Because of her mandated time off, Alex had too much time alone to think about all of these dreams, and everything that was happening. One of her dreams was full of horrible, skeletal creatures that were coming after her in waves. They were thin, but each time they hit her, it felt as if their bony fingers cut through her skin as if it was made of butter. She was armed with a shotgun, but the blast didn't do more than push them back and they just descended on her again. Alex had been afraid it would last forever, but it was interrupted by the sound of a phone ringing. When she woke up and looked at her phone, she saw that it was 3:33 in the morning, but there was no missed call. After that, her dreams only got worse. The next dream was that call, that her father had been murdered in their family home and Alex was back in Rhode Island, looking at a bloodied sheet covering a body with no head. It was gruesome and though the version of herself in the dream had nearly gotten sick at the sight, the version of her here had a much stronger stomach, though her heart broke just the same. The ones after that were full of frustration, the police failing to find anything to help her understand what had happened to her grandfather, the last member of her family. Two nights ago, Alex dreamed about finding a large, leather-bound book and waking up, it was sitting on her desk as if she had carried it back with her. Before posting about it on the network, Alex had just sat in the shitty IKEA chair she didn't have the money to replace, studying the cover of it. She was afraid to touch it, and even more so to open it. Alex didn't know anything about it, and while she knew she could either open it and try to see what was inside or wait to dream about it, she still wasn't sure she wanted to know. Her post on the network didn't help her feel much better about it. While the first person to post seemed like she wanted to help and like she knew a little about magic (something Alex still didn't want to admit might be real), the second person to post only made her more nervous about this whole thing. Either way, she was standing on Zee's front door step with that old tome wrapped tightly up in the backpack she was wearing. Alex wasn't sure what would happen when she opened it, so she had wrapped it up with rope, tied it and then wrapped all of that up in an old sheet. It was probably ridiculous to be that careful with just a book, but she couldn't be too cautious, or at least that's what she told herself. Shifting anxiously, she rang the doorbell. |
