Where: The Agency
What: Meeting for Coffee
Rating/Warnings: Low/None
Status: Complete
Tony had had about enough of this crime wave in Orange County, and wanted to go poke at The Agency and see what he could do to help. Because he’d been doing a fairly good job of stopping and preventing crime on his own (the youtube video where he headbutted that robber and would-be mugger had made the rounds, and hopefully people who would take advantage of the police having their hands full had seen it) but he thought that maybe he could/should be working with The Agency or the Police. They could cover more ground if they knew where the others were working.
He headed in and started wandering around. It’d worked last time. Someone eventually came over and stopped him. Said hello. Asked what the hell he was doing wandering around the halls.
Of course she would find Tony Stark in the halls of The Agency. How he continued to slip past security and never be questioned was completely beyond her, but as the new Director she was almost tempted to try and use her authority to get him kicked out. But alas, she actually liked Tony quite a bit and she knew his visits were for a reason. So, when she discovered him down the end of the hall she quickly turned her attention to make her way to him.
“Mr. Stark. I really should call security on you and get you permanently banned,” there was a teasing lilt to her voice as she crossed her arms over her chest. Her stance was offset by the smirk at the corner of her mouth as she awaited for his response.
“I figure I’m doing you a favor.” Tony said, coming to a stop once he was close enough to her that they could chat in a friendly way--rather than shouting back and forth down the hall. He slipped his hands into his pockets, and broke into a smile. “Pointing out the chinks in your armor. Hey, listen…” He added, taking a half step closer. “Things are pretty crazy out there, right? I figure maybe you could use another set of hands about.”
“Oh yes, that’s what we always appreciate, you telling us what we’re doing wrong. But an extra set of hands is always great, I appreciate that. Would you like to come down into my office and we can talk about it?” Peggy offered with a smile as she gestured towards the end of the hallway. She wasn’t sure if Tony had received the communication about the changing of the guard, but he would find out now.
“Yeah, sounds good.” Tony said, turning to follow her down to the end of the hallway. The smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. “I hear congratulations are in order as well,” he offered up. An attempt to make peace. Sort of. He was proud of her. He knew they should really talk--both in this world, and about the Dream stuff, too.
“Thank you very much. It’s a big change, but something I think I can handle,” she answered him with a smile as they made their way to her office. Sharon had been nice enough to help her set things up. Fury’s office was locked up as of right now, but she was just across the hallway from it. She opened the door and held it open for Tony before they moved to her desk, “So, any other reasons you’re here besides the upswing in crime?”
“I’m sure you can.” Tony said, walking with her down the hallway. He moved through the doorway into the office and took a lap of the office, glancing around, then flopped into the chair opposite her desk. “I figured that you and I should … you know. Talk. About things. Dream things? Anything. Everything.” He batted his eyelashes at her playfully. “Let’s be girlfriends.”
Well, that wasn’t what she was expecting at all, but it certainly earned a hearty laugh from her. She took her seat and grinned at Tony, “Okay, you’re certainly becoming one of my favorite people here. I just don’t want Pepper getting jealous that we’re best girlfriends. But let’s see...dreams, Steve died. I was depressed for a few days. Now I’m dreaming about what happens after and can I say that men are such sexists back then? Ugh. And yeah, not much else going on with me.”
Tony chuckled softly. Actually, Pepper would probably be proud of him for making connections with the Agency. There was absolutely nothing for Pepper to be jealous over. She knew--she must have known, how could she not?--that Tony belonged to her completely. Heart and soul.
“Yeah, I can only imagine. You knew my dad, didn’t you?” He asked. He’d heard as much. Through the grapevine. Stuff about Howard Stark being instrumental in the development of SHIELD or whatever. Hey, he wanted to put two and two together here.
“Yep. I still get a little spooked looking at you because you guys look so similar. It’s like seeing a ghost occasionally, but not in a bad way. I’ve enjoyed your dad in my dreams and it seems like I would do just about anything for him,” there was a certain special place in her heart for the Howard Stark of her dreams. She wasn’t sure what he had been like in this world, but the two of them were thick as thieves in their dreams. But with Steve gone now she was curious to see what would happen between the two of them and she knew that SHIELD came into play.
“I’ve heard as much.” Tony said, nodding. “I mean, that we look alike. Well, now I’ve heard that you’d do anything for him.” He paused, growing a little more serious. “I’m honored that you thought so highly of him.”
“He was a good man in my dreams, at least what I’ve seen of him so far,” she never knew if something would happen in the dreams, but she tried to think highly of people. However, she did notice the change in his expression and raised an eyebrow, “Uh oh, serious face. What’s going on?”
