The amount of ice cream Peggy had bought after her dreams about Captain America crashing his plane was astounding. She practically bought the entire section at her local grocery store, but they didn’t have much in the way of selection period, but that was beside the point. Steve Rogers may not be in this world right at this moment, but she was incredibly attached to him thanks to the dreams. The man represented a lot of values that Peggy found important and didn’t think that anyone she met could ever live up to him.
And it didn’t help that the dream feelings had bled into her own life and she felt quite attached to him. It only made it worse when she had the dream of him crashing his plane and knowing that there would never be a dance between the two of them. Total gut-wrenching, heart-breaking kind of stuff and Peggy had instantly gone to the store to get ice cream.
Thankfully Sharon could understand something like this and she was more than willing to share her ice cream and tell her angsty stories about what was going on.
Sharon could absolutely understand the weird feelings from the Dreams. Thankfully, hers hadn’t been that deep or that confusing, but they were there. It was her Real Life that was confusing for her. At least the mood swings had abated. She wasn’t snapping at people anymore, wasn’t bursting into tears at toilet paper commercials as much now.
Sharon told Veronica where she was going, packed up some sundae making things, and headed to her cousin’s apartment. She was still wearing her pajamas under her coat as she stood on Peggy’s front doorstep, waiting for her to answer.
She answered the door and arched an eyebrow at Sharon in the pajamas and chuckled, “PJs? Really? I can go change into mine if that’s the kind of sundaes you wanna have. I didn’t realize you were all ready for bed.” She stepped aside to allow her cousin to enter and then closed the door behind her.
“Let me go change into my pjs,” Peggy didn’t even give Sharon a chance to reply and quickly went into her bedroom. PJs sounded like a great idea and she was more than happy to take her work clothes off for the evening and just relax. When she came back out she grinned and went to the freezer, “How’s baby?”
“The moment I get home I change into my pajamas, now-a-days.” Sharon replied. “Who do I have to impress?” She came into the place and closed the door behind herself, then moved into the kitchen to start dishing up ice cream, whipped cream, and chocolate syrup. When Peggy came back in Sharon grinned. “That’s better. It’s like a sleepover.”
She held out a bowl to her cousin. “Already done. Baby’s fine. She just wants ice cream.” Of course, Sharon had no idea if the baby was a girl or a boy. She alternated talking about the little one as male and female.
“You are so on top of it. And I completely hear you about wanting to change directly into pajamas when you get home. I’m leaning towards doing that nowadays especially since I get sick of wearing my work clothes for long periods of time. What I wouldn’t kill for some casual days at work,” Peggy commented with a laugh and then realized that she could be the one to implement some casual dress days, “Oh my god. I am in charge of that. Maybe that should start happening.”
She took the bowl of ice cream and reached over to gently pat Sharon’s stomach. It had become a habit whenever she saw her cousin and it was her own little way of letting the baby know that Aunt Peggy was there and cared about them, “And that is one smart baby.”
Sharon laughed. “Casual Fridays. I could definitely get behind that.” She grinned, then grabbed a couple spoons. Ah! Baby bump touches! Sharon shifted her bowl aside. She was starting to look pudgy, starting to look like there was actually a baby in there. Though it wasn’t really blatant yet. She could still hide it with baggy clothes.
Soon, though. Soon she wouldn’t be able to hide it anymore.
“She is. I think. I’ve been playing her classical music.” Sharon said, blushing a little. “And reading aloud.”
“Cuuuuute. I saw that there’s headphones you can buy that will fit around your belly and the baby can listen to the music,” she didn’t really see the pudgy side of Sharon and thought that she looked the same as usual, but there was a definite pregnancy glow going on. She probably wouldn’t even register her growing baby bump until it was incredibly large.
“But yes, casual fridays may become a thing. I’m sure you’ll like that once you get bigger and then I will totally allow you to wear sweatpants to work or some of those comfy maternity yoga pants or whatever.”
“I’m not sure I’m ready to shell out money for special headphones. But I play it loud enough that I can hear it… it probably sounds echoey to him.” She ran her hand over the miniscule baby bump. Then she turned to lead the way into the living room so they could sit on the sofa and have their sundaes. “Definitely. I love sweatpants. My yoga pants, too, though they’re getting a bit snug around the waist.”
“A lot of baby stuff seems overpriced for no reason,” it was probably just the industry. They could sucker new parents in by showing must-have items and charging an outrageous price for them, “But no worries. As long as the baby gets some musical influence one way or another then that’s good. We’re going to make sure you are a super smart baby.”
She decorated her sundae and then moved to join her cousin on the couch. She settled in to a corner and crossed her legs, “So, what else has been up with you? Everything still okay at work?”
“They get to play against our instincts. The need to protect and treat our children like they’re the best, the only children in existence.” Sharon said softly. “If you don’t buy the best thing, do you really love your child? That sort of nonsense.” She shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t buy into it, though.” She grinned softly, curling up on the sofa with her bowl.
“Everything’s fine. I’m so glad that I talked to Natasha. I was worried I was going to be confined to a desk considering my… condition. But I’m still eligable for field work, so I’ll be working as long and as hard as I can.”
“Good, don’t buy into the man,” Peggy chuckled as she took a bite of her ice cream and smiled. She was glad that Sharon was working for the same place as her because then they could talk about things like this. And being the new Director gave her the opportunity to make some changes if they were brought up to her, “I’m glad you did too. And don’t work too hard, I don’t want you to hurt anything or that baby in there. I would love to keep you on your feet as long as possible, but not at the risk of your health.”
