Jeremy had no idea what he was going to do about the whole Hunter thing. He’d had part of a dream a few nights before where he’d woken up in the dream to find that he’d whittled stakes at some point throughout the night and when he’d woken up for real, he’d found that he’d done the same thing. It scared and worried him, because the next thing would be dreams about killing vampires and then who knew what would happen after that. At least, he’d wondered that until he’d had the rest of the dream. He’d tried to kill Elena. Stefan brought a vampire to him for him to kill in order to grow his Mark, but all it had done was spur on his increasing urges to kill vampires, which had led him to almost killing Elena. Something that had upset him greatly when he’d woken up that morning.
He’d thought about skipping class, but he had a test coming up that he needed to take notes for so skipping was out of the question. He’d woken up late as a result of the dreams so while he’d wanted to call Myrcella right away, he’d known that she was on her way to her own classes and he was gonna be late and didn’t want to make her late, so he’d decided to wait and call her when he got out of class.
He was currently crossing campus, heading towards his next class, which he still had about a half an hour until.
Caroline had some time between her classes so of course she was going to spend it in Nik’s office. Perks of having a Professor for a boyfriend and all. She was well on her way there when a familiar face caught her attention. Jeremy. Caroline honestly couldn’t even remember the last time she had seen the younger Gilbert. Even with them going to the same college, the campus was large and Caroline was a busy girl.
“Jeremy! Hey!” she called out with a wave already making her way over to him. Nik could wait. She wanted to catch up with Jeremy for a bit, of course she had always been closer with Elena and Katherine too, but she had also grown up with Jeremy.
With everything going on with the dreams and the Hunter’s Mark, Jeremy had almost forgotten that Caroline also went to the same school, so hearing her voice, Jeremy stopped, his head snapping up towards her, “Caroline….hi.” He ran a hand through his hair, scratching at the back of his head nervously. Caroline was a vampire and he was a Hunter. Or in the dreams he was. Either way, he didn’t want to risk being around Caroline for too long, “Uh, what’s up?” He didn’t want to just blow her off, because she would likely talk to Elena and then his sister would worry about him and ask him what was going on.
Was it just her or was Jeremy acting a little…off? Oh well she wouldn’t pry. “Not much,” she replied in her usual cheerful voice, warm smile plastered on her face. “Just have some time before my next class. What about you? I feel like I haven’t seen you in like forever.” She really should try and make it a point to see him more, especially considering they went to the same school now and all. Wasn’t he friends with Anna or something too? Wouldn’t be that hard to have the occasional lunch together. “What have you been up to?”
“Not much. You?” Yeah, Jeremy was nervous. He was nervous because this was the first time, since he’d woken up with the Hunter’s Mark, that he’d been around a vampire and he was worried about what might happen. It was still strange to think that someone he’d known his whole life was now a vampire. “Am I keeping you from being somewhere else? Cause if I am then I can let you go. It’s not a problem.” As he spoke, he was so focused on trying to think of an excuse to get away from Caroline that he didn’t realize that his hand was moving towards the flap of his bag where other than his books, he’d put one of the stakes he’d somehow whittled in his sleep.
“Just the usual. Classes, cheer, work. Trying to have some sort of social life.” She had no clue what was up with Jeremy, but that wasn’t going to stop her from acting like her usual self. “Hey, did you end up making the baseball team?” she was pretty sure he had mentioned that to her at some point. “Oh, don’t worry about it. I was just going to see Nik for a bit before my next class, but I see him all the time. I’m not keeping you from class or something am I?” maybe that was why Jeremy was acting so strange.
Jeremy listened, nodding, his hand sliding into his bag. “I decided not to try out this year. Figured I’d spent my freshman year getting used to college.” And if he was honest, baseball was the last thing Jeremy had been thinking of lately. “And no. I still have some time before my next class.” As he spoke, he glanced around to see if anyone was around, but they happened to be in a somewhat secluded area of the campus where not a lot of people walked through. “I should probably go though.” His fingers wrapped around the stake, sweat beading up on his forehead. Despite saying he should go, Jeremy took a step or two closer to Caroline.
“Yeah that’s a good idea. Not always best to have too much going on. Grades tend to suffer.” Ooops.