“I just… miss him.” Cough. “So, you know Bucky in your dreams, too, then?” Tony asked, ready to change the subject. His relationship with his father was touchy. He didn’t like dwelling on it for too long--especially not when there wasn’t a drop of bourbon in sight.
Peggy wanted to reach out to pat Tony’s hand, but she wasn’t sure how he would feel about that. She felt terrible, but instead she nodded to him, “I fully understand. And as for Bucky, I know him slightly. He and Steve were best friends in the dreams and I only met Bucky a few times before he died. Why?”
“He’s just taken a position at Stark Industries. I don’t know him all that well, apart from Thanksgiving.” The Avengers Thanksgiving. What a weird thing. But Tony was glad it’d come together, for sure. “He’s a good worker.” Tony would have said the same thing about anyone who worked at Stark Industries. He almost never actually worked with any of them. Stiles, Gwen and Pepper saw him on a regular basis, but few others.
“Oh! I remember seeing him at Thanksgiving, but I didn’t get the chance to speak to him. That’s brilliant that you’ve hired him on,” Peggy was being honest in her answer. The two of them hadn’t really spoken, but without an actual Steve Rogers in the picture there wasn’t much of a reason for her to reach out to his man from her dreams, “But I’m curious as to why you’re telling me this.”
“Just… making conversation. I was wondering if you had any inside information into this Bucky fellow. He seems like a nice guy.” Fishing for information more than anything, and turning the subject off of his pop. Tony had no ulterior motives. “How’s working with your cousin?” He added.
“Wasn’t sure if I needed to be alerted to him being a possible Avengers team member or not. I’m keeping an eye on pretty much everyone. But I don’t know a lot about him. I can try and get in contact with him if you want,” she could certainly flirt her way out of a paper bag if she needed to and if Tony wanted information she would probably be able to get it for him. Just depended on the type and the reason behind it, “And she’s great. She’s pregnant now though, so she’ll have to settle things down for going out on the field, but she’s a great asset.”
“So far, not.” Tony said. “Along with Clint. He’s convinced that he’s not… anyway.” Tony sighed softly. If the Agency decided to put together the Avengers the way SHIELD did in his dreams, Tony would be honored to be included. But without Steve to lead them he wasn’t sure there’d be much of a team to begin with. “I saw that on the network.” Tony mentioned. “Mazel tov. I never got to meet her in my Dreams.” Or Peggy, for that matter. But Tony didn’t seem too bothered.
“Yeaaaaah, I’ve talked to Clint about this stuff and I know what he’s capable of. I wish he would just start realizing he’s one of you guys so I could recruit him. Who doesn’t want a master archer on their side?” She wasn’t going to talk about how there was a hope among her and Fury that they would be able to put the Avengers together in this world, but she knew a couple of key players were still missing. Among them, Steve. “And I’ll make sure to pass along your congratulations. No babies on the way for you, right?” She was a little nervous at the idea of Tony having a child, but Pepper would be an amazing mother.
“God no. Bite your tongue.” Tony teased, then broke into a grin. “I think Pep’s gonna want me to make her an honest woman before we go do something silly like procreate.” The thought had crossed his mind. Now more than it ever had before, actually.
“Well, I’m honestly surprised you haven’t done that already. If you don’t turn honest she’ll leave you, Tony. Gotta keep her around because she may be the best thing that ever happened to you,” She pointed out with a slight teasing tone, but complete honesty in her statement. Pepper was amazing and brilliant and Peggy enjoyed how the two of them were together. If only she could find someone like that for herself, “Then I’ll give you about three years before bringing up a baby.”
“Hey, if it means I’ll get you off my back about the whole baby thing… it’s a done deal.” Tony teased. He chuckled softly. “Pepper knows she’s the best thing that ever happened to me. And she knows I know she’s the best thing that ever happened to me, too.” He lifted his hands to stretch them up and over his head. “I should be heading back to Stark Tower. But you know how to reach me if you need me. Or Iron Man.”
Peggy stood up to shake his hand and escort him to the door with a grin on her face, “It was great getting to see you Tony. We may have to get your a proper pass so you stop messing with my security. And feel free to contact me as well, I’m always up for hanging out with you outside of the Agency and superhero stuff.”
Tony nodded once. “Thank you.” A pass would be nice, even though he did enjoy putting the Agency’s security checkpoints through the ringer. He stepped through the door. “The same goes for you, Peggy. It’s always a pleasure.” Then he turned to let himself out. He knew the way.
