Farmer’s Markets were Padme’s favorite thing to do when she had some time. It was where she had met Anakin and she wasn’t going to stop just because she had children now. It was a good excuse to get out of the house with them and give them a little bit of fun for sensory growth. Besides, she could buy some fresh food for dinner and maybe find something she could mash up for the babies. She was only working half a day, so when she got home she loaded the babies up in their car seats and drove to one that was near her.
Upon arrival she put them into a double stroller and started walking towards the market. It was already starting to get busy, but she didn’t have to work too hard to navigate the stroller. Unfortunately she did bump into someone as she approached one table, “Oh my gosh, so sorry!”
Severus was out and about at the Farmer’s Market. It’d been just a handful of days since he identified his wife’s body at the morgue, and he was still processing. He’d told Daisy and David, and Daisy was depressed. Obviously. Severus wasn’t sure she even knew why she was sad. But today Daisy was with Caroline. They were playing games back at the house, and Severus and David had come for a walk to the Farmer’s Market. He needed some local ingredients, and was running low on honey. Funny the things that stuck in his mind after such a horrible, painful tragedy.
The woman with the double-stroller bumped into a man in front of the honey stand, and he stumbled back a step. His hip knocked a jar of honey off the table. Thankfully, Severus was close enough to catch the jar before it fell to the ground and smashed into a sticky, sharp mess of broken glass and honey.
“It’s okay,” the guy said. “Hey, nice catch.” But he was quick to walk away from the crazy scene. That was a lot of strollers for the front of one stand.
“Thank you.” Severus said, and set the jar of honey back in its place. “Are you all right?” He asked, turning his attention to the woman with the large stroller.
“Wow, that was a great catch, thank you so much for saving me with that,” She said to the man who managed to catch the honey. She reached up to brush her hair out of her face and gave him a smile, “And yeah, I’m fine. Just still getting used to this massive stroller. I should have worn the baby carriers instead of this. Or asked my husband to come with me. But seriously, thank you for catching that. I would have felt horrible to breaking one of that man’s products.”
“It’s not a problem.” Severus said softly. David, his nearly year old son, was fast asleep in the stroller in front of him. “That’s a very large stroller. I’m sure it will take some getting used to.” He motioned for her to lead the way. “Are you here for honey?”
“Yeah, well having twins is still taking some getting used to. It’s only been three months, but I’m still completely overwhelmed half the time,” she was starting to babble a little bit as she talked to the man. It was strange having two babies at once, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. They were amazing and she couldn’t wait to watch them grow up, “And possibly. I was just going to take a look around. Did that man have good honey?”
Snape raised an eyebrow. Having any children took some getting used to, that was for sure. He couldn’t imagine having two at once. And now that he was on his own… he cleared his throat and turned his attention to the honey for a moment to compose himself. “Yes. This is the best booth for honey, if you ask me. I’ve tried them all.”
“Perfect, I’ll have to stop by there on my way out. I think I need to get some more vegetables and fruit first. Maybe some other stuff. I never come here expecting to find anything, but I let my stomach be my guide for the most part. But hi, I’m Padme,” she held a hand out to the stranger who helped her, “Nice to meet you. Again, sorry I bumped into you.”
“Severus Snape.” Snape reached forward and shook the woman’s hand. She looked frazzled. He felt a little sorry for her. He had his own problems, but for a moment it felt like it might be easier to focus on someone else’s. “It’s fine.” He paused. “They have hot chocolate at the concessions stand at the end. With the kettle corn. Would you like a cup?” Maybe a cup of hot chocolate might help her relax a bit. Driving around that huge stroller seemed like a lot of work.
“Sure, actually that sounds delicious,” she gave him a tired smile. It was very sweet of him to suggest that and she was able to turn her stroller to head over in that direction. And kettle corn was a bit of a guilty pleasure for her since it was sweet yet not overly fattening, “Anything else you’ve seen around here that I should check out?”
Severus pushed his own stroller in that same direction. David was pretty much out for the count, and the walking did him, Snape, some good. Once they reached the stand, he purchased two hot chocolates and a bag of kettle corn, letting Padme collect her own drink from the attendant, then moved to sit down at a table nearby. He took a moment to consider her question. “If you can get your hands on some kohlrabi from the stand at the end, I would recommend it. The season is ridiculously short. I try to buy twice from him during that time if I can shake it. he might have some now, though it’s a bit early still for it.”
Padme gathered her drink and then moved to join him. Once seated she grabbed a bottle for the twins since they were still awake. She was sure that they would konk out the moment she did more walking. They enjoyed being in motion and if Anakin’s obsession with starships in her dreams were indication then it passed on genetically. “Kohlrabi. I haven’t had that in a very long time. I’ll have to make sure that I try and find this man. I wish my kids were big enough to start giving vegetables to, but for now they get milk and lots of it,” she explained to him as she first started to feed Luke and then would do Leia since they seemed to be on a similar feeding schedule.
Severus nodded. "David is--" He cut himself off, looking confused for a moment, then cleared his throat and turned his eyes to the ground. "Was still nursing. My wife, she--she recently passed." It'd been less than a week. What on Earth was he doing out already? He didn't belong out here. He should be home with his daughter. At the same time, he couldn't stay home, either. He was on leave, and he wasn't used to having nothing to do. Hence, Farmer's Market. "I hope that you find some vegetables soon."
“I am so sorry to hear that,” Padme told him honestly and frowned. What a terrible thing to go through, she had dreamt her own death, but was saved from ever having to experience Anakin’s death in the dreams. She couldn’t imagine losing him in this world, “I bet she was a wonderful woman. Are you doing okay handling everything with your son?” She was still a new mother herself, but she would try to help him out if she was able to. She felt terrible and wouldn’t wish anyone with a small child to lose a parent.
“She was.” Severus neglected to mention they were separated. That he had his suspicions of her finding someone else. That he hadn’t been the best husband in the world--obviously, or else why would she have left?... He sighed softly. “And my daughter. Daisy. She’s four--she’s at home with a sitter right now.” That sent a pang into his heart. He should have been home with her, but she just… looked so much like her mother.
“We’re taking things one step at a time.” He added, softly.
“Let me know if you ever need any help. I know it sounds weird coming from someone whom you just met, but I like helping people. I mean, I don’t have a ton of friends that have children and I know if you need a day to yourself I wouldn’t mind having a playdate for your kids at my place,” Padme felt weird putting this all out there right now after just meeting him, but her heart was breaking for him. She could tell this was hard on him especially with such young children and she would love someone who extend her the same courtesy if she was ever in that situation.
“You’re very kind.” Severus said, softly. He pulled his wallet out once more, and slipped a card from the leather sheath to hand over. “My contact information is on there, should you decide that a play date is in order. I have another week of off work, then I’ll have to figure out how to handle child care.” And everything else he was going to have to do without his wife around.
“Great. I’ll give you one of mine,” she grabbed her purse and dug around for a moment until she found hers, which she handed over to him, and slipped his into her wallet. A play date sounded great and she would love the opportunity for Luke and Leia to just have other kids around, “Thank you. Would you like to join me on a walk through the Farmer’s Market or have you already seen everything?”
“I should probably be getting home,” Severus responded. Once her card was safely stowed in his wallet, he stood from the table and reached out a hand to her to shake once more. “It was a pleasure to meet you, Padme.”
“Pleasure to meet you too. Thanks for helping me out and I’ll make sure to stop by those vendors you mentioned,” She gave him a smile and a wave before switching bottles to give Leia one. She watched him go and felt a heavy sadness for him and hoped that she would be able to help him out just a little bit.
