint smile. "Hey. Let me take something? " She had her hands full, and all he had was his wiggly puppy who had finally stopped barking. "Fine fine, get down already. " He said to the squirming lab, releasing him from his arms. He shut the door and ushered her in, taking the pastries in hand so she didn't do everything and hurt herself or something.
The house was large, marble flooring and the works. It was nearly a mansion on the sea. It had gigantic glass windows that showed off their beach view, even the kitchen had one of those islands in the middle.
To be honest, Rose had completely forgotten about the puppy until she heard its yelps from inside the house. She grinned as D’Art opened the door and she walked in, happily handing him the pastries. “Hi! How are you?” Her hands still on the fuller side, she leaned in to give him a kiss on the cheek. “Oh my gosh, I completely forgot about you!” She smiled at the puppy in D’Art’s hands and watched as he set him down. Of course the puppy was very excited to meet a new person and she carefully bent down so he could jump up on her leg. “Hello there! Hello there little one!” It just seemed so easy to slip into that silly, baby kind of talk when speaking to a puppy. She wished her hands were free to play with him, but she didn’t want to take the risk of spilling any of the coffee. She carefully stood back up, a smile for D’Art on her face.
“You have such a beautiful place! Can I come and visit all the time?” She gave him a playful wink, showing she was only joking.
He smiled at her, her energy seemed to be contagious. He’d not been having the greatest day ever before she turned up, he was grateful for the distraction. She was a good person, the puppy seemed to click with her nice and easily. He had learned from a book that when dogs liked people they were generally good at heart. Dogs had a sort of sense about these things. The puppy liked D’Artagnan well enough, but D’Art was still getting used to his presence. He was much more stiff with the critter than Athos was.
He took the other things from her soon enough as well after he greeted her and nodded. “Actually we’d prefer the company, it’s quite a bit large. Gets lonely when one of us has to go to work and the other doesn’t.” He smiled though, he knew he was a bit attached to Athos but he couldn’t help it. “Any time you like, of course you’re invited.” The puppy seemed to approve, trying to trip Rose up in it’s excitement at her feet. “So long as you can stand him.”
Rose followed him into the kitchen, stopping every now and then to stoop down and play with the puppy that kept getting under foot. She didn't mind as she loved giving him the attention he wanted so desperately! She almost missed what D'Art was talking to her about.
"You shouldn't give that sort of invitation! Because John isn't home very often during the day so I get bored and lonely. And with the way things are lately..." She gave D'Art a knowing glance. Of course everyone was aware of the situation, D'Art more than others. "You'll either be enjoying a day off or come home and find me with this beautiful boy!" Her grin turned back down to the puppy, now yapping that he didn't have the attention.
"I think he and I would get along wonderfully! Did you ever figure out a name for him?"
“Bit of an attention whore that one..” He commented with a shrug and raised an eyebrow at her. “John? The roommate?” Though the way she talked of him he seemed like a bit more than just a roommate. D’Art smirked some. “I wouldn’t have a problem with it, but Athos may be confused.” He was amused at the idea though.
“His name is Grimaud. Its a name from the dreams actually.” His crazy weird dreams. D’Artagnan just leaned against the counter for a moment before peering into the pastries. “Do you want to stay here, or head outside? We have a pretty good view of the beach.”
Rose had bent down to give the puppy all the attention again, but looked up at John’s name. “Huh? Oh yeah, my flatmate! Great guy, you should meet him! Wait, have you met him?” Rose tried to think if they had found time to all get together, but figured not. She had first met D’Art during the crazy storm and knew he wasn’t going out too often at the time. “We should all do a dinner sometime. I wanna meet Athos and you can meet John! It’s perfect!” Rose knew how everyone thought she and John were together and she didn’t mind. They were in a sense, but nothing really official. Still, she absolutely adored him and wanted all her friends to get along with him too.
“My home away from home. I might find myself over here more often!” She smiled, liking the idea of having somewhere else to go when things got lonely, but would never want to intrude on her friends.
“Oh right! I remember!” Her attention turned back to the small puppy and she grinned. “Grimaud, that’s such a cute name even if it might have been a servants name that D’Art didn’t take care of in his dreams!” She looked up at D’Art and gave him a silly smile, showing she was just joking around. Another pet and she was standing up again, walking over to the kitchen sink to wash her hands. “Oh, outside, definitely! I love the beach!” She wrung her hands out and looked around for a towel.
