After talking to Nik, Caroline immediately left Hans’ place and went home. Of course she said a quick goodbye to Hans and Anna first, but then she was out the door. She wanted to be there and ready by the time Nik got done wrapping things up.
Even though Hans had taken off his shirt and burned it, some blood had still gotten inside her car and it definitely still smelled of it, causing Caroline to crave it of course. At least Hans kept blood at his place so she was able to have some the previous night and in the morning. But as soon as she got home she heated up some more. Ever since last night she had been hungrier than normal. She wasn’t sure if it was because of all the activity, giving Hans her blood, being around the smell of blood so much, or the fact that she had given into her vampire instincts and drank a person dry. Whatever the reason was, she didn’t like it.
Once she finished her blood, she had no idea how much longer she had until Nik would arrive. She could already tell he was worried so he would probably be there soon, but still she could use a shower. Wash last night off of her. Caroline was quick about it though, changing into jeans and a flowery blouse, she tossed her still wet hair into a ponytail. No time to dry it. She didn’t even bother with makeup. Even if she was going to be with Nik, she didn’t care all that much about how she looked today.
Just as she was grabbing her purse she heard a knock at the door. Perfect timing. Still Caroline used her vampire speed to the door before either of her roommates. She hadn’t exactly checked to see if they were home, but she was pretty sure at least one of them was around. She didn’t want to talk to either right now, they would be able to tell she was upset and the only person she wanted to see at the moment was Nik.
“Hi,” she said as she opened the door, there wasn’t even a hint of a smile on her face. She did give him a quick peck on the lips as she stepped out the door, locking it behind her. “Thank you,” she added, thanking him for both cancelling his classes and coming to get her.
If Caroline had asked him to cancel classes, there had to be something else - some secret encoded in everything she had told him via text. And while vampirism gifted her with a set of abilities that made her practically invincible, aside from key components like oh, sunlight, not being worried about her safety was entirely out of the question. He made a few calls, answered some e-mails, put up flyers outside his class room doors, and he was out and to her condo in record time.
A peck didn’t exactly suffice as a greeting, and Nik slid a hand behind her neck to pull her in close, and kiss her. Fierce, but nothing frisky about it - it held the purpose of comfort. “Hey,” he then said, surveying her quickly with his blue eyes. “Got here as fast as I could. And I’ve got something for you, in the car.”
Well, Caroline certainly felt a little better. The guilt was still there, but Nik was a pretty damn good distraction. She returned his kiss, a small smile forming on her face. How could she not smile after that greeting? “You made good time. I needed to shower anyways.” She was beginning to notice a bit of an accent when he spoke though, he was beginning to sound more and more like the dreams. It was hot, but it also worried her. She wasn’t exactly sure what else that meant for him.
“A present?” Him cancelling his classes for the day was already way more than enough. Honestly, she felt a little bad asking that of him, but one day couldn’t hurt too much. Right? “Well what are we standing around here for then?” she reached out for his hand making her way to the car. Not only was she a little excited for whatever he had for her, but she also didn’t want to stand around the condo too long. Just in case one of her roommates decided to see who had come to the door.
Once both were tucked into the car and the doors closed, he reached over to his backseat and pulled out a little box - a slice of peanut butter chocolate pie from her old employer - with a set of plastic utensils on top. “I’m sure you don’t crave blood all the time,” Nik smirked. “Usually when Rebekah would get upset, she’d have a sweet tooth craving that, once satisfied, made her feel somewhat better. Less tantrums. Not saying you have tantrums, of course - but my sister has quite the temper on her.”
It was something quick; comfort food for the ride or to have her pick at once they got to his loft. Revving up the car, he began driving off.
“Now are you going to tell me what really has you bothered, or do you prefer to have me pull it out of you once we get to my place?”
She did still eat regular food. She didn’t really need to, but she still enjoyed the taste. It didn’t taste quite as good as when she was human, but the flavors were still there. It was sweet really, that Nik had stopped to get her some comfort food. “No tantrums,” she confirmed as she opened up the box, already digging in. She wouldn’t eat it all now though. Save some for his place. To share. Nik did like peanut butter too.
Her mood immediately changed with his next question. Caroline sighed, setting her fork down inside the box, her eyes focussing on the road ahead of them. Of course Nik would realise there was a bit more to the story than what Caroline had already told him. He did know her pretty well. Still she wasn’t ready to tell him what she had done. It wasn’t like when either of them killed people in the dreams. She could write that off as not being who she really was. But this was real. “It was just a lot,” she finally said. Which she knew as vague and cryptic.
“Maybe at your place.” They would be there soon anyways.
