Katniss didn't know what to expect of this arrangement. She hoped she'd get some sleep. More than the broken few hours she'd been getting at home. Being surrounded by her mom and Prim was just making things worse it seemed and she couldn't talk to them because she didn't want them to have the Dreams. Knocking on Haymitch's front door, she waited for him to answer. The least she hoped was that the smell of roses would disappear.
Haymitch hadn’t actually expected Katniss to take him up on his offer but was pleased she had. He only hoped it helped, having him here would be good or bad and there was really only one way to find out which. Opening the door he smiled as he stepped back, “Hey, welcome. Come in and make yourself at home”
"Thanks," Katniss gave him a little smile as she stepped past him into his house. She swung her backpack down off her back and asked, "Where shall I put my stuff?"
“Down the hall, second door on the right. First door is the bathroom” he added, so she knew and in case she wanted to use it to freshen up or whatever it was that girls did in the bathroom for so long.
“Ok, thanks,” Katniss nodded and headed off to the room he had pointed out to drop her bag. Once she’d done it, she stopped by the bathroom to quickly splash some water on her face. Then she headed back out to find Haymitch. Stepping into the front room, she looked around for him , sliding her hands into her back pockets before calling out. “Haymitch?”
“In the kitchen” he called, letting her find her way to him. “You hungry or thirsty or anything?” he asked her, “I’m pretty well stocked for once. I went shopping yesterday”
“I’d love a juice if you’ve got one?” Katniss asked as she headed towards his voice. Entering the kitchen, she looked around appreciatively at the room. She slid her hands into her back pockets and headed over to join him. “Seems a bit quiet now,” she commented, looking out the kitchen window.
“Sure” he said, one thing Katniss would find in his house was well stocked with different juices. It came as part and parcel of the lack of alcohol in his life. “Yeah” he agreed quietly, “Strange how quickly I got used to her being round here”
Katniss looked at her feet and kicked at an imaginary rock there. "Sorry," she said to him, not looking up, then cleared her throat. "How's work?" She asked, more brightly in an attempt to change the subject.
“Not your fault kiddo. No apology needed” he told her, placing a glass full of juice in front of her. “Works good” he nodded, “Busy, which helps. Got a few big contracts in the bag. How about you? Keeping busy?”
Katniss shrugged and reached out to take hold of the glass of juice. “I suppose. Managed to get myself a part-time job at Stark Industries, so that should hopefully keep me busy and a guy on the Valarnet has offered to mentor me with my archery, so I’m hoping it should give me some focus,” she smiled. Despite the craziness of her Dreams and smelling roses practically everywhere, she was trying desperately to get her life on some kind of track.
“Well that sounds encouraging. Something positive from the dreams is good right?” Haymitch said, “I’m glad you’ve found a job too. Stark is an excellent company to work for”
“I hope so,” Katniss shrugged. “I figure I can either dwell on it and go crazy or keep busy and stave it off for as long as I can,” she shook her head and took a drink. “You know anyone who works for Stark? Ever met him?”
“I know a few people actually. And I know Stark and Miss Potts his right hand woman. She’s the one who really keeps things in order. But yeah, I’ve done some work for them before. They’re nice people and the company appreciates it’s employees” Haymitch respected them both, especially Tony who knew how to talk without all the bullshit.
"Ok, well hopefully I'll get on ok there," Katniss nodded, feeling more confident about starting work. "I just hope they don't have roses in every office," she remarked, heading out to settle in more in her room.