“I may have spoken to him once or twice but nothing beyond that. I’m sure Athos wouldn’t mind it. If I’m entirely honest we could start doing things like this a bit more...Couple things. Athos is a private man. It took me quite some time to even get any information out of him once we started dating. I still dunno everything.” That part occasionally bothered D’Artagnan, but that was another story for another time. “Anyway it couldn’t hurt to get him a bit more social. Much as I like having him to myself.” If they were going to do things with other couples it would likely be up to D’Artagnan to arrange it.
He nodded to her remembrance of the puppy. “It’s all right, many people slaughter my own name. Remembering his can be a bit difficult.” He winced, the names people tried to call him at coffee shops. It was the whole reason he came up with D’Art. It was just easier. “All right.” He motioned for her to head to the door, outside on the balcony there were a few dry and clean towels hanging in the sunlight. “There are also some chairs we could drag outside.” He suggested as he opened the large glass door with barely a frame to suggest it’s existence to her.
Rose smiled, excited to think of double dates with her friends. She actually wasn’t sure if John knew her friends, but was eager to have him meet them; they were an important part of her life just as he was, so it would be good to have the two meet. She never worried about first impressions or the like; she knew everyone would get along (or at least thought that she knew). “Well, see if he would be up for doing something this month or next! I’ll only be home a couple days this month, so March might be better?” She made a face, starting to follow him outside.
She seemed a bit startled when D’Art seemed to open the door out of thin air, but settled with the recognition that this house was just brilliant. “Can Grimauld come too?” she glanced back and smiled down at the puppy who had cocked its head to the side, watching the two human interact with each other.
“That sounds good.” He agreed to March, as far as he knew there were no other plans in it, and he lead her outside. The outside was even more impressive, there was a pool surrounded by light (though during the day the lights were off obviously) and just over the pool down a large but climbable hillside was the beach beyond it. The back yard was huge enough for everyone, including the little puppy. They’d set up fencing so the pup couldn’t fall down that hill now, but the view was still amazing.
There was even a wet bar, barbeque and a few chairs all set up. “I was sort of intimidated by this place when we first moved in, I’ll admit-but it’s amazing.” The puppy didn’t even wait for his invite outside with them, he brushed past their feet to go roll in his toys that were sprawled about the yard.
Rose laughed as the puppy raced outside before them, her eyes moving to take in the landscape. She definitely had a look of awe on her face. “The more you show me of your home, the more I want to stay over,” she joked, turning her gaze to look at him. “Did Athos live here by himself before you moved in?” She started to move towards the pool, glancing into the clear water.
“Done any more swimming? Does the puppy like it?”
“You’re welcome to.” He invited. They had large home, he wasn’t against filling it with friends. Actually that sounded like a good idea to him. “He didn’t actually. We..” He winced at the memory that question had brought up briefly. “I lived with him before this in his home, but it was destroyed in one of this city’s freak accidents.” He put up some finger quotes around ‘freak accidents’ and folded his arms uncomfortably. “We picked out this place together actually not long after that.” He still had minor PTSD it seemed from that incident.
“I’ve managed a little floating, but no real swimming yet. I don’t know, I think he’s too young. We mainly keep him away from the pool.” Even it had a small gate around it now that they had the little critter. They’d taken precautions. “Half the time Athos teases me that he actually bought that gate for me.” He rolled his eyes, he wasn’t that clumsy. He wasn’t going to fall in the pool.
“I might actually take you up on that. Good thing we’re friends and Athos seems to like me, yeah?” She gave him a nudge with her shoulder in a joking manner. “Oh, the coffee!” Rose smiled and put a finger up as she walked back in to get them two cups. She had brought some of her own cups and poured coffee in them, adding cream and sugar to hers. “Sugar and cream?” she shouted out the back door, hoping he heard her.
"Yup it'd be awkward having some weirdo show up to use our pool once in a while. " He laughed and nodded as she went room get the forgotten coffees. "Both! " he called back and sank into one of the chairs outside to wait by the pool and catch up.
