When: 18 February 2015, night
Where: Alley way to Svetlana's apartment
Warnings: Violence
Status: Thread | In progress

Svetlana didn’t like how much crime there was going on. It reminded her of Moscow where people often would pay the mafia so that they were protected. It was something she didn’t do, but she knew it was a risk not to. After all, there were still parts of the country where the mafia ran everything. So the fact that she was seeing such crime here? It made her uneasy. It didn’t stop her, not at all. She had survived there and would survive here. The uneasiness though? No.

But she had received a call from Nadiya, one of the girls she’d been helping recently from a near by shelter. Nadiya had recently gotten her own apartment and had been so excited about starting over. Then it changed. She had seen the man who had brought her to America in the first place and was scared. Scared of being taken again and once again sold. While Svetlana had told her to call the police, the girl had refused, saying that Svetlana was the only one she trusted and if she could just come over.

As she had just been reading when the call came in, the blonde had decided that she would go and make sure Nadiya was okay. Help calm her down and then they could make a plan from there. So she had grabbed her bag, her jacket and keys and had started the walk to Nadiya’s apartment. Perhaps it wasn’t the smartest thing to be out walking like this at night, but she knew she could defend herself.

Until she felt herself grabbed into an alley. Biting the hand that had covered her mouth, Svetlana had moved to run only to run into a body.

“Not so fast.”

Eyes narrowing, Svetlana gripped her keys through her knuckles as if they were claws, ready to strike.

This crime wave unsettled Anatoly, if only because he certainly wasn’t the fighter type. He had no formal training in self-defense methods. So needless to say he was careful in walking around was an understatement. As much as he could, he did his best to not lose himself too much in thought. Which was far easier said than done, really. After all, he tended to get lost in his head more often than not when he wasn’t focusing on work or visiting with his sister.

As it was, he was managing to pay attention to his surroundings as he saw someone get pulled into an alley up ahead. He blinked a bit, at first uncertain if he’d actually seen what he’d just seen. Deciding it was better to investigate given the current state of things, he headed for that alley.

And when he got there, he of course didn’t like what he saw. So those men thought they could have their way with the woman? Not if he could help it.

“Why don’t you pick on someone your own size?” Anatoly said in the most gruff tone of voice he could muster. But Anatoly was the least threatening person in the world. While he had height on his side, he was all gangly limbs and floppy curly hair. Needless to say as much as he tried to make himself look menacing, he really just looked like a toothless puppy trying to be a full-grown pitbull.

Svetlana was unimpressed with all of this. As she felt the man start try to feel her up, she lashed out, the keys slashing across his face, which he clearly didn’t like.

“You bitch!”

Getting shoved back into another man, Svetlana’s eyes narrowed only for a voice to tell them to pick on someone their own size. It sounded familiar but it was dark, the blonde’s adrenaline was pumping and she wasn’t really in a trying to place voices mode at the moment. There was a question she was going to need to ask herself, if Nadiya had gotten pulled back in and this was a set up. But she wouldn’t worry about that right now. Right now, it was surviving.

With the one man going after the intruder, the other had her in a vice grip. Well that was just lovely. At least she had grown up with three brothers. Not that they had ever rough housed like this but it at least gave her some idea on what to do. Stomping down on the foot with her heel, the makeshift claws were used to attack the groin area, elbow to the gut.

Which ended up with her getting shoved aside and ankle twisting painfully as she fell. Dammit.

It was dark and Anatoly couldn't quite see who the woman was, but he didn't need to know who it was to step in and help. He definitely wasn't a fighter, but he wasn't about to just sit there and watch some innocent person get overpowered by a couple of assholes.

And one of said assholes was coming after him. Oh. Right. Fighting. Yes, he needed to do that. The first swing the guy took, Anatoly somehow managed to duck and he returned the favor by socking the guy in the stomach. At least his days of having been bullied on the playground because of his funny accent had given him some amount of knowledge in this.

Though his triumph was short-lived as he received a fist to his face, the knuckles landing squarely on his cheekbone. Grunting, Anatoly stumbled back a step or two, but he wasn't about to let these assholes get the better of him or the woman. So the gangly man lashed out a bit awkwardly, landing a somewhat meager punch to the man's shoulder. In any other circumstance, the man he hit or anyone watching could've laughed at his effort. But currently, it seemed to only be garnering more anger from the guy.

"I'll show you what we do to people who get between us and what we want!"

Well. Alright, that was a threat and the man lunged at Anatoly.

While the one man went after Anatoly, the other was stalking towards Svetlana as she struggled to get up. Yeah. Her ankle was definitely sprained and it hurt. She knew that she shouldn't be putting any weight on it but she also wasn't about to let this creep do whatever he had planned for her. Oh look. A two-by-four. If she could just lift it up....