“Well I won’t keep you then,” Caroline replied still unsure why Jeremy was acting suspicious and kind of paranoid with all his glancing around and just what was he reaching for in his backpack? “Are you sure you are okay though?” she didn’t back away when he came closer, why would she? It was just Jeremy.
As Jeremy stood there, watching Caroline he couldn’t help but think about how she was a monster despite the fact that he’d known her practically his entire life. She was a monster who was capable of killing without a second thought and she needed to be exterminated. “You’re a monster.” Jeremy knew what Caroline’s father had tried to do to her in the dreams and part of him wished that he had succeeded. Taking another step closer, he pulled the stake out of his bag. The stake with the signia of The Five carved into it. “And I can’t let you hurt anyone.”
Deep down he knew this was wrong, but he couldn’t stop himself as he lunged at Caroline, his bag forgotten on the ground now.
What the hell? Where did that come from? Not that it wasn’t anything Caroline hadn’t thought about herself since she had turned. It had taken her awhile to accept what she was and now Jeremy was throwing it back in her face? Then it hit her. Jeremy was a hunter in the dreams. He hated vampires, even his friends, even his sister. That could explain his odd behavior.
However, before she could fully process it all and respond he was coming at her with a fucking stake. Caroline’s vampire instincts took over, fangs out face transformed without her even having time to think. She pushed Jeremy away, he flew back a few feet, but Caroline immediately felt back and ran over to him. “Jeremy! I’m sorry! Are you okay?” she asked bending down by his side checking to make sure he wasn’t seriously injured, she didn’t smell any blood so that was a good sign.
“I am, but you’re not going to be,” Unlike in the dream, Jeremy only had the one stake so he needed to make the best of it or risk failing. When Caroline came close to make sure he was alright, he reached up quickly and grabbed a handful of her hair, ignoring any protesting muscles from the fall he had just taken. He wrapped the golden strands around his hand to try and keep her from getting away and brought his other arm around, stake still in hand, aiming for her heart.
Unlike the time Nik had pulled her hair to get her to stop biting him, the pull from Jeremy actually hurt and she couldn’t seem to break free of his grasp. “Jeremy stop!” she protested placing both her hands on his chest to try and push him back down. But her vampire strength didn’t seem to be working. Fuck. He must have gotten his damn hunter’s strength and he was still coming at her with a damn stake. “Jeremy!” she pleaded as she continued to try and break free of his grasp. No such luck. For the first time since Caroline felt real fear that she might actually die.
He was so close to making his first kill and somewhere in the back of his mind he wondered if the Mark would grow like it had in the dreams when he’d killed the vampire Stefan had brought him. There was no cure, that he knew of, in real life, so would the Mark react the same way to a kill? There really was only one way to find out. As he brought his arm around, he turned his body at the same time to knock Caroline onto her back which in turn brought him to sit on top of her, knees on either side of her body as he brought the stake down.
Then, as if by a bloody goddamn miracle, a third presence made itself known - another person that may give Jeremy the vibe of monster, but not quite yet. The transition was there, festering, already bothering his skin during the sunlight, his human appetite slowly diminishing and becoming the liquid variety.
And, well...as for the strength…
It wasn’t exactly a supernatural vampiric level yet, but when Klaus’ hands grasped Jeremy’s shoulders, fingers digging painfully into them, he ripped him off Caroline with a disturbing amount of power for someone who was still supposed to be human. There wasn’t anything vampiric about his features yet - no veins, no golden wolf eyes to expose the slumbering hybrid inside him - but he’d been running on adrenaline, a simmering beastly instinct that had stirred and started to become alive.
“Little Gilbert,” he seethed, using Katherine’s old beloved nickname. Lips curled back into a scowl - the perfect opportunity for fangs to emerge, but none came out yet. “Best you step back and respect the lady, because the next time my hands are going on you, it’ll be to rip your fucking throat out.”
No more Mister Nice Nik. This was the Klaus Mikaelson of the dreams, slowly surfacing, threatening even without him being a full-blown bastard monster.
What the fuck just happened? Caroline’s head was spinning. Jeremy had almost staked her. Nik had pulled him off. That was all that was clear to her at the moment.