Sharon nodded. “I’ve got a clean bill of health. As soon as my OB says it’s time to stop working, I will. I promise.” Sharon wasn’t the kind of woman to go against her doctor’s orders. If it was a boss ordering her to do something, she’d be more likely to raise a question. But a doctor--especially one she trusted with her life, her baby’s life--she would listen to. “When I thought I was going to be confined to a desk, I was so upset.”
“Understandable. We’re not the type of girls to just sit around at a desk all day. I can tell that I’m going to start getting antsy doing more desk work. I think everyone should be allowed to work as much as they can doing what they love to do,” Peggy completely understood where Sharon was coming from. It wouldn’t be fun to still be able to do their kind of work and not be allowed it. She was happy to work for a company that didn’t operate that way.
“Good. We’ll work together and come up with some kind of compromise.” Sharon grinned softly at her cousin. This was going to be a good thing--this promotion--for both of them. She took a bite of the ice cream. “Now… off work and onto personal life. You go first.”
"Not a whole lot in my personal life. Dreamt about Steve crashing his plane into the ice. Extremely upsetting, so hence all the ice cream now. I am far too busy with the Agency now to get anything else done in my personal life. You?" She was honest with her cousin and knew work affected her personal life. It was starting to get annoying, but someday she would be able to figure it out.
“I’m pregnant,” Sharon said, playfully. “It’s not like I’m gonna have much of a personal life.” Not in the romantic sense. She spent all her time either working, hanging around with Veronica, or having coffee tea dates with former partners. “But there was that weekend in San Diego with Bucky,” she said, going a little pink at the memory. “It was nice to relax for a bit.”
“I see you going pink, love. And this Bucky Barnes, right? Dream Steve’s best friend,” she remembered that Tony had brought him up recently, but she hadn’t realized that something was going on between him and Sharon. There had to be by the way she was going pink thinking about it, “And come on, you can still have a personal life while being pregnant. I mean, you may meet some creepy guys if you try to go romantically, but you can still go out and have fun.”
“Yes. Bucky.” Sharon gave a laugh, letting the pink spread across her cheeks. “He’s a really nice guy. He suggested that I should relax and not pre-plan all kinds of things in my life… so I let him take the reigns for a weekend. We went to Sea World. It was ridiculously fun.”
“Is there potentially something more going on with this?” with a very curious tone in her voice and a raise of her eyebrow, “That that was a pretty brilliant move on his part. You deserve to go out and do something like that. Just relax for a while. I know that’s hard to do when you’re pregnant, but you can certainly cut back on your work schedule at some point so you can recharge.”
“Oh, no no.” Sharon said, shaking her head. “No, I don’t think he’s interested in anything more. Why would he be?” All men should be turning on their heels and running in the opposite direction. Her ex-boyfriend certainly did when she told him about the baby. “He’s just really kind. And it was nice to take the whole weekend off.”
“You never know. I mean, a good man would probably wait until after the baby is born to pursue something, but still be there for you. I guess we’ll find out eventually,” Peggy wiggled her eyebrows and giggled, “And I totally need to take a weekend off. I feel like I’ve just been working so hard lately and had absolutely no time to relax. I’m quite jealous of your San Diego trip.”
“Maybe you and I should take a weekend off, then.” Sharon suggested. That was a much more pleasant topic to latch onto than her love life. Or lack there of. “We could go up to San Francisco for a long weekend sometime.”
“Oooh, maybe. I haven’t been up there before. That would be a lot of fun. We can be complete tourists and see all the sights,” Peggy had gone exploring much around the state yet and that was on her list of things to do. She still needed to see more of the United States period.
“I’ve never done it. I mean, I’ve been to San Francisco once, for a conference, but I didn’t get to go see the Golden Gate Bridge or anything. You’d think that’d be the first thing we’d do.” Sharon sighed, then leaned back against the sofa, focusing on her ice cream. “I’m excited for our weekend away. It’s gonna be great.”
“We should definitely make sure that we drive across it to get the full experience. And I want to see that prison, Alcatraz? Sounds quite interesting. Oh! And look for seals,” Peggy had never really gone to a place like Sea World before, so she didn’t often get to see marine mammals in real life. She hadn’t gone to a zoo in a very long time, so knowing that there were seals that just hung around the docks sounded like a great sight to see.
“Oh yeah.” Sharon gave a bright smile at the idea of the prison. It sounded really interesting. A real piece of Americana, the history of their great state. “If you want to see seals, we should go to Sea World. I’ll see if Bucky wants to go again sometime.” Sharon offered. “They have these really amazing dolphins, too. But we can go look for the ones at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco, too.”
“Isn’t Sea World like a faux passe nowadays? I know there was some sort of uproar about whales not that long ago, but maybe we can go if we don’t get attacked by protesters. It would be an easy to way to see all of them,” Peggy commented with a chuckle, “But yeah, we should maybe plan a trip to both places.”
“I don’t know. Something about Orcas?” Sharon shrugged gently. “Honestly, I’m glad that there are people in the world who are worrying about nature and animals and all of that, because I’m so focused on my own issues and my baby.” She was already in a mom mindset, apparently. “If I had time and energy to put forth for protecting the animals, I would. But right now, I’m a bit single minded.”
“It’s completely understandable. You’re making a new life for this world, so you should be focused on that. I’m focused on making sure we can continue to live in this world, so protesting Sea World isn’t high on my list. But whatever, we can still go,” Peggy let out a chuckle as she took another bite of her ice cream, “Should we put a movie on?”
“Yeah, let’s definitely put a movie on.” Sharon grinned. She climbed up from the sofa and grabbed some DVDs to choose from. It was going to be a great girls night with her favorite cousin.