He took his eyes off the road briefly to look at her. “My place,” he agreed, and he’d hold her to it.
It didn’t take long to get there. Nik led them through the doors, up the elevator to his floor, and fished for his keys. His loft was rather clean for man who lived on his lonesome, sans the empty pizza box in the kitchen, but really, that was it.
“Sit,” he instructed, stashed his keys on top of his kitchen nook, and approached the fridge. “Anything to drink? Water, beer, soda? Blood?” His shoulders shrugged; he’d kept a stash of blood bags ready for when she came over. He wasn’t about to let his lady starve, after all.
“Bossy,” Caroline replied setting her pie down on the coffee table before taking a seat on the couch.
She was good on blood for now, having already fed twice this morning. Was it too early for beer though? Well if Nik was going to make her talk about last night she was going to need alcohol. “Beer,” she didn’t give a damn if it was too early or not. Besides it wasn’t like Nik was going to judge her on that.
Caroline picked her pie up from the coffee table. There was still about two thirds left. “You want some?” she asked as she took another bite herself.
Nik was currently out of stock in regards to the stronger stuff - his favorite indulgence at the moment - so a beer it was, and he pulled out two bottles. Drinking alone this early was a little depressing, so he’d join her, because a drink might be necessary if he was going to demand all the sordid details of her little misadventure last night.
Instead of settling in beside her, he decided to sit on the coffee table (it was sturdy enough to hold his weight) and handed her a bottle. “I got it for you, love. Now, if you so graciously leave me leftovers, I wouldn’t be opposed to finishing it for you. But first thing’s first. You admitted to leaving out some details, Caroline. You might as well be honest with me.”
One more bite and Caroline set the pie back down beside Nik. With her strength it was easy for her to pop the top off the bottle, no bottle opener needed. She took a nice long gulp preparing herself for everything she was about to say. She wasn’t exactly looking forward to reliving last night’s events. But if Nik had gone through something like that she would want to know every damn detail. It was only fair she told him the same.
“So Hans and I had just finished paying or well me compelling all our alcohol when a bunch of guys came in demanding money. Next thing I knew there were gunshots, then a fireball,” she wasn’t exactly sure if she was supposed to share that part but it came out anyways. At least she didn’t mention who threw it. “I was just standing there like an idiot watching the whole thing. Then a bullet grazed my arm. Which fucking hurt, but it snapped me out of my stupid trance,” she paused. Time for more beer before she told him what she had done.
She was a little scared to admit to killing. Well terrified really. It was one thing to kill in the dreams. But another entirely to do it for real. What would he think of her? “I killed them,” she mumbled, her voice quiet barely even audible. She could feel the tears welling up again, but she refused to let any fall. Her glassy eyes focussed on her lap instead of at Nik, scared of what the look on his face might be.
Fuck, was nothing sacred around these parts anymore? His beer was uncapped but he had yet to drink from it, though he was tempted for a long gulp when she added the interesting tidbit of a fireball that had made an appearance to her story. But that aspect was the least of his concern, and when she uttered the last statement - that’s when it all made sense to him.
I killed them.
Caroline, the one who feels guilt for defending herself when people decide to wilfully shoot up a business filled with innocents. Though now wasn’t the time to make sarcastic comments about it (and he felt guilty, when did he get sarcastic about murder?), and she was visibly upset. Abandoning the bottle next to the pie, Nik leaned forward and took her hands into his. “Hey, you did what was...necessary, Caroline. Think about what would have happened if things were different, and you would have been human? Do you think they’d feel any guilt killing you?”
Well that wasn’t the reaction she was expecting. Though she wasn’t sure exactly what she was expecting. It wasn’t like murder was an every day occurrence. Maybe in Mystic Falls, but not here. No longer scared of his reaction, Caroline finally looked up at him, her eyes still filled with tears, one sliding down her cheek. “Probably not,” she finally admitted her voice a bit shaky. It still didn’t make her feel any better though.
Unfortunately there was still a bit more to the story. But she didn’t think she could admit that she actually liked killing them, how natural it had felt to give in to that side of her. “I.. um, fed on one,” at least she could admit that part. She didn’t look away from Nik with that confession, though she was still scared of what he might think of her. He deserved to know exactly what he was dating. Now she truly felt like a monster.
Nothing she could tell him would ever surprise him. Would ever disgust him, and it certainly wouldn’t offend him. Caroline was the one taking a risk dating the monster of her dreams, after all - he couldn’t stand to judge when he felt that one day he could be possible for worse things.
