Who: Magnus Bane and Clary Fray What: Clary needs some relationship advice When: Backdated: December, before Christmas Where: Magnus' House Rating: Conversation/Advice on sex Status: Complete
Clary pulled her jacket more closely around her against the cold wind as she waited for Magnus to answer his door. It had been a while since they’d met up and she felt like she could do with his council. This weather was crazy! She’d never expected to see so much snow in the OC and she was quite ready for it to be done with. Although it had made for some interesting scenes to try and improve her technique.
Other than Halloween and Christmas, Magnus hadn’t really spent any time with Clary, which was a shame, because he liked the red head quite a lot. He enjoyed spending time with her and talking about the dreams or her art or whatever else was going on with her life. In the dreams, he’d basically watched her grow up, so he felt like he knew her, even if she hadn’t remembered him in the dreams until her mother had been taken. So of course, when Clary called him and asked if she could come over, he’d said yes. While Alec, Izzy and Jace had moved into the Institute, Magnus remained in his house that he’d bought upon moving to Orange County, but he spent a good amount of time at the Institute. Today, however, he was at his house and had decided to make one of the quick lunch dishes that Izzy had shown him instead of ordering out, which he did quite often.
Upon hearing the doorbell, Magnus headed into the foyer, smiling when he pulled the door open, “Hello, Miss. Fray.” He moved aside to allow her room to enter, “How are you doing today?” It was still snowing outside, as it had been for the entirety of the month of December.
"Hey," Clary grinned up at Magnus as he opened the door. "Thank you! It's freezing out there!" She darted in past Magnus and into the corridor beyond. She moaned at the warmth of the house compared to outside. "That's so much better! And it smells really good in here too! What are you making up?" She asked after sniffing a bit, taking her gloves and scarf off.
“Must remind you of New York, huh?” Magnus smirked and took Clary’s gloves and scarf from her as he opened the coat closet, which up until now hadn’t really been used much. He waited for her jacket then hung it up as well, “Honestly, I can’t wait until this is over. I moved near the beach for a reason.” Since it had been pretty snowy all month, Magnus had been unable to take part in his morning jogs. Sure, he could have portaled somewhere warmer in order to do it, but that would have taken far too much energy just to go jogging. “As for lunch, I’m trying out one of the recipes that Izzy gave me. Cheddar and broccoli soup.”
“Yeah, thought I’d gotten away from the cold weather,” Clary laughed as she took her bag off her shoulder and put it on the floor then shrugged off her jacket. “Ooo, cheddar and broccoli, sounds delicious! Thank you!” she smiled at him, waiting for him to put her coat away and lead her through to the kitchen. She picked up her bag again and followed him through the house, she’d been drawing some more and wanted to show him. “How have you been? Apart from cold? Is Alec doing ok?” she asked.
“I can’t guarantee that it’ll be great, but I figured I’d give it a try,” Magnus said once Clary’s coat was hung up. Since the last time Clary was at his house, he’d changed the decor of the living room and kitchen, which the redhead would likely notice right away as he led her into the kitchen, “I’ve been good. Alec is good too.” However, Magnus wasn’t so sure what was going through Alec’s mind at that moment with the impending arrival of his parents and Max who were coming for Christmas. “How are you? And your mother?” It was a little strange, not knowing Clary’s mother in real life as he did in the dreams, but that was just one of those things that varied from the dream world.
“I like what you’ve done with the place,” Clary remarked as they walked, admiring the new decor. “I’m sure it’ll be great Magnus,” she reassured him with a smile. “Do you cook much? Does Alec?” she asked. “My mom’s fine, getting ready for Christmas,” she shrugged. “I haven’t broken it to her yet that I want to go and see Jace in the afternoon,” she winced slightly, not expecting a pleasant conversation when it came to that.
Magnus smiled at the compliment as they reached the kitchen and he moved to the cabinet to get out two bowls for their soup, “Thank you. It’s much easier to redecorate now. The kitchen has itself has been redecorated at least three times in the last two weeks.” Magnus found that he got bored easily at times and when he did, he’d google various designs then emulate them with his abilities. “And I’m sure she’ll understand that you want to visit with Jace for awhile. Why wouldn’t she?” He ladled out soup into both bowls and brought them both over to the table, “What do you want to drink?”
“Three times in two weeks? Magnus, you need to get out more,” Clary joked as she watched him serving up. “Why wouldn’t she? Let’s see, she’s stubborn, doesn’t like change and doesn’t particularly like Jace. Take your pick,” she told him, sighing a little at the thought of having that conversation. “Don’t suppose you have any orange juice do you?” she asked.
“And why does your mother dislike Jace?” Magnus said as he got out a glass and poured Clary some orange juice then returned to the table and set it down in front of her. He knew that there were quite a few people in the dreams who disliked Jace because he often acted like he was the best and everyone should like him. “Did something happen to cause her not to like him?”
“Because he’s a boy,” Clary grinned. “A boy who wants to take me away from her and do stuff with me,” she winked at Magnus. “...and she may have come home when we were in my bedroom...making out just before Christmas,” she winced a little. “Thanks,” she said to him as he placed the glass in front of her.
Magnus’ brows rose as Clary spoke and he leaned forward slightly, one arm on the table, “Let me guess, she threw him out? Or did he do something extremely Jace-like and jump out the window?” He couldn’t help but tease her a little bit, because he could totally picture Jace doing something like that.
