Who: Peeta & Rose
What: Surprise Visit
When: Late January
Where: Mellarky Bakery
Rating: Low
Status: Complete upon posting!
Peeta was probably one of the nicest people Rose had ever met and she was devastated to find that he had one of the most nightmarish dreams she had heard from the network. No one deserved to remember something like that, least of all Peeta. She had hoped that with time the dreams would get better, but it didn’t look that way. The best case scenario seemed he would either die and not have to dream any more or he would live at the end of it all; neither seemed like a good choice that Rose wanted for him.
She had promised him a surprise visit and found some time after she had gotten back from her last trip. She gathered a few supplies with her, a kind of feel better gift. She brought along a few books that Troy had recommended, hoping he liked to read and that would help him sleep better. Maybe he would find one he liked more and would dream of that instead. She also brought some cookies (store bought as she didn’t want to try and make them without Will’s help), candy, and tea. Just little things that might make his day a little brighter.
The ride wasn’t too long before she was walking through the door, hoping to see his face. “Peeta?”
The dreams were pretty terrible even though he hadn’t dreamt about his actual time inside the Hunger Games, but they were starting to mix with his PTSD and causing all sorts of other problems. He wasn’t sleeping very well and starting to debate if he wanted to go to a doctor to get some medicinal help in that department. But for now he was just taking it day by day and enjoying the days when he didn’t dream about the strange new country of Panem. Thankfully he was busy with work as more people were coming in to start booking him to make their cakes for their spring weddings.
The idea of Rose coming to surprise him wasn’t on his mind today as he was kneeling down below the counter to put away some new supplied that came in. He heard his name called from the door and he quickly stood up and smacked his head on the counter above him. He cursed under his breath as he stood up properly and rubbed his head, “Oh hey Rose!” He couldn’t help but give her a smile even though his head was throbbing slightly.
Rose winced as she heard the bang, giving him a sympathetic smile as she saw him appear. “Heya Peeta. Alright?” She walked over to the counter and slid the small basket over to him. “I thought I would surprise you today! So...surprise!” She lifted her arms up over her head in a sort of celebration. “I brought you a little basket of things to help with the dreams. A book,” she pointed to it in the basket, “so maybe you can fall asleep while reading it and you don’t have to worry about dreams!” It sounded like a long shot, but she figured he could at least try if interested. “I heard it’s a pretty good book, a friend recommended it to me. I hear the author is amazing!” She had given him ‘Neverwhere’ by Neil Gaiman. “I haven’t read it, but...well, we could read it together?” She gave a small shrug of her shoulders, continuing to point out the contents of the basket. “Plus a few snacks I thought you would enjoy. Nothing fancy or that I really had to make...I didn’t wanna poison you!” She beamed at him, leaning on the counter. She propped her chin up with the palm of her hand, looking at him.
“How are you doing? Anymore of your nightmares?”
“Wow, Rose, this is really awesome of you. Can’t believe you got all this for me,” He couldn’t help but blush at the kindness that he was being shown. It was very sweet of her and he was glad that he had made such a good friend already. He took the basket from her and looked through the different things with a grin, “And I like to read, so I’ll definitely read this one. We can totally read together and discuss it if you want. And I’m sure something you cook isn’t that horrible. I can always help teach you how to cook some things if you need to learn.” He wasn’t shy about offering to help people. He had done it numerous times over his short life and he thought he was a pretty good at teaching people.
“I’m good and not at the moment. They’ve decided to take a bit of a break right now, so hopefully it will be a bit? I’m really not looking forward to having anymore. You?”
She couldn’t help but beam as he went through the basket. Even though they didn’t hang out as much as her and her other friends, she still considered him a very good friend. She hated the thought of the things he had to dream about and would do anything to try and distract him from it. “I’ve heard it’s great! I can definitely try and read it with you, but I’ll be honest, I’m a slow reader! Although I definitely need something else to do while I’m sitting in the airports…” She had never thought of bringing a book with her, as strange as that was. Now that she had said it outloud, it seemed a very logical thing to do!
“Actually yeah let’s do it! And then I can text you and be like ‘wtf?’” She laughed, knowing that was something she would do. “And I can always use help cooking! Actually, I haven’t tried baking yet and that seems right up your alley! I don’t want you to feel like I’m trying to steal your best kept secrets though.” She gave him a playful wink. “But if you ever wanna share them, I would love to learn!”
She straightened up, stretching, but leaned back down to be on level with Peeta. She smiled, happy to hear that the dreams hadn’t come back for him...yet. “Good,” she said, really meaning it. “I hope you go months and months without having them! I saw someone on the network say it’s been six months since they had a dream! Maybe you’ll have the same lucky.” She reached out to take one of his hands and gave it a squeeze.
“No dreams on my end,” she said, retracting her hand again, her arms crossed to help support her against the counter. “And guess what? The Doctor from my dream is here! I met him the other day! But he hasn’t started dreaming yet and I freaked out on him, so he thinks I’m completely mental.” She shook her head, still unbelieving she had acted in that way. “Hopefully he’ll understand when he starts to dream!”
