It wasn’t really a walk of shame when you had packed a change of clothes for the next day and you were dropped off at the local Starbucks, right? But it still felt a little weird to stay over at Tom’s and then have him drop her off on the way to work. Her car was at her place, so she’d have to figure out a way to bum a ride back there later tonight, but she honestly wasn’t that worried about it. She needed to get some proper coffee in her body before she went to the gym to see what was going on and if she needed to be there, otherwise she was just going to go home and maybe try to do some cleaning to surprise Lissa.
So, with a kiss to Tom she grabbed her bag from the back seat and got out of the car before telling him thanks for the ride. The door was shut behind her and she had tunnel vision as she made a beeline to the door to coffee nirvana. Once inside she took a deep breath, looping the strap of the bag over her shoulder, and walked over to join the line so she could put in her order and become a functioning member of society.
As usual Veronica had gotten very little sleep, but no not for the fun reasons. For work. Another late night at the office. So of course she had to stop at Starbucks before heading back into work again the next morning. Oh how she missed the days when Tom would bring her coffee at work. She hadn’t seen much of that lovable douche lately. Weird.
As if thinking about her friend had summoned him she saw him out of the corner of her eye she saw some brunette getting out of his car. Ah well that explained it. A small smirk appeared on Veronica’s face as the girl ended up in line right behind her. “You know Tom?” she asked, a little blunt but subtly was never her strong suit.
It took her a moment to register that the girl in front of her was speaking to her. Coffee was certainly needed to function properly. She blinked as she finally realized what she was being asked, “What? Oh! Yes, I know Tom. Sorry, I need coffee to function properly in the morning.” It didn’t even cross her mind to ask if they were talking about the same person, but it honestly would surprise her if it wasn’t the same Tom since Tom had a habit of being such a social butterfly.
“I make it a habit to start every morning with some sort of caffeinated beverage,” Veronica agreed as the line moved forward. “I have no clue what people did before coffee,” how did the cavemen function? Of course she was a bit curious about this girl and Tom, but Veronica was going to do her best to go against her prying instincts. Maybe she would ask Tom about it later, if she remembered. His sex life wasn’t exactly top of her priority list.
“Honestly, no idea. They probably didn’t have to worry about caffeine because they went to bed a decent time. Lack of stimulus probably made for a better life,” Rose pointed out with a small chuckle. Oh to be a caveman, it was probably so simple back then, but she knew she would find herself incredibly bored if she was a caveman, “But I really love coffee so I’m not going to complain about needing my fix in the morning.”
“You sound just a little like an addict,” Veronica quipped. “Not that I’m one to talk,” she added with a small smile as the line moved forward again, she stepped up to the cash register placing her order. After she paid she was off to the side counter to wait for her drink. Once the girl behind her had done the same Veronica decided to pick the conversation back up again. “Veronica by the way,” her way of introduction.
"Rose, nice to meet you," she answered once she was back next to the girl waiting for her coffee, "and total addict. I have a lovely gold card and everything. I think I am getting to the point where I should probably try to fight it, but alas, I love it too much." Rose actually wasn't that bad, but she did need it to start functioning.
“Better coffee than coke,” Veronica retorted referring to the drug and not the drink obviously. Hopefully Rose wasn’t some coke head that Veronica had offended, but she didn’t think she was. “I know what you mean though. I think I would fall asleep at my desk without it.”
“Oh god, right?” Rose couldn’t help but laugh at that comment. There were definitely far worse things she could be addicted to. Caffeine wasn’t too bad and she usually only drank a cup a day because it was usually some kind of protein drink during the rest of the day, “Yeah, no one wants to randomly nod off during the day. Life’s short, gotta stay awake and enjoy it.”
“Also probably a good idea to not fall asleep while working,” Veronica honestly couldn’t remembered the last time she really had the time to enjoy life. Speaking of she did have to get to work soon. But of course her order wasn’t ready just yet. “Where are you off to after this?” since the girl didn’t look like she was headed into an office post coffee.
“I work over at a gym down a few blocks. I’m an MMA fighter, so I go in to train and help out around the place. So just need my coffee and my bag and I’m good to go for the day,” She gestured to the bag that was hanging from her shoulder, which contained her change of clothes for the gym, “What about you?”
That was actually pretty cool, especially considering all the recent spike in crime that seemed to be going on lately. “Impressive,” Veronica admitted with a slow nod of her head just as her name was called. She grabbed her drink before turning her attention back to Rose. “I work at a law office. Defense attorney,” she shrugged taking a sip of her latte.
“Oooo, so I can come call you if I get in some trouble?” it was always good to know someone like that and she didn’t really think Veronica screamed attorney, but that was probably a good thing. She certainly had to be smart and witty to make it in that field. But her thoughts were distracted when she heard her name and went to grab her coffee.
“Yup, but staying out of trouble would be my professional advice,” she replied still digging her card out of her purse to hand to Rose after she had grabbed her coffee. “I should get to work, but it was nice meeting you.” She seemed like a good girl, Tom would be lucky if he was seeing her.
“Nice to meet you as well,” she tucked the card away in her bag and smiled at her, “I’ll definitely keep you in mind if I happen to get in trouble. Have a great rest of your day.” The two of them walked together towards the exit because Rose had to get going with her day as well, but she was happy to make a new friend who happened to know who Tom was.