“You’ve got the instincts of a predator, love, it’s an unfortunate aspect of the package,” Nik said, offering her a small, mirthless smile, and brought her fingers to his mouth for a kiss. “As far as I’m concerned, those bastards got everything they deserved - they shot up a goddamn liquor store, obviously not giving a damn about who they hurt, who they could kill. Some people don’t deserve remorse.”
The concept of death and murder didn’t bother him. Thanks to the dreams, he was quite immune to the shock of it all - it bothered him at first, witnessing so much blood, knowing that there was a version of him that existed somewhere that was capable of all that. Now it meant very little to him. “Don’t ever feel guilty about protecting yourself, and your friend.”
Now was a good time to thank his lucky stars for Caroline’s convenient gift of immortality - bullets wouldn’t kill her. Would hurt like a bitch, unpleasantly so, but it wouldn’t kill her. She had speed and strength to escape a sticky situation. She was far more equipped at the art of survival than he was.
Nik succeeded in making her feel at least a little better. Of course the guilt was still there and she was a little disappointed in herself for draining a person of their blood. But what could she have done really? It was her (and everyone else in the store) or them. She blinked, letting the last unshed tear fall from her eyes and attempted a small smile. “You’re right, I did what I had to,” she was still trying to convince herself of it, but it was starting to sink in. Was it terrible that she could justify what she had done?
This exchange with Nik was so different than when she had killed people in front of Klaus in the dreams. Though she couldn’t really blame him for not comforting her there, she had just called him a terrible person, but still some comfort would have been nice. It was like Nik was only made up of the good she saw in Klaus, minus the time she had seen his rage.
“You know, I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to leave my sight,” if she had been worried about him before she was even more worried now. “There is no way I am going to let anything like that happen to you,” honestly she wouldn’t be able to handle it. “Plus you’re nice to look at.”
“Good to know you’re protecting my well-being so I can continue to provide you with eye candy,” Nik said, a laugh mixed into his words. “Anyway, yes, you did - you did exactly what you had to do. You were in a difficult circumstance with a friend; you did what anyone else would have done.” If he had Caroline’s abilities, he would have made sure their deaths were slow and tortuous - ripped organs, leaving them hanging by their entrails like a work of art.
A disturbing imagery to everyone else, but he had seen it all already. Nothing bothered him now.
He rose from his unconventional spot on the coffee table, pulling her up with him - though the show of strength behind it felt a little...different. “You’re quite fortunate I won’t argue with your point much, however. As you’re nice to look at, too. But don’t forget I’ve got family. You don’t have to play bodyguard all the time.”
“And good sex. Can’t forget that part,” she teased feeling a bit more like herself. She wasn’t sure she did what anyone else would have done. Not exactly everyone was capable of snapping necks at the blink of an eye, not to mention draining a person of their blood, but she got what he meant. “You know, for someone who just learned the person they are seeing killed three people you are taking it pretty well,” better than she was taking it. His reaction was helping though.
Caroline settled in his arms, resting her head on his shoulder. “True, but you know you would much rather be around me,” she replied. Not only because of what she was to him, or well what she thought she was to him, but also because she knew he was a bit paranoid about his family still. She was pretty sure he trusted her, but not so much them.
“Don’t think anything you do could disturb me, love,” Nik told her, wrapping her up into his arms, cradling her head against him and pressing a kiss to her temple. He didn’t like that she felt remorse at the situation - it was pointless to him - but she wouldn’t be Caroline if she didn’t.
His eyes followed the stairwell that led to the level of his room. Nestled in the safety of his nightstand was a bracelet he’d only seen in the dreams, an item he never thought he’d touch in the flesh.
But it was hers. It was supposed to be hers.
He heaved a sigh, then placed another kiss - this time to her neck. “I have something that’s supposed to be...yours.”
Of course Caroline felt remorse. Who wouldn’t? Oh right, Klaus. But he wasn’t Klaus. He was Nik. And he hadn’t actually murdered anyone. Just seen it in the dreams. At least as far as she knew he hadn’t. “That’s one of the things I like about you. You aren’t scared of the.. darker parts of me.” There was an allure to darkness after all.
Yes, Caroline was full of light, but being a vampire - there were some dark things that went with that.
A frowned formed on her face, but she didn’t move, her hands tucked against his chest. She was not a fan of his sigh or the tone of his voice. She wanted more comfort still, and definitely more kissing. “Why do I have a feeling that it’s not a good thing?”
“It’s not a terrible thing,” he said, his uncertain attempt for reassurance, and now he wished he hadn’t opened his damn mouth. Too late to take it back, and if he tried playing it off as if it were something else, she’d detect it. Caroline wasn’t stupid. Brains and beauty in one immortal package, lucky him.
He dug his grave, time to lay in it.