"Rot in hell."

The comment was growled in Russian as Svetlana used all her strength to swing the 2x4 and knock the assailant to the ground. Looking around, she found something and threw it at the one heading towards Anatoly, catching his attention. Only for police sirens to go by. That seemed to catch the two thugs' attention.

Breathing heavily, Svetlana slid down against the brick wall, wincing in pain. That could have been a lot worse. But as it was her and her attempted knight, the blonde just looked to him and quirked a brow..

"Are you okay?"

And back to English it was as she wasn't exactly sure who it was nor did she speak Russian often since being in the States. Mostly if one of the girls spoke Russian or she was talking with family.

It certainly was fortuitous that police sirens had gone by at that precise point in time. The men cut their losses and got out of there before they could get arrested.

Which was all perfectly fine with Anatoly. He wasn't a fighter despite his attempts. He'd certainly have a nice bruise on his cheek from the punch he had taken, but he was otherwise fine. In a delayed reaction, he suddenly thought he'd heard the woman say something in Russian. But it had been difficult to tell, and he was just going to chalk that up to his attention being focused solely on the man that had been coming after him and not having heard the woman clearly enough.

However, he heard her question to him loud and clear. Now that they were free of their assailants, Anatoly drew in a breath and let himself relax a bit as he turned to go over to the woman.

"I'll have a bruise, but I'm fine. Are you alright?" He asked as he knelt down and then...finally saw who it was. He blinked a bit, not having expected it to be Svetlana of all people. Well. That just. Suddenly made Anatoly a bit awkward.

Really, of all the people it could have been, Svetlana had not been expecting Anatoly. She could only blink some as her mind processed just who had come to her aide. It wasn't as if she thought he was a horrible person, far from it. As a general rule, she liked him. He was awkward and yet still had tried to ask her out a few times in the year she had been there. She just hadn't anticipated it being him. He wasn't exactly a fighter.

"Dr. Sergievsky."

Which would then lead to the normal You can call me Anatoly or some variation of it. But she was in a bit too much shock at the moment to really care and just went with instinct.

"Yes, I'm fine..."

Trying to push herself up, the blonde gasped as her ankle gave way under her and she had to grab onto something (this time Anatoly's arm) to keep from falling. So much for that plan. Well, this just got a bit more awkward. As if it hadn't been already. Somewhere, she was sure Dmitri was grinning because he enjoyed her torment.

Well he just had a knack for this sort of appearing suddenly and unexpectedly thing. Not really, but Anatoly definitely had something happening when it came to Svetlana. The dreamer in him liked to think these chance encounters meant something. But that only served to make him utterly strange to people. Mostly to Svetlana, but that was neither here nor there.

"You can call me Anatoly," he said gently. Not that he was expecting her to really make the adjustment right this second after the fight. But it was just a gentle reminder. Plus it at least saved him from making some silly and ill-timed awkward comment otherwise.

Anatoly was about to say something in response when Svetlana's ankle gave way and she grabbed onto his arm. He instinctively stiffed his arm, his other hand moving to help steady her. Luckily for them both, his hand made contact with her shoulder and not some place that would undoubtedly result in him getting another bruise to some part of his anatomy. Even if the contact would've been accidental.

Anyway. He turned his attention to her ankle. Not that he could diagnose it as he wasn't a medical doctor nor could he actually see the ankle completely from here, but it was obvious that was the problem.

"That should be looked at," he said, again in that gentle tone of his. Because stating the obvious was his forte.

Where Anatoly was a dreamer and seemed to think their run ins had something to do with...something, Svetlana was not. She was analytical and didn't put much stock into destiny or fate. Everyone made their own destiny by the choices they made. Coincidences were just that, coincidences. Don't open up, don't get your hopes up and you don't end up hurt later on.

And there was the reminder that she could call him Anatoly. Though it was definitely a better response to whatever else he might come up with that would just make her look at him oddly. It was a familiar rapport between them, and she didn't actually mind it. It was just how they were.

"Right, of course."

However, she was still in a daze and trying to get her senses back that she didn't pay all that much mind to actually calling him Anatoly. Even as he steadied her. Really, placement and timing was everything. Because while the shoulder was a safe place to instinctually grasp, it hurt given the whole being thrown into the wall thing. So she winced but sighed.

"I'm sure it's just a sprain. I have bandages at home." It was always safer to have things at home. If one of the girls she helped needed immediate assistance and was too afraid to go to the hospital, there were the necessities and she could patch them up. True it wasn't exactly her job to take girls into her home to bandage them up, but it was a matter of trust. Trust which might have been why she'd been lured out there.