She sat up, her vampire features still on her face from the attack. Eyes flitted back and forth between Jeremy and Nik. How the hell did Nik do that? She couldn’t even get Jeremy off of her. “Where did you-? How did you-?” There was something Nik wasn’t telling her but now wasn’t the time to focus on that.
Snapping back into the moment Caroline got up from the ground. “Let’s go,” she said to Nik not really paying much attention to whatever the hell he had been saying to Jeremy. All she knew was she needed to get the hell away from him before he attacked her again. If Nik wasn’t there she would have sped off already. The last thing she wanted was to hurt Jeremy, or well second to last. Last thing she wanted was for him to succeed in staking her.
The last thing Jeremy had expected was to be forcibly pulled off of Caroline, the stake sliding across the grass as he was Klaus removed him. At the same time, he snapped out of it and stared at Klaus, dark eyes wide. It had happened much easier than in the dreams, which could always be as a result of him being a Hunter was dream related and not something that actually existed in the real world. Whatever the reason, he suddenly had no urge to hurt Caroline, but he didn’t think Klaus would care about that right now.
“Shit, Caroline….I’m so sorry….” He couldn’t believe he had almost killed Caroline and if Klaus hadn’t shown up, he would have. “I don’t know…”
“You’re becoming a hunter,” was Klaus’ explanation, the bloodlust slightly eased, but there was still a rage that simmered underneath. It was easy to succumb to the desire of snapping his goddamn neck for what he had just walked into, but he also knew the possible consequence and he wouldn’t test the waters. The Hunter’s Curse was no fucking joke, and he had fifty years to experience the kind of torment killing a hunter brought. “An unfortunate development when everyone you know is a fucking vampire.”
His sympathy for Jeremy was lacking, however, and his eyes carried his gaze over to Caroline. The one on the receiving end of a pointed stake, the one that could have become an ashy pale and death. “Are you alright?”
Now that things were calming down a bit Caroline’s features returned to normal. No more fangs or red eyes. She wasn’t sure exactly how to respond to Jeremy. Attacking her wasn’t okay and she wasn’t about to lie and say it was just because he was apologizing now. Not to mention that she didn’t want to get too close to him in case he snapped back into Hunter mode again. “Let’s not do that again,” she finally replied. “It’s probably best if we keep our distance till you stop hating all vampires.” They weren’t all evil after all. She definitely wasn’t evil.
“I’m fine,” she lied to Nik, her voice a bit shaky from the whole encounter. “Thank you,” she added, even managed to give him a small smile. He did just save her life after all.
Jeremy nodded, still a little shaky and got to his feet, searching for his bag, “Right. I should get going. I’ve...I’ve got a class.” He wanted to apologize again, but he was also worried about hurting Caroline again and he didn’t want to tempt fate with Klaus there, who would surely not hesitate in ripping his heart out if he hurt Caroline. Grabbing his bag, he slung it over his shoulder then started to leave when he spotted the stake. He contemplated picking it up, but had a feeling that Klaus would stop him, so he simply left it there and walked away, but not in the direction of his next class. He had to call Myrcella.
He hadn’t believed Caroline’s declaration of ‘being fine’ one bit - but the sentiment to be reassuring was still rather appreciated. It did nothing to really ease his own irritation through all this, however, but he’d bite his tongue and behave. Klaus had the urge for a murderous tendency or two and he needed to eliminate the yearn for it now. This was Elena’s brother.
He’ll piss off a lot of people if he even accidentally snapped his neck dead.
Klaus snorted when he left and grabbed Caroline by the elbow, the gesture gentle despite the show of strength. “Let’s go, love. I’ll drive.”
Caroline felt a little bad, wanting to comfort Jeremy. Becoming a hunter was probably just as scary for him as turning into a vampire had been for her. But he had been seconds away from killing her just moments ago so she didn’t feel too guilty. She would check in with him later, on the phone or something where he couldn’t stake her. Distance was best. So she let him walk off.
As for Nik, there was something he wasn’t telling her. Like how the hell he suddenly got so strong. Right now though she just wanted to get out of there, she could question him later. “Look’s like I’ll be ditching the rest of my classes… again.”