“Come with.” A grab of her hand, and he led her up the stairs and into his bedroom. The bed was unmade, but the floor was clear and it was still orderly for someone who lived by himself. Better that way - otherwise Caroline would probably spend most of her time playing ‘organizational tetris’ until everything had a rhyme or rhythm. Maybe even try and put things in alphabetical order, fuck if he knew.
Nik then let her go, sat on the edge of his bed and opened his nightstand. In it was a long black jewelry box, and he spun it in his hands, keeping it closed. “I don’t really know what to do with it. Giving it to you seems...inappropriate, I suppose. But I’d leave its fate in your hands.”
It was the bracelet.
Well that was settled then. Time to see whatever it was Nik had that was supposed to be hers, so up the stairs she went. Not that she had much of a choice and okay she was curious. Caroline was a bit preoccupied with thinking of what it could be that she didn’t notice how tidy Nik’s room was, though that wasn’t unusual. Her boyfriend’s place was usually pretty put together, another quality she liked about the man.
Caroline took a seat next to him while he retrieved the item. This felt like something she might need to sit down for. The second she saw the box she knew exactly what was inside. There was only one thing Nik would be unsure about giving her that would fit inside that box. Not to mention the box looked exactly like the one she had seen in her dreams, well minus the bow and the note that read ‘From Klaus’.
“Well if that’s what I think it is, I would certainly hope you wouldn’t be giving it to anyone else,” a joke to lighten the mood though there was some truth to it. Not only because what was inside was meant for her, but she also didn’t exactly like the idea of Nik giving jewelry to anyone else.
“Are you going to let me see?” she could easily snatch it from his hands before he even knew what was happening, but she wanted to wait until he was ready to give it to her.
Sadly the bow and note didn’t make it from the dreams, though he was quite fine with that - the black box and the expensive bracelet was enough to trigger the feelings that came with the memories. And lately, Nik had a harder time trying to keep it all separate, seeing all the terrible goddamn things he’d done to the people he loved. A neverending cycle, one that would likely never stop.
He smirked, though it came out a bit more morose than intended, and handed over the box. “No, love. It’s yours. There and here, if you want it. Though if you do accept it, it’ll be under much better circumstances, don’t we agree?”
The bow and note were not needed. It would be a bit silly if the note had shown up for Nik considering it was from him. Maybe if it had been Caroline’s dream gift, but it wasn’t. It was Nik’s and he was choosing to give it to her.
Better circumstances. Sure. Instead of Klaus using her boyfriend to almost kill her, she had just killed three people. But then was there really ever a good time to give her that bracelet? “How long have you had it?” she couldn’t help but ask, her curiosity getting the better of her as she accepted the box from him.
She gingerly lifted the top of the box revealing the bracelet inside. It was safe to say that it took her breath away for a moment. Bad dream memories forgotten, Caroline had never seen such a lavish piece of jewelry before. Well yes in the dreams obviously, but it was different seeing it in real life. The bracelet was gorgeous with the diamonds catching the light.
“Can I try it on?” she asked softly. Not that she had anywhere to where it to or anything to wear it with, (well maybe that dress he had gotten her for Christmas) and she almost felt guilty wearing something that expensive. But still, she couldn’t help herself.
“Of course you can try it on,” he scoffed, though it was more of a gesture of amusement accompanied with a roll of his eyes. “It is yours, technically.” And it was a surprise as to why Caroline hadn’t received it and he did. What else was he supposed to do with it?
He peeled the bracelet off the velvet cushion and with a quiet ‘come here,’ he circled the bracelet around her wrist and hook it together. Klaus had an exquisite taste in jewelry, that he couldn’t dispute. A whole vault of antiques and art and dresses and trinkets were at his disposal, and if not, he could snap a neck (or compel someone, the more human way of ‘getting what you wanted’ when it came to being a vampire) and it’d be his.
Nik wouldn’t spoil the story of the bracelet. Blood jewels often dampened the moment.
It was probably best Nik kept exactly where Klaus had gotten the bracelet to himself and Caroline knew not to ask. There were some things she was better off not knowing. Caroline held out her wrist examining the bracelet on her. “It’s very pretty,” she commented. “Doesn’t quite make up for the fact that you tried to have my boyfriend kill me, but since you didn’t do that here I guess I’ll keep it,” she was teasing… mostly. She really would keep the bracelet.
“Now you just have to find a ball to take me to, and then we can bond over horses and” terrible fathers “your love of art and I won’t even throw the bracelet back at you,” more teasing but it was a good distraction and Caroline was beginning to feel more like herself again.
“Or,” she paused climbing onto his lap, “we can have some fun with me wearing nothing but the bracelet.”
