Peter was laying in bed, phone in hand as he scrolled up and down through his calendar. He and Caspian had been trying to nail down a date for their wedding and so far all they knew was that they didn’t want to wait long. They’d already been together for ten years so there was no need for a long engagement. However, in order to start properly planning their wedding they needed a date.
Caspian knew he didn’t want to wait more than six months before being married. However, he just didn’t know how to go about setting a date for the wedding, but it needed to get done if they wanted to get moving on their plans. He walked into the room and hopped onto his side of the bed and glanced at Peter’s phone. “What are you thinking?”
“Just trying to figure out a good date for our wedding.” Peter said, glancing over at Caspian for a moment before turning his attention back to his phone, “Do you think the summer is too soon?” He’d been thinking about that for awhile, but wasn’t sure if there was enough time. His family was in England and so were some of their friends from school who they could invite unless they kept it small with only family and close friends they’d made since moving so as not to expect a lot of people to spend a lot of money to come out there.
“Oh, so I’m not going to be your ‘date’ to the wedding?” Caspian questioned, clearly teasing. “But if you do need help, I can do that.” He chuckled and leaned his head against the his fiance’s shoulder. “Summer is not too soon, Peter…” he said, switching topics. “Are you thinking June?” Truth be told, he would marry Peter tomorrow if possible.
Peter couldn’t help but laugh and shook his head, “Not if you keep it up with those jokes.” He smirked and leaned into Caspian as the other man did the same, “I was thinking maybe August? Gives my family enough time to find flights and gives us enough time so that we’re not rushing with the planning.” He turned his head as best he could to see Caspian’s face from the position he was in. “What do you think?” While Peter would definitely marry Caspian in a heartbeat, he also wanted it to be perfect.
That was still about six months away but it was still better than having to wait a year. “August will be fine.” Caspian didn’t really have as many people that he would be inviting. There was his uncle and his aunt but he didn’t have many friends aside from Peter and his family. Still, he had waited this long, and just another 6 months wouldn’t be a big deal. “Look at that, we have a month set...now we need a day.” He gave Peter a soft kiss on the cheek, before glancing to the phone screen.
Peter smiled as Caspian kissed his cheek and he scrolled up and down the month of August, “Well, August first is a Saturday. We could do it then.” It would still be just about six months, but not quite. “Or we could always wait until the very end of the month.” He was teasing cause he knew that Caspian didn’t want to wait any longer than six months.
“Nope!” Caspian responded, right away. “August first, it is!” Then, he plucked the phone from Peter’s hand and quickly entered the ‘event’ of their wedding on the appropriate day. That was one of the joys of having the same kind of phone as his fiance. “Now, there’s something else we need to figure out...the whole last name business.”
Peter hadn’t expected Caspian to take his phone, but when he did, Peter took the opportunity to sit up a little as he watched his fiance typing on his phone. “We should. I was actually looking it up. I guess some same sex couples simply keep using their own last names. There was one couple who picked a name completely different from either of theirs.” He took his phone back once Caspian was finished, “Did you have any suggestions on it?”
“Well, I was thinking I should keep my last name, as I am the only son of my parents...and I would like the name to be carried on...but I would like to have your families last name...since they have always been a better family than my uncle.” He let out a sigh and shrugged. “I just...don’t really know what I would prefer...so I was hoping you could help out.”
Peter nodded as he thought about it, “Well, we could always hyphenate.” He suggested, watching Caspian for his response to it, “At the same time, we don’t need to decide on the name thing right now. We still have time for that. But I completely understand the predicament you’re in and I think your parents would be proud that you want to make sure that your name lives on.” He leaned over and pressed a kiss to Caspian’s temple.
“I thought about the hyphenation thing…,” Hell, Caspian had thought this over more than was necessary, already. “I just really don’t know what to do about it. And I would rather have it figured out so I can focus on more important things, you know? Like what kind of cake we should get.”
“Do you not like the idea of hyphenating?” He wanted to make sure that they were both on the same page with everything that had to do with the wedding and most importantly their marriage, because once the wedding was over they would be married forever.
“I do and I don’t. I get that it’s a way to share both our names...but I also just want to share the same last name as you. To prove that we are indeed...united. I have been overthinking this…” Caspian gave a shrug and leaned back against the bed.
Setting his phone aside on the bedside table, Peter moved so that he was laying beside Caspian, one hand moving up and down his torso soothingly, “I don’t think you’ve been overthinking this. It’s a logical thing to be thinking about.” Peter thought for a moment before speaking again, “If you were to take my last name, when we have children, we could give a boy your last name as their middle name.”
Caspian let his own hand find Peter’s before he answered. “That could work. Although, if my uncle does decide to show up to the wedding, he will have a fit about me taking your last name. Although, he will have a fit about us getting married, anwyay...so I guess that won’t matter.” He let out a sigh and squeezed Peter’s hand gently. “Do you want me to take your last name?”
Peter turned his hand and laced his fingers with Caspian’s as he met his gaze, “I do, but only if you do too. I don’t want to make you do anything.” Caspian had already expressed wanting to take Peter’s last name, but he wanted to be a hundred percent sure.
“You wouldn’t be making me do anything, you know. I just want to know what you want…” Caspian wanted Peter to be happy with his decision as well, and it would be rude if he didn’t ask the man’s thoughts on the matter. “I’m not saying it will influence my decision, but I do like making you happy.” He gave a small smirk and brought Peter’s hand to his lips for a light kiss.
“I know,” Peter said, smiling as Caspian kissed his hand, “But in order for this to work we have to be on the same page. I’d be honored though, if you took my last name.” And he knew that his father would also be honored if Caspian took their last name. “Caspian Pevensie. It has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?”
It was rather nice to hear the name roll off of his fiance’s tongue. Caspian smiled and turned to look at Peter. He’d be lying if he hadn’t said the name to himself, a few times. It did have a certain ring to it. “It does,” he agreed. “And I do like hearing you say it.”