“That’s totally fine if you’re slow. I promise I’ll check with you first to see where you are in the book and make sure I don’t give away any spoilers if I ended up further along than you. But reading is a great way to pass time in the airport and it’s so easy to just throw a book in your carry on and off you go,” he agreed with her. He wasn’t sure what he had done to get Rose Tyler to be such a good friend so quickly, but he was certainly thankful for it. He was a little anti-social sometimes when he wanted to be and with these dreams he would need more happy distractions in his life.
“Don’t worry, I know how to cook and to bake, so I’ve got you completely covered,” his cooking skills weren’t as sharp as his baking skills, but he could still do it. He cooked himself dinner every night, so it wasn’t like he never put them to use. He just baked a lot more than cooked during the day. He would be happy to teach her whatever she wanted to learn. And he knew that the lessons would be a lot of fun because she always managed to make things more interesting.
“Oh really? That’s awesome. So you’ve finally met The Doctor and he had no idea who you were? That part kind of sucks, but that’s great that you finally got to meet him. And I’m sure he’ll think you’re mental for a brief period of time before he starts to dream, which I’m sure will happen. I mean it has to, right?” Peeta wasn’t sure how that sort of thing happened, but it seemed like if you saw someone from your dreams in this place then they were most likely dreaming or going to dream the same thing as you. He hadn’t seen anyone from his dreams yet, but there were others who were involved in his dream world that he had met.
Rose laughed, but nodded her head. “You promise that now, but lemme tell you, I might really be that slow! But I’m definitely down to try it! I’ve been wanting to try and read a little bit more.” She wasn’t sure who had actually motivated her more to read; she seemed to have a lot of friends who either excelled or even taught literature. It had never been a passion for Rose, but she felt like turning a new page (literally) to try out something new. Besides, as Peeta had pointed out, reading while waiting for her next flight was the perfect solution! “I’ll have to go find a copy for myself now! Really, you might get a couple of texts from me going ‘can you believe this part?’” She grinned, wondering if she would actually get that involved in a book.
“Well one friend has taught me somewhat how to cook. He taught me a lasagna which came out pretty good, but I think that’s because he was there to help me with all the steps. We’ll see how I do when I’m on my own! But if you wouldn’t mind helping me bake something, then I’ll have all three courses down!” Rose wasn’t sure when she would cook for John, but she began to think before her trip with Amy. She knew John didn’t know much about Valentine’s, and while their label still remained up in the air, she knew she wanted to do something special with him. Maybe she’d surprise him one day and just have everything set for him.
Rose smiled and nodded her head. “I hope it happens soon! I mean...he’ll get memories of why he acted a certain way and I have so many questions!” Mostly, Rose was beginning to feel torn about her feelings with him. The only two dreams she had made her feel uncomfortably close to how her relationship with John was playing out. She had just met this Doctor and already felt so devoted to him, so...in love? No, not quite that, but something fairly close. She knew she wanted to stay by his side, no matter the craziness that seemed to come from it. Sure, they had their arguments, but in the end, she didn’t want to leave him.
Almost reading his mind, she nodded her head at him. “There’s no one here that’s from your terrible dream world is there?” Another lining in an otherwise dark cloud. If there were other people here, at least they could come together and support each other through the dreams.
“The people I’ve dreamt about I haven’t seen yet. But there’s a couple people who are from the same place as me, but don’t live where I do. I’ve seen their Hunger Games on tv and all three of them have won, which lead me to believe that something bad was going to happen to me. And of course, I was picked for the Hunger Games as well. But I’ve become friends with those guys as well, so at least we all completely understand what it’s like to go through this stuff,” Peeta was glad that he had met those three because he knew he was going to need people to talk to once the actual dreams started.
“You’re going to bombard that poor man with a million questions once he starts dreaming, aren’t you? I can totally imagine that you have them all written down in a notebook and you’re going to convince him to meet you for coffee and then open up your notebook,” Peeta was teasing her but that totally seemed like something she would do. It was probably a good thing because it would nice to get answers about things you were confused by in the dreams. He wished he could talk to other people that had dreams, maybe someone in the Capitol, and figure out what the hell was up with the Hunger Games.
“But let me know when you want me to come over and give you some lessons and I’ll make sure to clear my schedule.”
Rose almost gave a sigh of relief when he mentioned having people here from his dreams. She didn’t wish for others to have to go through that, but for Peeta to not have to go through that alone. “Almost like a support group huh?” She tried to give him a small smile, but wondered if it was the inappropriate time to. “Well, as wrong as this sounds, I’m glad you have other people you can talk to about it.” She gave him a squeezed smile, trying to show as much support as she could. Really, she couldn’t even fathom what Peeta might have been going through with his dreams. Just the few things he had told her about them made a shiver run through her just thinking about it. Just dreams...no matter how real they feel.