“Well luckily we’d managed to...put ourselves back together by the time I actually saw her, so it wasn’t disastrous just...well, y’know, disappointing,” Clarry shrugged, feeling herself blush as she dropped her gaze to the soup bowl. She picked up her spoon and took a sip. “Mmm, this is good,” she told him. “Anyway, Jace says he’s bought me something for Christmas so it can’t have been all bad,” she felt herself go even more red.
“Disappointing? Clary Fray, are you implying that you would have gone further, had your mother not come home?” Magnus quirked a brow, an amused smirk upon his lips. So far, in the dreams, he wasn’t aware if anyone else had had sex other than he and Alec, but considering what everyone had thought about Clary and Jace, he doubted that they had done anything yet. “Is Jace the first boyfriend that you’ve had?”
Clary blushed furiously as she tried to suppress the grin forming on her face. She looked down at her soup, stirring it nervously as she thought about what to say. “Well, you now,” she gave a little shrug. “He was game, I was game…” she told him. “I mean we didn’t plan it, I just got carried away thinking about him hanging out with that other girl,” she told him. “Yeah, Jace is my first boyfriend, why?” she looked up at him.
“What other girl?” Magnus didn’t really keep tabs on who Jace’s other friends aside from those from the dreams, so he didn’t know who Clary was talking about, “I’m going to give you a little advice. It’s probably not a good idea to attempt to have sex at your house, if your mother could show up at any time. Not that I’m telling you that if you are going to do it, you should do it at the Institute either.” Magnus winked at Clary. He trusted that Clary was a smart girl and wouldn’t just leave his house and go jump Jace just because he mentioned it.
“Oh, it’s nothing,” Clary tried to shrug it off. “Jace was stuck with this tiny little pocket rocket of a girl for a while, you know, another one of the OC’s weird and wonderful gifts for us. Anyway, she freaked me out for a bit and obviously I couldn’t get any time alone with Jace so we got a little...worked up,” she grinned naughtily. “I know, I know, although in my defence, she wasn’t meant to be coming back, she only forgot her card. Have you done it in the Institute?” she asked with a cheeky grin.
“Right. That. I was stuck with a girl named Lucy. It was an interesting situation.” It had been lucky for Magnus that the girl he’d gotten stuck to had been extremely nice and understanding about the whole situation. Of course he’d also had Alec come over to reassure Lucy that he wasn’t some weirdo or something. When Clary asked whether or not he’d had sex at the Institute, Magnus smirked, “I have. I’ve stayed over night a few times since they moved in.”
“Yeah, I can only imagine how impressed Alec was with that whole situation,” Clary grinned cheekily. “I like the Institute,” she said, dipping her spoon into the soup in front of her. “It’s very drawable...probably less so if you’re having sex in it though,” she pondered.
Magnus laughed and nodded, “It’s definitely difficult to draw anything while you’re having sex.” He ate some more or his soup, “So, you think you’re ready? I have no doubt that you love Jace, but you should be sure that you’re ready and like I said, I wouldn’t advise doing it when your mother might come home, because Jace might be a Shadowhunter, but no one can go up against a mother when it comes to her daughter.”
Clary laughed as a tiny part of her mind very quickly imagined Magnus drawing while Alec tried to kiss him. She just as quickly dismissed the thought before it got any further. “I guess so,” she shrugged. “I mean, every time I thought about it before Jace it’s been kind of, scary,” she tried to explain. “But now I don’t feel that. I don’t question it or worry about it, it just feels...right,” she smiled up at Magnus. “Do you know what I mean?”
“I know exactly what you mean.” Magnus watched Clary for a moment or two, “Sounds to me like you’re ready, but only you can make the final decision.” He only hoped that when and if Clary and Jace did have sex that Clary didn’t regret it. So much could happen your first time and so many teenagers expected it to be perfect, “And you should know that it’s not always like in the movies.”
“I know, but lets face it: it’s Jace,” Clary giggled, “Its not like he’s going to settle for being like some two-bit movie star. He’s got his reputation to think about,” she gave Magnus a wink.
“What I’m trying to say is, it may not be perfect the first time. Regardless of how experienced Jace may be and that’s not a dig at him, but until you know each other’s bodies and reactions, it may seem a little awkward at first.” Magnus didn’t want Clary to get her hopes up, thinking that nothing could go wrong her first time. “But if you both talk about it beforehand, it shouldn’t be too awkward.”
Clary nodded, acknowledging Magnus’ words. He did after all have more experience with this sort of thing. “Getting Jace to talk is going to be the hardest thing about the whole situation,” she said. Although her Jace was slightly different from the Jace of her Dreams, she got the feeling that he still wasn’t that comfortable with talking about the more emotional side of their relationship.
“I can see that.” Magnus knew Jace a little better than they had known each other in the dreams, considering Magnus had spent an awful lot of time around both him and Izzy when he’d go over to their apartment, and now the Institute, to see Alec, so he fully understood what Clary was saying, “I’m sure you’ll find a way to get him to talk. Could always just tell him, no hanky panky till you talk about it first.” He couldn’t help but wink at Clary as he spoke.
“Hanky panky?” Clary repeated with some humour. “What are you? Like born in the 40s?” she teased. She decided that she very much liked having lunch with Magnus.