She glanced over at him and laughed, nodding her head. “Yeah, probably will,” she said, giving him a playful shove. “How do you know me so well already?” She gave him a bright grin. “And I have started a journal, but I dunno if I would actually bring that with me to ask him questions.” She thought about it, biting the inside of her bottom lip. “Actually, I’m gonna try my best not/i> to throw all these questions at him. I remember my first dream and it’s a lot to take in, even with all the preparation of getting one eventually. I’m sure his will be a little more overwhelming than mine.” She couldn’t imagine dreaming of actually being an alien.
“This month will be hard,” she said, pulling out her phone to look at the calendar. “I’m actually only going to be home for eight days this month.” She made a face. “I asked for a week long vacation so they decided to really work me this month! But we’ll definitely be able to fit in some time, I’m sure!” As Rose got to know Peeta more and more, she knew he was going to be the kind of friend she would always make time for, even if she only had a day or two back in the area.
“Last minute planning alright?”
He completely understood her sympathy with that. It was terrible to dream about the Hunger Games period, but he knew it would be better to have others to compare experiences with than just dealing with it all alone. It was a built in support group to make sure that none of them went completely crazy, but it was already starting. Annie seemed to be having an incredibly hard time dealing with it and Peeta knew things were going to get tough for him the moment he started dreaming about that. “Exactly like a support group. They’re all really great people, so I’m glad I get to know them period.”
“You just strike me as the type to write down things you want to know. Like if you find something strange in a book or article you’re reading and you want to look it up later. You have a thirst for knowledge and want to explore the world around you. Which being a flight attendant is a really good job for you, despite having some crazy work hours this week,” Peeta pointed out with a laugh as he was shoved and grinned at her, “And you should definitely give him a few dreams to figure out his situation before you ask him all that. Maybe see if he posts about an adorable blonde girl named Rose and then you can pounce.”
“And I still can’t believe you’re working that much. You sure you want to be away from here all that time? I get it though if you want to work a lot and make money. You certainly have an interesting job, so I would want to keep doing it. I’m just surprised you won’t be around. But we can certainly plan something for a day you’re back. Just let me know when you want it to happen and I’ll clear my schedule for you.”
Rose smiled, happy to hear that the group seemed to be doing some good for Peeta. It wasn’t the ideal situation, but better to have knowing people around that could help if something bad happened. Rose had heard of bad dreams before, but this was a whole new level of bad. “Good that you guys all get along! Hopefully you guys don’t have to vent too often?” Rose knew how people dreamed at different rates and hoped Peeta’s would spread themselves out, to be less intense.
Rose couldn’t help but beam at Peeta as he gave her the compliments. “Well you know how to make a girl blush,” she joked, even if there might have been a bit of truth to it. “How can you make something as crazy as writing down questions to our dreams sound as charming as going out for a spot of tea?” She placed her chin in her head, looking up at him with complete abandon. She sighed though, looking away and nodding her head. “But you’re right. I can’t overwhelm him now, just gotta let him dream at his own and know that I’m here if he needs someone to talk to about them. Right?” She glanced at him, almost looking for reassurance on the matter. She couldn’t help but feel trapped in the situation. She knew what the right thing to do was, but found it hard to actually do it.
“Part is play, part is work. I’ll be upset from being away from everyone, but I think it’ll be a great opportunity!” She glanced at him, giving him a small smile. There was something nice about having someone miss her and she realized the sentiment was returned. “I’ll text ya while I’m gone! And you’ll be the first person I text when I get home!” She grinned, thinking that she had something to look forward to when she got back home.
“We should do something different...like bowling or mini golf! Whattya say?”
“I hope we don’t have to vent a lot. And I manage to make it charming because it kind of is. It’s not absolutely insane, but at least you’re not standing outside his window with a pair of binoculars or something,” Peeta pointed out to her with a laugh and listened to her explain that she couldn’t overwhelm him. He was glad that she had figured that part out and hopefully the two of them would be able to create a kinship when the Doctor began to remember her and what was going on in his life, “And yes, that’s exactly what you’re going to do. It’s the proper way to go about this and he’ll appreciate you more if you allow it to happen naturally.”
“And I feel quite special if I am the first person you text when you get back into town. And bowling sounds like fun. I haven’t done that in a very long time,” He wasn’t sure if his prosthetic leg could handle something like that, but he was more than willing to try. He would probably trip over himself a few times. He was about to say more when one of his employees called out for him to come answer a phone call, “Crap, I better go do that. Rose, thank you so so much for this basket and the visit. You’re fantastic.”
Rose smiled and nodded her head. She just needed to talk to Peeta more whenever she felt like caving and going a bit mental when it came to talking to Daniel about the dreams. “You can be like my conscious,” she said, joking. “Make sure I don’t go too crazy in terms of the dreams and eagerness!”
She glanced behind Peeta when his name was called and pushed herself off the counter, giving him a wave goodbye. “I’ll text you later! Enjoy the treats!” She grinned, watching him go back to work before walking out the door.
